im not to cause any arguments or anything like that
i turned up on the thursday at york and along with vx1 and mike-dundee and we all pitched in to help ian-d get the white tents pitched up
(twice)
as the wind took them on the friday
me and mike-dundee went into town and spent over £20 each on food for bbq
and i went out later on, on the friday night and got more fuel for the bbq
anyway
all over the weekend me and ann and i think vx1 felt pushed out over the weekend
it felt as if we may as well of stayed at home and saved money
just thought i will let you know how i am feeling as i have pm'ed loo-knee about the newent meet as i don't want the same situation there
-
also to add i spoke to ian-d about the air strip and was told not sure if it was aloud
and then found out later that people was racing up and down the air strip which me and vx1 wanted to do and even ann wanted a go
and i spoke about a group photo to be done on the saturday which ian said he will have a chat about and to find out it was done after i went
-

How did we all know? :-/ I think that a lot of that £20 must've been thrown this morning when we were clearing up. I opened a carry bag from under a barbie that had chicken, sausages, burgers etc which was a bit on the err..... smelly side! :(

Ian_D was correct .... it wasn't. Apparently the airstrip is an active airstrip and this was explained to us on the saturday night. ::) ::) Ian_D had opps all to do with the airstrip ..... it was just next door ... :-?

buying the food any the extra fuel for the bbq didnt bother me
its the main part about i may as well of not of been there
if it wasn't for me drinking on firday and doing vx1 and mrs vx1's tatto on the saturday i would of come home on the friday afternoon
-

There were only about 10 cars in the photo ..... there were loads more than that on the Sat evening.

Just my feeling as well that it seemed as if we were not there. If this was the case then we should have been told that we may not have been welcome and would not have made the 460 mile round trip I would have saved my money and stayed at home. I am not saying I didn't say 'Hello' to anyone and put faces's to names but I just felt as if I was a ghost, you knew I was there but couldn't be seen.
I hope this is not going to happen at the Newent meet as if it is I would rather not attend. When I went to Newent last year I enjoyed myself along with the wife, so going by that I thought this meet was going to be even better, I thought wrong, no disrespect to Ian_D as he organised the event.

still the point that nothing was said about people going for a bit of fun on the air strip :-/

I wasn't there but I have been to many big events and this is my take on it...
Anywhere there is a large gathering of people there tends to be groups who get together. IME it is not intentional and anyone is welcome to join in but if you don't make the effort to mingle then it doesn't happen. Just my experiences :y :y :y
That said, I'm gutted I couldn't come along but I couldn't justify coming for the day on Sunday, especially with the other 2 meets I'm already committed to this year (in addition to my other commitments!)
-
I arrived with Zok and Rob in the afternoon, where we pitched our tents by the trees, to hopefully get shelter from the wind.
Other people came and pitched their tents also up near the trees. There was no-one to tell us where to pitch are tents to be fair so everyone went where they wanted too.
Friday night was to say the least rather disjointed in my view, I have now being to several meets which were not like this at all.
I thought you Nick were with other people and were not coming over to mix with the rest... as I only saw you a couple of times the whole time I was there.
When there was a bit of work going on around the cars I didn't see you then either as there was quite a few people around at that time.
Saturday after the work was finished Elite Pete fancied ago on the air strip himself so we went for a walk around the strip where there was a caravan with some in it. We went back to the Meet where Pete got his car and went around. Rob and myself walked around to see Pete blast up and down. He had been and asked at the caravan where Pete had been given the thumbs up. A member of the forum rang me to let me know that a glider was coming in and to be careful but the gliders were using a different landing strip, so that member knowing we had a thumbs up came around, then a couple of others followed.
The pictures of the cars on the runway I assume must have been taken on Sunday when alot of us had gone home not just you.
Saturday was a great day, what with a few jobs on cars, the blast down the strip and although most difficult the quiz, where there were two tents put together and were almost full.
Don't forget the Lakes and Newent sites are actually proper camping sites, and are really told where abouts you have to go, also they have good toilet blocks etc. Anyone that has been to the Lakes or Newent meet must have felt this one was different I certainly did. But then again I love chatting and am sure I spoke to everyone or at least most.

and no-one came round to say about the quiz starting etc

I went to Newent last year as a "Newbie" and i felt welcomed by everyone having not met any oof'ers before apart from Jim i spent a good few hours there and spoke to lots of different people and watched TB & MDTM change the diff oil seal on Jimbob's Mv6 & Looknee changing somebodys cambelt
I wish i come to York now but unfortunatly its a little too far to drive for me i drive to bracknell and back most days so i dont like driving far in my spare time!
-
I am sure the quiz was mentioned before we even went to the meet.
There was both tents full of people Nick!
-
i'm just hoping that newent or even the bristol meet that i am organising is not the same
i did my best to say hello to all
but as i had my 1 and 2 year old son's to keep an eye on and to make sure they don't go banging other members cars
i had alot of help from vx1's daughter's with the kids
and would like to say thanks to vx1's daughter's for how great they was with the kids

Nick I think you will find that if you keep yourself to yourself and don't mingle with other people they aren't going to come running in to see you.
You say you were busy all day doing tattoos, maybe if you had left your tattooing equipment at home and joined in with the rest you would have felt a little less isolated.
With it being a car club meet and not a tattoo convention I expect many members may not be that interested in tattoos but show an interest in watching or helping other members to do work on their cars.
The quiz was hardly a guarded secret seeing as TB put a post up announcing it last week.

"Told where to go".....In the case of the lakes campsite; people certainly were! ;D

Your right about the quiz Daz but there was no mention when it was going to start just sometime in the evening. I only knew the quiz was happening when I went to the toilet and by then it was already in full swing, but none came over to say it was going to start. As for not mingleing with the others, everyone that went to the toilet block had to go past my van to get there and no one said hello then whilst I was outside with Nick. I had met some of the members at Newent like Captain Zok, yourself, TB, Elite Pete and a couple of others but new faces never seen before had said nothing.
On the friday night myself, Nick and Ann were welcomed in the big tent where some others were which was nice and the rest were elsewhere, so we did mix.

No Tony mate, you did it and good on ya :y

For my part, I can but apologise.
I only arrived on the Saturday morning and left Sunday morning (another commitment for the Sunday afternoon).
I hoped to have some more time to walk round but, Mick Dundees brakes were an un-expected job and I had promised my little lad a rip to the railway museum on Satrurday.
-
i don't usually comment on these threads, but i think i should.
I went to the first meet at the Lakes, i went with my old Senator i prepared for a Euro road trip, had a fantastic time, it was the first time i meet Daz, Pete, Brucie and loads of others.
It was much more of a 'central' feel there, we all camped were told too, and had big sit downs in the evenings all together, and just chatted about various things (as you do with beer involved)
I agree with Daz (Loo-Knee) in the split that seamed to occur.
I was very gratefull for the help in putting my tent up, with the extra lights too :y
Once the tent was up, a large group of familiar looking faces turned up, and the usual the sit around, beer drinking and talking about anything sparked up.
For me, there was a separate group on the other side of the site, playing very loud music until the very early hours. For me, the music was too loud, a lot of people had familys and very loud music and shouting until 2am was not called for.
This meet seamed to have a very different feel, which is a shame.
I hope with the next one, the stereo systems can be left where they belong, and have more of a complete gathering.

yes i understand about mike's brakes they needed doing straight away
as i did offer to run him to the vauxhall dealers if needed
we went into the local town on the friday morning with our familys to get food for the bbq
which took us 3 trips to and from the car to the shops
plus found the most expensive place to have breakfast only to find a cafe just round the corner that was more than half the price
then we got back and had a look at mike's car

i agree about the music and that till gone past 2am
it did wake my kids up
i think it was all coming from the main big tent not sure as i ended up in bed with my 2 boys to cuddle them back to sleep with all the noise going on

obviously some people like to have music, which does not bother me, but i think it should have been turned off around 10:30

Nick at the first Lakes there was a few month old baby taken and not a sole said a thing, most of us have had children.
If the music had caused you a problem you should of asked them to turn it down.

it would only have started to bother me if i couldn't get the boys back to sleep
i would of gone out and asked for it to be a bit quieter if i didnt get the boys back to sleep
but as me getting in bed with them got them to sleep i left it at that

As I remember on the Friday there were two tents, one with music and one without, joined together for a more socialable gathering on Saturday and Sunday evening.

i only know that ian-d put some music on in the big white tents

Lol, the Vauxhall dealers sadly didn't have the parts (they dont seem to stock much up that way!).
All was sorted in the end though and hopefuly Mick can get the correct discs sorted
-
not many stealers seem to have many mig parts on the shelf!
everytime i visit my local dealer mostly everything has to come from cheltenham! atleast its same day if i order before 9am :y
they only keep oil filters and other little bits they did have a HBV when i urgently needed one and fair play to them they helped me a great deal

This is a tricky one. I feel somewhat to blame as i crusaded this meet, almost begging you all to turn up which you did, i understand the time & expense this involves for all of you. Ian & I both feel that this meet was fragmenteted in the evenings which honestly was unintentional, no one wanted this, we all were hoping to sit around together & eat & drink but somehow groups were formed. On friday night we all sat outside till 1am & did'nt go in the music tent. I don't know who was in there or who was playing the music but it did'nt bother me. We also got booted off the airfield lastnight!!! I also spent a pretty penny on curry & chilli. I admit this meet did'nt turn out as planned, maybe we bit off more than we could chew. After the quiz some folk left & others turned thier chairs together, i saw alot of backs of heads of folk i'd have liked to have a drink & a laugh with, the same folk who made me welcome as a newbie at the first Lakesmeet & who have remained friends since & i hope will continue to do so.
To sum up, i can see this could have gone better & i apologise to anyone who feels they were left out or wasted thier time/money. We really enjoyed the first Yorkmeet which is why we wanted everyone else to attend & enjoy it. I still think this has the potential to be a cracking meet, perhaps a little more feedback to members beforehand would help. We did our best & meant well.
We'll take all your comments into consideration before the next one & see if we can iron out any problems.
Guy.

Guy.
As I said Guy I wasn't there but I have been to lots of large gatherings!
You are certainly not to blame... People are people and will naturally gather into more manageable groups. It's very difficult to talk to 30 people at the same time :y :y :y
As for organising... I'm trying to sort out the East Anglian Meet (as you know) and I'm planning to try and get us a little more organised with regards to the food as last year we all took enough food for ourselves and several others!
-
Well on behalf of Myself, robseyMV6 and M1ct, we would like to thank everyone for making us feel so very welcome on Saturday and we are now looking forward to the Newent meet, also a big thanks to richardirv for the sasuage sandwich when we arrived very much appreciated mate :y

As an ex (very active) member of the New MINI community, and having organised events for owners of the MINIs, I feel that meetings only work if everyone is interested in meeting and socialising with everyone else......
As soon as you get people keeping themselves to themselves or expecting people to come over and say hello then divisions appear.
The aim of a meet is to MEET people and the only way of doing that is by getting out of your tent and going around and saying hello.
Do it that way and very quickly you will know everybody......
:y

im used to meets from going to loads from VVOC & Vectra Sport & attending the Prestigious "Cheltenham Cruises" i know what to expect and how things go on
i understand its difficult for people who've never been involved in these things before its alot to take in!

Both Mrs TheBoy and I commented on the way home that it seemed very 'disjointed'.
I do not think this was in any way the fault of the organisers - though I remember a discussion about whether or not the music bit would be a good idea a few weeks ago. As said then, I think music can be divisive.
As for the quiz, it was common knowledge that it was starting around 8ish, had been posted up here a couple of times, including a showcase poll :o. I wouldn't go around knocking at tents/vans, as people, particularly those with younger kids, may not want to be disturbed.
I pitched my tent pretty much as far away from the 'event' tents purely because I knew with her extended work hours, Mrs TheBoy would want to go to bed earlier than many, and could do without the noise.
-
Also, the one reason I do quizes for these meets is to encourage everyone to try to join in. Its also why, on this particular occasion, I picked the teams in an attempt to break up the groups that had formed.

Absolutely right.
The way I understood it was the large tents were put together on Saturday so everyone could get together, there were no invites sent out, everyone just turned up as and when, as for using the airstrip on Saturday, I went and asked as was told it wouldn't be a problem.

And that worked, though as a first meet, as such, I did not have a group, I just tagged on wherever, without a problem, and ended on the winning team :y :y

Well I did speak to many of you that were around the cars etc (and my dog tried to) I only got there sat noon & we left after a few hours, would have rather stayed & met you in Big tent in evenings but sadly I was'nt feeling great but tried to chat best I could as drugs I'm taking do not work wonders & I didnt take too much as was driving back home later.
PS Is was nice catching up with you again Andy and Annette :y

I think the max possible score was thirty something. Scores from the 4 teams were 9, 7.5, 2 and 1 :o
Apparently, it was too hard ::)

Firstly - I haven't read many of the responses to this thread....
Nick, Sorry you felt like you were left out. That was not planned in any way shape or form.
I can't comment on other people, but I did try to speak to everyone, and I was not ignoring you or pushing you away at any point throughout the meet.
As for the quiz, I can't actually remember how I found out about it, and I was certainly not the first to be told about it either!(I don’t have a problem with that BTW, as I just cross the bridge as I get to it) I knew there was going to be a quiz as it was mentioned on the forum before hand, but I didn’t know when, where and who by etc.
Myself and a few others decided to put both tents together to try and create a more Central point which we could all stay in for a social drink, and meeting new people etc. And this is where the quiz took place. The idea of four random groups was a very good idea (whosever’s that was), and did help us all meet new members. However it’s a pity we didn’t all stay together once the quiz had finished.
As for the music, I must admit I did think it was a little loud at times, however an no point did anyone ask 'Do you mind turning that down' - If that was the case, action would have been taken by either myself, or the owner of the MP3 player / Laptop / phone which was used for the music source.
As for the talking, shouting and laughing in the tent.... Come on mate!! Its a meet in the middle of a field that happens once or twice a year! People are there to have a laugh, have a drink, and show their cars... Did you really expect us to whisper to each other??? :o
As for the 'Turning music off at 10:30' etc... Well... My Gran goes to bed later than that!
The group photos… We left it too late on the Saturday, so I suggested Sunday to a few people, next thing the sun had gone down so we had no choice!
As fast as Sunday came, Omegas vanished! ;D I know people had other commitments which I FULLY understand, however I (and a lot of other members on here) didn’t expect them to be so soon. Guy must have had a shock when he woke up and got out of his van, as half of the members has gone! ;D
The runway… Like I said to you, we shouldn’t really have been on there as it is still live in places. I didn’t know what was going on when a few members went on the runway on Saturday… And I still don’t know who, or what happened. All I know is that the time which I went on the runway in my car, was purely a case of ‘sod it, I will join them’ as others were already on their way there… and like sheep, everyone followed! And YES… we did all get bollocked by the farmer!!!
Over all, I enjoyed the meet... Yes things weren’t brilliant, and the separation wasn't ideal, but that’s beyond my control really.
All I can say is:
Thanks for everyone that turned up, and I deeply hope that you all at least enjoyed SOME of it!
The York meet will be happening again, and your ALL welcome to come along if you wish. :)

Ian, in my opinion we had a great meet, and I thank you for organising it, yes there were issues with the facilities, but we, and other talked about that, old skool camping. This was a big meet, and given that not everyone will be happy with everything, this is no way a reflection on you and your organisation, in my opinion. The site was great, not really anyone to disturb, and I will be at the next one. Did you say August...... :D :D :D

Wasn't a problem for me, as I purposely pitched away from that tent, and I wasn't going to bed that early.
But there will always be people attending with lit'luns, and whilst we can't entirely pander to them, maybe a quieten down by, for eg, 11pm etc? I'm not on about everyone going to bed then, or 'lights out' type silence, just a awareness that peeps are trying to kip down.
Though I thought it was a very well organised meet, great idea with the marquees :y, and to have the field to ourselves :y :y.

Like I said to a LOT of people, we had the option of using the pavilion on the evenings... this would be better both noise and facility wise.... Although there are no showers upstairs, the toilets are immaculate (ie, there’s plenty of bog roll, and there’s liquid soap by the sink ready to use...)
Myself and a few others did plan on going up there Sunday night as it was a bit chilly in the tent, however we didn’t want to spilt up the group so decided against the idea.
Maybe next time? Can give it a go and see what happens :question

Day off tomorrow ;)

I attended as a newbie(1st ever car meet) with missuss and 2 boys and we all thoroughly enjoyed it,so much so I paid my deposit for Newent before I left.We met quite a lot of other members and everyone was friendly and polite, and we were made to feel part of the meet :y :y
When we arrived on Friday there was 2 seperate marquies,in the evening one was playing music and the other was socialising,we went socialising and everyone was great
I must say the music was fairly loud until around 1ish(but then the music stopped and we could hear LK....SNORING,bear in mind hes about 30ft away ;D ;D)
Saturday was spent socially chatting and tinkering with the cars, later in the evening EP went to have run on the runway, with permission.LK,my missus and myself walked up to watch with our kids, then a few other cars came up for a few runs,no harm done.
Later that evening we all congrigated in the marques for the quiz and to socialise which we all enjoyed :y :y
We personally enjoyed the whole weekend, the boys haven't stopped asking when we are goingto the next meet :y :y
Well done to the organisers, and thanks to everyone who made us feel so welcome to be part of the OOF :y :y :y :y :y

Well done to the organisers, and thanks to everyone who made us feel so welcome to be part of the OOF :y :y :y :y :y
tis beginning to look like we may be going as well :y Was good to meet you and nice to have a few children to keep themselves occupied, even though it means early'ish nights..... :y

Can give it a go and see what happens :question
well thats something else i was never told about
after speaking to the owner he said it was not booked as i said to you ian on thursday and friday
Yes mate like I said, the pavilion wasn't booked for Thurs or Fri. However it was booked for Friday night till Monday (however he had to go off to Sheffield? For something so we didn’t actually get the key till Sat morning), which was the original days for the meet.
Cant remember who, but a few asked about extending the meet to include Thursday, so I agreed this with Peter - however the upstairs was NOT booked for this. Peter knows me now from both the last York meet when I saw him on multiple occasions, and also from when I've been down to see him a number of times in order to organise this meet and make it possible... Peter therefore trusted me, and gave me the key for the upstairs. He wont give the key to someone he’s never met before for obvious reasons. Like I clearly explained many times, due to me not been able to get time off work, I was unable to attend any earlier than I did.
The toilets/showers are a totally different part of the building; the pavilions function room (which is what I meant by 'facilities' as it contains a FULL kitchen, bar, tables, heaters and toilets + 230v sockets) is the entire upstairs...

Sorry how you feel Nick, but socialising is a 2 way thing,
Ann, can fully understand how you feel, Ljay has felt ignored at some previous meets too.
I only met the pair of you on my way back from the bins on Sunday, hadnt clapped eyes on you till then, had you joined the big tents previously? Judging my the kids, Im guessing they kept your hands full and maybe stopped you wandering round as much as some?
I know its not easy with kids, I had 1 to look after myself, who is a bit of a handful!
Its this that makes the pavillion a none starter for a lot of us,
just over a field, you can keep an eye on a tent with kids in, listen for problems etc, in a pavillion, you are just too isolated (maddie mcann)
In my experience, you just need to wander round the various work groups that change constantly, and say hello.
My problem is I havent a clue who half the people I meet are, mainly my fault, I tend to wear either a Mr Greedy T-shirt, or my personalised OOF one, so everyone KNOWS who I am, so introductions tend to be skipped.
-
i will see how the next meet goes
if the same i wont bother going to any more
-
I think now we need to put this down to experience and let it go as this could turn the other way. I personally thought the same as nick BUT this was my second meet, I was thinking on the same lines as the Newent meet last year thinking it would be the same as that but unfortunately got it wrong. I think all in all we may have been all to blame for not meeting and greetiing members as and when they turn up.
TB I appreciate that you wouldn't want to go round and tap on everyones tent to let them know about the quiz starting, my fault for not looking further on the post about it.
-
I was asked to attend with RobseyMV6, M1ct and AndyCDXV6 but had to decline due to family commitments.
Reading all this, I'm glad I was unable to make it. Strange though, because you are all normally a freindly bunch!
Mike

I always wear OOF t-shirts with TheBoy on them at these meets for the same reason. However, this weekend, I had a fleece on due to the chilly wind...

For those that had a less than good time, I'd suggest trying another meet, but ensuring that you do go to the evening gathering, which always tends to be a single large gathering. Not always so easy with little ones, that I can appreciate.
During the actual days, many attendees have different things to do - eg, go out sightseeing, do some spanner twiddling, go out shopping, visit nearby friends etc - so often not any 'big' thing going on during the daytime.
I'm sure VX1, who attended Newent last year, will agree that the daytime does seem to be a bit more seperated than the single evening socialising (though I guess at Newent, due to the weather and the request to keep the cars on hardstanding, all the car work was done mostly in the same area).

Yes I totally agree with you on that one TB. Though Newent was more together as in we were all close together and not spread apart. Newent was the first 'big' meet I had been too so was good to get to know everyone and this year hope the weather will be better.

I'm glad to say that we never have these kind of issues at the Scottish (Jockulars) meets... and we've been known to have up to three people attend a single event !! ;D ;D ;D
Scotland - Don't bother coming, just send us your money. ;)

Generally, at most big meets, the evening's congregation area is where bob.dents bbq end up, so unsure why people didn't think the big marquees would be the place this time :-/ - nobody said to me that the marquees would be the meeting place, I just kind of assumed :-/

Well I'd just like to say that I am really gutted that some people didn't enjoy themselves, I'd like to think that I made a real effort to say hello etc. to everyone who attended but like it has already been mentioned, when there are so many people it is very difficult to have one large gathering, there is always going to be seperate conversasions going on whatever you do.
As for the Quiz and Evening gatherings being missed by people, I'm unsure why, it was quite clear what was going on and it would of been loud enough to hear from anywhere on the site, Invitations were not needed, and I didn't think people would need to be informed that the marque was for gathering in, I thought that would be obvious. I do understand that people do like to sit outside and chill etc, but for the most part it was a bit chilly and windy for most people thats why I think the marque's are great to have available to us.
I do feel somewhat that I am to blame for the music, Ian wasn't going to bring his speakers and I asked him to bring them as we had them last year and I enjoyed having some background music. Personally I really didn't think it was ever mega loud, and it did get turned down considerably as it got later, but maybe we didn't realise how much the sound was traveling. I can only apologise for that. To be honest peoples voices were probably louder than the music and yes we might of been a tad loud in the early hours but we were there to enjoy ourselves and that we did, Guy & I are traditionally the last up (ussually daylight before bed time) and again, apologies if we were too loud.
I think we can learn allot from the weekend and make changes for York 2010, I think the marque's can be placed much further away from the tents next year for one. All other ideas will be welcome.
I'd just like to thank Ian for all his hard work, I think he did a great job. :y
-
Well me and mine all enjoyed the weekend, but if some members are posting it wasn't a good meet,we cant wait for Newent its going to be even better :y :y :y :y :y :y

It's not always easy on your first big meet as everyone is a stranger until you introduce yourself and start chatting. The other problem is now we've had a few large meets quite a few members already know each other and as a result, tend to spend more time with each other.
I've done this myself at previous meets and it has nothing to do with being cliquey or unsociable - it's just good to see people that you've become friends with again. Personally, I still try and go round and introduce myself to new people but it's not always easy. As TB said, we do tend to gather in one big group in the evenings and it's up to individuals to decide if they want to join in the fun and banter.
Anyway, all things being well I'll be at the Anglia meet in July with the trusty barbie. :y

I'm reading all the posts & taking folks comments on board. I know what it's like to turn up @ a large meet not knowing anyone as i did @ the first Lakesmeet. I was a Newbie back then but made equally welcome by longer serving members & admins & thoroughly enjoyed myself. The Yorkmeet is Ians baby but i'm the one who pushed for members old & new to attend which you all did. I was thrilled to watch the list grow, but as with any "salesman" aftercare is as important as sealing the deal so to speak so maybe i've a lesson to learn there, i just did'nt want appear self important introducing myself to folk.
We asked for this meet to be bigger than last year & it was but it's the first we've organized on this scale. I'll stay in touch with Ian meantime & we'll endeavour to address any issues. It was never our intention to make any of you feel left out or unwelcome.

Well reading through the posts all I am going to say is that Friday was fragmented more than it was on the Saturday, this being due to the two tents being split up. On Saturday most folk were in the two large tents once they had been put together, and as usual the normal gathering occurred. Personally I did wonder why neither Paul or Nick came into the large tent on the Saturday night, as it was quite obvious most folk were in there.
Anyway I enjoyed it albeit it was a bit fragmented on the Friday :y

Never been to a meet, but maybe a couple of suggestions.
Obviously fit show plates if you aquired a pair.
and as daft as it sounds, take some 4" x 2" sticky labels (plus a marker pen) and make some name tags up, up print a page full out for all mwmbers that said they were attending. This would help the young ones mix as well, as they can be very shy for the first 24 hours.
just a thought, as I am the sort that would be very shy at the first meet I went to and sadly would hope someone would come and say hello to me. But if I worw a badge sayin "No1 Saddo March 2009" then you wouls all know who you were speaking to.

For reasons outwith my control, this is the first chance I've had to reply at length to this thread.
May well offend one or two by what follows but, hey ho....
Friday night was disjointed a little, I think. I arrived late (after 9pm and dark) so gave up on the tent pitching quite quickly. Walked the hound (5 hours in a car, despite splash and dash pit stops!) then walked her to the marquees for a seat, a blether, a beer and a curry. tied the hound to a convenient lampost. Said my hello's to whomsoever that was in earshot, rather than intrude on already existing groups.
Decided it was too BBQ-ey, smoke and smell wise, and decided to sit over at the car and tent where a few folks that I consider friends were already congregating, to talk car and general 'dangle berries' away from the smoke and the music. No probs with the music, BTW, just not what I want to do after travelling a few hundred miles to meet folks.... ;)
Saturday, up at 0730, walked the hound and had a leisurly breakfast thereafter and then planned my day. It was always my inetntion to stay on site rather than explore York and its attractions. I do know that a lot of others were out and about during the day, however.....
Said hello to whoever turned up nearby as I was busy assisting a most willing RobseyMV6 do my cambelt and followers and waterpump - cheers for that, due you a dram or three next time your nearby, particularly if staying overnight.... :y Did some T2 as and when I had the chance...
Again, anyone who cared to pass by what was the obvious workshop area where a number of cars were having impromtu repairs completed would have had to opportunity to make the aquaintance of some members. Some did.
Saturday night, I followed the hoards to the marquees which had been joined together to create a larger 'indoor' area. Good call! I didn't need an invite, as I used common sense and my nose to tell me thats where folks were congregating. Had a good night and a good chilli, but, to be most truthfull, I was not the best of company. My mind was elsewhere as my wife was unwell and I ended up crying into my beer later in the evening. Sorry.... :-[
Sunday, again up bright and shiney at 0730, walked the hound and cooked breakfast. Sat and talked 'dangle berries' again for a while and then worked my way round some cars with T2 and TB. Didn't manage to get round all folks but, hey, folks didn't make a well trodden path to seek me out either.
Packed up my tent and stuff and was off site for 1300 on the sunday, thinking that was a fine time of day to have absorbed the booze from saturday night and I had a mind on the 5 hour journey ahead of me.
If I have not made your aquaintance this weekend, sorry.
If you have not made the effort to make my aquaintance this weekend, I'm sorry for you.
I enjoyed myself as did my hound.
We did have a yellow foam ball that was blown away from the cricket pitch by the wind after it had been left in the open and returned it to 'upwind' on the sunday but, to be honest, it probably would have been blown away again quite quickly. The hound is not allowed such foam balls. She devours them into their component parts within seconds!
In summation, events like these are ALWAYS going to be fragmented, no matter how hard you try to do otherwise. Main thing is to be adult about it and realise that sometimes the mountain and Mohammed must meet however you want to help. You get out what you actually put in. If you keep yourself to yourself then thats exactly what you get. Yourself....
Thanks for an enjoyable weekend OOF'ers. Enjoyed meeting and greeting friends old and new. Congrats to Guy and Ian and others for the effort. Its appreciated..... ;)
edit for spill chucker and rubbish context....

Good to see you again Mr Hotel21, I know it was an awful long way for you, and that you were concerned about leaving Mrs Hotel21 with her current illness. I am pleased, and honoured, that you made the trip :y
Thank you for your teachings on Sat, even though its another skill I will never be able to utilise. Apparently ::)
And what it is with blokes and balls? After seeing MDTM try to behead Jura, I then kick a ball that blew over, with nearly a repeat. Poor hound, must be glad for a rest from the bruises from the weekend ;D
-
Again from me, good to see you Brucie :y
Some apologies must come from me, as i cleared off for the day, my mate is not really into cars and we decided to explore York.
I am tempted if the Lakes is on, to take the bike up :)

Just an afterthought given that i crusaded this event it was probably a tad rude on my part to spend the morning asleep. Had i risen earlier i would've had more time to mingle. I regret not saying goodbye to those who left on Sunday. Lessons are being learned! ::)
