Title: ohh my     GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Post by: tunnie on 13 January 2007, 18:30:36
i was going to wait until tomorrow and post with pics, but too damn excited.

Collected my Senator 24v today, £300 quid, 12 months MOT, new cat back zorst, new heater matix, 2 new back tyres.

Drove it back, and OH MY GOD is it fast...

Waves of torque and power, 30-110 this thing is unbelievable!!

Its faster than my 2.2 by a LONG way, its more comfy, and get this.... if the fuel comp is accurate does better mpg. Averaged 31mpg from Swindon back to Brackley, and i was hoofing it all the way.

All in good nick, arches good, cruise works, original leads still in, original Headunit with 10cd changer in the boot, leather all in good nick, adjustable suspension works.... its in amazing condition.

Still tingling after driving it, so fast and soooo smooth.

Think i have been converted to Senators!  :o

Tunnie, you ever driven an Omega 3.0 Elite Auto V6?

Just personal opinion, but I'd say I'd prefer that to a Senator. Although, Senators are cool!

Welcome to the wonderful world of Senator ownership mate. :D

I guess you are starting to understand why we love them! ;)

James, a good 24v Senator is more fun than the elite... manual MV6 is still top of the pile though.

driven one of the best V6's around... Jaime's 3.0 MV6 V6 Auto....

Well what can i say? even in standard form... the Senator seams faster. If i chip it, do some little basic jobs, oil and filter, water pump ect... i belive it will crack 170  ;)

So so fast and the torque is amazing, and i aint chipped it yet!

Plus all the electrics work, bar few minors, rear leccy window, passenger washer jet.

All original vents around the scuttle original leads into the dizzy, few other minor probs though. Bit of trim missing on the back bumper (chrome) plastic sill off passenger rear, got the sill just need some replacement clips. Original gold tint alloys, with WHITE centre, this car aint been messed around with. Rear leccy ariel works too thanks to Graham  :)

Need the code for the headunit and cd changer, going to take the VIN and log book down to Vx apparently they can get the codes?

IF you're around on the 18th/19th, I might have to experience this senator in the Flesh, seeing as I will be in brackley... ;D

Tunnie, good luck with the changer. The Grundig kit was not great, even back then.

I would whip it out and fit a proper headunit. :)

You tried having a proper play in sport mode yet? :)

Tunnies right AA.....it needs a wash  ;D bit of a leaf/green mould prob going on  ;D

Couple of electrical probs tho.....heated seats dont seem to work and its hit and miss if you can get in front passenger door....central locking prob.......but im sure Tunnie can sort them out  :y

Looked a good sennie m8....bit of rust but as you said its 15 years old  :y

Title: Re: ohh my     GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Post by: tunnie on 13 January 2007, 19:10:00
its cracking for 15 years, central locking working slighly better now, but that still needs work.

Dads going away for a week tomorrow so get to stick in the garage, but starting it up again after comming back. My god is that sound good, no radio working on the way back (wants the code) didn't miss it the Straight 6 sounds amazing...

Seriously thats the best fun i have had driving since i was 17...

The fact that nothing really can touch you 30 - 100 + is a nice feeling, its just the minimal effort needed to get it to 70.

The bus ride from Reading to Swindon was awful, bus was slow, strong smell of fumes inside, had back ache after 15 mins.

Got in a 15 year old Senator... ahh thats nice  :)

Yeah but he just bought it about 2 weeks ago, he thought it was in the glove too along with the alloy centre cap key.

What keeps going though my mind, is sell the Omega!!  :o :o - And LPG the Senny which can be done for £300  :o

The Senator must have been one hell of a car in the late 80's early 90's - I can see why people who came from the Senator to the Omega dislike it.

In some areas they seam to have taken a step backwards...

I tried to sell my last 2.0l Omega to colleage's huisband.  He had a Senator and couldn't bring himself to pay £5k to lose what he had - so he paid £200 for repairs and still has it 4 years later.  Senator owners huh  ::)

My mate used to have a Carlton GSI which was really nice (and quick) but the Senny sounds cool too.  8-)

Tunnie.

Yes the Senator was a hell of a car in the early 90's. :)

Even against todays cars it will hold its own.
I bought my first one in 1996, and I have now owned 5. I don't doubt there will be 6th at some point. I just keep going back to them!

Now if only I could find a 4.0 Irmscher job!  8-)

Sent a txt message to the seller, and got the Reg number.

Went to Norwich Union, insured the car for a day from 12th @ 12:10PM to 13th @ 12:10 PM

Cost me £10.50, and you can print out a certificate to say your insured inc ase plod stop you. Never been stopped before, but you never know so better to be safe than sorry!

I got the cover from here:

That 3.0 24v is one of the best engines Vauxhall ever made i think, its about it hit 142k miles still sounds sweet as a nut.

What makes me sad is the guy i bought it from, he picked me up from the station in an L Reg 2.0 Carlton CDX.... that 2.0 sounded smoother and quieter than my 2.2  :(

The wrong air filter didn't help, seeing as it didn't fit and was far too small, but does indicate the care the car had before you got it, ie not much.  But with the TLC its currently getting, it is getting better

infact even then, im not so sure a senny will have the oomph to do it.

Tunnie.....its an over weight boat anchor of an engine which was past its best in the early 90's which ruins the handling of the car....note a Senator with a V6 in would be more interesting as it would be better balanced.....
Title: Re: ohh my     GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Post by: MaxV6 on 06 February 2007, 20:28:37
why do i get the feeling Mark's slightly biased towards the V6 then??

IMHO  the Straight 6 was better.

1) Definitely more reliable...  in both 12 and 24 valve forms

2) more low end grunt and better delivery.....   honestly that 4K surge in the V6 is almost as bad as a turbo lag

3) More economical ........  or at least, it is under the right conditions....

4) it can be turned into larger capacity fire breathing monsters with relative ease.

however,  i would probably concede that there is more technical elegance about aspects of later engine designs....  , shame it breaks so easily.

all findings based on personal direct experience of having multiple vehicles , covering very high mileage , over 20+ years

Not more reliable, I would say they are on a par here....

Power delivery is pants.....the V6 torque curve is much flatter and more progressive, if yours doesn't feel this way...it aint working right ;)!

Not more economical.....around europe we were getting a displayed 30ish mpg....the rea value was a few mpg less....again...its on a par...

It cant be tuned with ease...it takes big bucks...many think of teh hugely costly Lotus tweak (major change) adn the equaly pricey 3.6 conversion.....not cheap by ay means...

I have always been against tuning anyway....if its not fast enough, its the wrong car.....if the engine doesnt have enough grunt....put a V8 in.....

The straight six has to many bad points

1) Its WAY to heavy.....
2) Its to old fashioned with unreliable dizzy etc...
3) Its WAY to heavy
4) Its much to big.....remember the block did come from the old post war Bedford trucks!
5) Its pwoer delivey is crude.....mainly due to the simple RAM induction system.....
6) It wont meet modern emmision standards....so there was no way it was ever going to survive!
7) Its WAY to heavy.

Its day was gone....it had been stretched out as long as it could from a life expectancy point of view....it was WELL past it and most worryingly....it ruined the handling of the cars it was fitted to.....imagine how good the Lotus Carlton would have been with a V8 sat further back in the engine bay to help weight distribution.....or even the Senator, Monza or GSi Carlton....

Every engine has its day.....the straight six has gone....the V6 is on its way out....the latest daddy on the block is the LS2 or 2.8V6 turbo...
