I am off to North Uist the Western Isles again next week but I have decided to drive rather than fly this time. According to the AA route planner its 10 hrs and 460 miles to Uig on the Isle of Skye where I catch the ferry. The sad thing is I will be using the wifes Rover 25 diesel because it does at least twice the mpg the Omega does :'(. The other sad thing is I will be setting off at 11pm on Sundat night to catch the 9am ferry on Monday so it will be dark and I wont see much scenery.

Won't that be the wifes OLD rover by then ::)

;D ;D not if I can help it ;)

I'd rather fly than drive a Rover 25 diesel that distance.
In the Omega it would fine. Sorry, but the Rover would not be the most comfortable of drives over that distance

ooh painfull
I'd rather take an Omega - at least it will be more comfortable

Oh dont get me wrong I would love to take the Omega which would probably get about 30mpg with the cruise set on the motorway but when I get into the hills I reckon I will be lucky to get 25mpg. When you consider the Rover will do 55mpg it makes a big difference. I will just have to stop every couple of hours :'(
-
EP ...... on those roads you'll be lucky to get 25mpg. ;D
The diesel is probably a wise choice. :y
-
I'd rather walk than go in a Rover 25 for 10 hours ;D

Oh come on Pete.....don't be such a tight-wad!! ::) Sod the expense and go up in a bit of luxury and a bit of power under the right foot - you know you want to!! ;) ;D

On that sort of run my Omega would have similar running costs to the Rover :y

The whole reason for the drive is to make money not make myself bankrupt :D ;D

In that case, do it on a push bike, save a fortune and get fit, you may be away an extra week though.

It would take me a week to push bike to the end of our road which is only 100m ;)

.......but how can you resist giving the Omega a good blast through those wonderful "made for Omega" roads that carve though the Scottish countryside, especially as it's now chipped. Anyway.......aren't you already loaded?? ::) ;D

Not possible....... He has a wife :D

I'm sorry, but you guys are wimps! ;)
I have done 3,000 miles in 3 days by myself, twice. The third day was 1,200 miles. 8-)

The difference being in the US of A you can tie the steering wheel straight, put a brick on the gas peddle and climb onto the rear seat for a sleep the roads are that long and straight ;D

Owning a Rover 25, I can say its better than most cars in its class for long distances. Not in Omega class, but I've done a couple of 200 mile runs in it and been OK, unlike that crappy Focus PoS we had for a couple of years - more than an hour in that was hard work....

Thats a pity cos the drive up to Skye has some very nice scenery, mainly just before you enter glencoe, driwing through glencoe and some nice long stretches of road before you hit glencoe itself, after you cross the bridge after glencoe to Fort william around 12 miles (Glenoce to fort bill), on just windy roads and not many opportunities to overtake. The drive from Fort Bill over to Skye is very good up into the mountains and back down again. the road up to Uig should be fairly quiet also and again some spectacular scenery on the Isle of Skye used to go there every year for a weeks climbing.
The good point is the roads will be pretty quiet for you, the bad points one of which you mentioned it will be dark, and your not driving the meega :(. Hopefully it will be light on yer way back. Stop off at the Sligachan Inn on Skye and have a wee pint and tell Duncan the owner i was asking for him :y

You only need petrol one way, it's downhill all the way back lol :y

That type of journey is what the Omega is made for hang the expence "give the cat a kipper take the Omega "you know you want to" ;)" go on, go on, go on, go on" :y
