Not on the subject of omega's i know but looking for some info as i know there are a few bikers in here
Hi everyone,
Im asking this question for a friend as he has no internet connection
He was sppeding, Around 3pm last sunday on the m4 east bound past porthcawl doing about 120mph...... There was a mobile speed camera van parked sideways on the bridge with the camera facing at him from the side of the van.
What he wants to know is will he get caught?
Thanks in advance
-
Well, he might be VERY lucky and find the guy was eating his sandwiches at the time. I'd say he's in for a stressful 14 days waiting for an NIP to land on his doorstep. (been there, done that :-[)

Dunno mate, never speed myself, dont believe in it. ::)
If the camera was pointing at him "face on"then he should be ok as there isnt a number plate on the front of the bike.If the camera did take his picture from the rear though his licence is probably gone. :y
-
120 mph! :o......`Best just go down to the local Police station and hand his licence in! ;D
-
But unless they got his plate on cam and just jotted it down n a notepad then what evidence could they possibly have?

A biker here was prosecuted purely on the colour of his unique leathers!
I think 50 or so snaps from one speed camera pissed them off too much!
-
No mate he wont get done.
There is no way the Police could investigate this and confirm his identity before the mandatory 14 days time limit runs out
It is wrong, but until the government change the law on number plates on bikes its a little loop hole that bikers are lucky to have.
On the western ring road in Nottingham there are Specs speed cameras and they cant detect bikes either.......hence bikes speeding along that road like its a motorway whilst drivers of other vehicles are stuck at 40mph.....
I think in court a motorist could plead victimisation, as motorbikers are as good as exempt from any forward facing speed camera equipment....

The days of 'jotting' down the number are long gone, the camera has all the evidence needed. :)

A sense of humour is a wonderful thing Albitz....... ;D ;D ;D ;D :y :y

There could of course have been a camera pointing out of each side of the van,so they could have got a rear shot. ;)

So what if they do have a camera facing out of the side and have his plate on video, Can they be presented in court or do they have to have a video of him speeding and the plate in one complete shot?
Thanks

Is that right????

Yes Vamps, cameras which photograph the front of the vehicle to record reg. no. and identify driver dont really work on bikes as bikes dont have a front no. plate. :) :y

The only way they can prosecute is if they have a rear shot of the bike at the excess speed, with its number plate visible.
I have never seen any of the MCVs with cameras facing both ways, so that to me rules out the operator switching sides inside the van and refocusing on the speeding bike as it passed out the other side of the bridge.
He is safe, although stupid to do that speed in the first place.

The camera will record his speed and have his reg. no. in the photo,I would imagine.
edit;webby may well be right about them not using 2 cameras in the same van,I wouldnt know tbh.
As for the speed being stupid, imo it depends on circumstances,it wouldnt be considered stupid or illegal on certain German autobahns for example, but we have covered that subject many times in the past. :y
-
Thanks for the positive news mate, My mate will be well relieved :)

No worries mate, and I agree with you, IF he was on a derestricted autobahn in Germany then alls fair in love and war but he was here in the UK, doing highly illegal speeds on a public road
:)

Illegal agreed, stupid? different people have different views I suppose,my view is that it depends on various circumstances. :y

No i dont ride bikes........!!!
Not since my Grifter in the 80s anyway
:y

sorry to but in if the cops did not stop him further up the motorway i would say he has got away with it !they normaly have a patrol car or motor bike on the slip road waing to go after the excessive speeders in his case the didn't he has proberly got away with it
-
anyone on here that rides bikes (fast) that has first hand experience form this??
Some saying that he will prob get away with it and some saying he wont :)
-
I ride bikes ....slowly ::)........If it was a camera van and if they were using the camera to photograph the front of vehicles then I dont see how he could get a ticket. :y
Tbh,I got caught a few weeks ago, going faster than your mate was going, but it wasnt a camera,it was a bloody big Volvo that came flying(almost literally)up the M11 behind me. :-[ ::)

Yes, you are right in my opinion Albitz, as knowing the M4, and many other motorways very well, doing that speed at 1500 on any afternoon would be achieved in heavy traffic, which makes it all highly dangerous. :-X :-X :-X
120 mph at 0300 is a completely different ball game, as then it is usually just you placed at risk, although on the M4 you have still got HGV's operating in large numbers, as we have on the M20 locally. ::) ::) ::)
-
Yep Lizzie I agree to an extent too, but laws are laws and 120mph isnt even close to the limit so theres no excuse really........
At the end of the day, the main person a motorcyclist is putting at risk doing that speed on a motorway is him/her self !!!
i wouldnt want to be the one picking up the body parts.
:y
-
From what i know of the mobile speed enforcement van, they only have one camera which is fixed at oncoming traffic to detect speed and collect the necessary evidence ie reg number plus possible identification of driver (not always possible).
Without the supporting evidence of reg number a prosection would not be possible for obvious reasons.
There are certain exemptions to the 14 day NIP timescale for example if you are driving a lease/hire vehicle they have up to 6 months to trace the driver..as i found out in Feb 2005 after being caught doing 85mph on a m/way in Wales Aug 2004
-
Guys Guys, I have made a mistake in my original post, It was not a van, It was a motorbike police guy with the speed camera,
Will this make any difference ? ?
-
Very much doubt it, these are simply laser speed detectors which give the speed on a display and the officer would then stop the vehicle and either issue a fixed penalty notice or report for summons.
An NIP would not usually be issued as there would be no supporting evidence as with the camera in the van which provides a photograph/video.

well its day 9 today and all is well on the front, 5 to go :(

Still not heared anything, Yipeeeeeeeeeeee day 12, 2 more to go and im home free i think :)

Er.. Ahem, you mean your mate sans Internet Connection is home free? ;)
Actually, I think they have to send it so that it would "normally" reach you within 14 days so a couple of extra days to account for the post, and a bank holiday, etc. and you're OK.
Unlikely that you your mate'd be identified front-on on a bike anyway.

A fair enough point Ms Zoom however, I had a back tyre blow at an indicated 115mph in an unmarked BMW - on official business - before anyone asks :-X and I have to say that I could have done without the fright. :o :o Even with all the training, good fortune plays a large part in the outcome. I was kucky, the m road was reasonably clear at the time.
Speed was managable once but today, there are just too many people driving with their attention directed elsewhere, rather than the task at hand. :D
Excess speed will kill every time - if you luck runs out :y :y

Yeah I thought it was for your mate too...........??
Anyway, like I said you will be fine, but learn the lesson and grow up !!!

Indeed Zulu, even 'A' class trained drivers cannot control the worst of blow outs, as you have proved, or aqua-planing. Once it goes it goes, as I once found out when I hit a patch of oil on the west bound M4 slip road at Newbury once when I spun a Carlton around a full 405 degrees, but managed to hold the car somehow to do it's spin up the centre of the road!! ::) ::) ::) ::) No cars around me (lucky!) and did not touch the kerb or any street furniture! 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-)
