Title: Product reviews
Post by: Nickbat on 16 April 2009, 09:46:07
I think it would be most useful to have a section on car-related product reviews, e.g tyres, exhausts, after-market consumables, etc.

I would not see this as a big section, as the amount of non-GM Omega-related items is naturally limited.

I ask this because I will shortly be in the market for a new set of tyres and I know that somewhere in the archives was a long thread which incorporated members' experiences with different brands. With a very popular forum like this, it can be very difficult, indeed off-putting, to wade though thousands of threads to locate one particular item.

I have been trawling through reviews on other sites. It's a shame not to have an in-house section.

PS
At the moment it seems my choice is down to Dunlop, Avon or Uniroyal.

I think it would be a good idea, another example is wishbones, some real knowledge of the lifespan of the various different supplied wishbones could be useful.

ie. is a £50 wishbone any better than a £15 one? Where can wishbone bushes be purchased from at what price? These topics pop up over and over again.

That is a great idea Nick! :y :y

Up until recently I believed Vx original exhausts were some of the best outside of buying stainless steel versions.  This I would have kept on believing had it not been down to some up-to-date member (I think you were one Nick) that stated this was no longer true.  Vx exhaust quality has gone down.

So in the list that could be provided would be up-to-date information on the latest / best components to buy and from whom :y

PS Being really advanced we could even have a rating system, 1 the best choice; 5 the worst, based on members experiences pooled together.

The more I think of this I think you have hit on a winner Nick!! :-* :-* ;) ;)

yes, would have been handy when I was looking for HT leads

several allegedly fit, but in oof experience, some fit better than others.

all this sort of into in one place would be good.

Sure a lot could be in one faq,

like :

crank sensor - stick to genuine
dis pack - ebay
droplinks  - fai
all checked bulbs - genuine to avoid false MID alerts

I also agree that would be a consolidation of useful imformation in terms of where to source comment Omega bits.   A FAQ would be the ideal place.  Somehow needs to be kept succinct without becoming a rambling thread.

I was thinking more in the way of a chart or spreadsheet listing, part; brand; available from; quality rating  / members comment, and estimated cost. ;)

What do you all think? :-? :-?

could use google spreadsheets, like we used to for the car history / servicing data :

I found a huge variation when looking for radiators but I will be interested in recommendations and places to buy from a good price to pay.

Very useful for a novice like me.

I can never find those spreadsheets except when they are mnentioned.  Are there links to them somewhere on here?

It would need to be easily accessible both for contribution and reference or it will become a one time flurry of activity and then stop.

Bookmarks  ;D

But no, it is not sticky anywhere on the site, and probably why it died a death  :'(

A link in Faq or maint guides would work, I know sticky's arent popular
