Title: She failed............who wants the work?
Post by: Dusty on 06 May 2009, 15:47:54
My miggy failed today :'( :'( :'(

On 3 items :

1. Both front discs excessively pitted (3.5.1h)

2. N/s Rear brake pipe excessively corroded (3.6.B.2c)

3. O/S rear coils spring incomplete (2.4.C.1a)

There was also 2 advisories

1. Rear brake pads wearing thin. (3.5.1f)

2. Rear exhaust has part of the system deteriorated (7.1.1a)

Could have done without this but that's life. :-/

I've been told that a partial re-test fee will be payable if someone other than the garage repairs it.

The items they tell me I require are two front discs plus pads. Rear brake pipe, and O/S rear coil spring.

If anybody fancies a trip to South Lincolnshire to meet myself and Mr Dusty and can do it for a reasonable price, then let me know.  :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :y

The work has to be done within 10 working days

Rear exhaust has part of the system deteriorated (7.1.1a)

I had that on the RH Exhaust Centre Silencer to backbox pipe i looked at it and it was abit rusty i thought the tester was being a tit!

least it didnt fail on serious issues ie Emissions/corroded mounting points

brakes are easy, around £80 for discs and pads on TC.

Coil springs get RYB, around £40 the pair

Not sure on brake pipe, depends where it is, might have to run a replacement

bit of a shite garage if they are going to charge you for a partial test just because their not doing the work >:(,its not like there is a lot there to retest, i know they are entitled to but i have yet to find a garage that implements it, good luck with it anyway :y

some places rob you by saying
if you take the car away for the work to be done there is a re-test fee

but if you leave the car with them for them to do the work its a free re-test

the place i use for mot's don't charge a re-test fee
but i know of 1 garage that charges the full test fee again

By rights they should charge for a full retest if the work involves touching anything else testable. In this instance the wheels have to be removed so a full test is (supposedly) required.

Admittedly most places don't do this but it's there in writing ::) ::)

mot test can not remove any parts !!!!! most place charge retest nowadays with it all being on computer they have to allocate time now and we all know time is chargable  :y

I know... Point being???

If the wheels are removed they could be re-fitted incorrectly which is a fail. Hence, anything which involves removal of wheels should have a full re-test

And you're right... Most places are now charging as a re-test takes up computer time which could have been used for a full test. Luckily the place I use doesn't :y :y :y :y

Thanks Markey, but due to time/work pressures I would be unable to get to you or any other forum member for that matter.
I have been disappointed with this thread .You are the only forum member who has offered to help make my miggy MOT worthy. :-/ :-/
Due to the lack of any real help ,I have today booked my miggy in at the MOT garage for next Friday.(at considerable cost that I can not really afford.) :-/ :-/ :-/ :-/ :-/
I would have been happy to pay a competent forum member to have worked on my miggy at my house.it would have been nice to meet some other OOFers ,but it is not to be.(I would have even supplied free beer and lunch).

After more than 1200 posts  I fear that OOF is not for me anymore. :'( :'(

I wish all the best to everyone.

Don't say that, yes it is a real shame that knowone has been able to help you out, I can only say that even though there are thousands of members on here, there are probably only a small percentage of members that are mechanically able to assist you and unfortunatly those members may be quite some distance from where you are and have busy lives. I don't think it reflects badly on the forum as the forum is so much more than that. I love coming on OOF and going to meets etc. But I can't fix cars, I'm not a mechanic, Now I can fix a PC if you asked me to but not an engine! LOL

Just hope you don't decide to leave the forum over this.  :'(

Dusty, I would love to come over and do the work for you but I feel it would be unfair of me to promise that when I know I don't have time to do it within the 10 working days. For me to come to you it would be anywhere from 2-4 hours travelling each way, depending where you are (as Mark said, you haven't actually told us where you are ::)) and I, unfortunately, am committed elsewhere for my next 4 days off.

Please don't just lose faith in OOF and leave as it would be a real shame.

Have you tried the boys in pink? PM Loo-Knee or Elite Pete, I'm sure they are now able to go mobile and may be able to help you at a considerable saving based on garage prices!

Yep 24 hrs is not much time for making arrangements, give em a chance.
I currently have a forum member booked to do some work on my Miggy but the parts will take a while to be ordered and be delivered (10 days in fact) so it's not a quick fix.
Maybe it's best to get it done locally.
I always MOT at a none repairing garage, they never charge for a retest within ten working days.

Anyway this post will keep it up top for you.

When I have been waiting for a quick reply on something I keep adding bits to get back to the top  :D :D :D :D Maybe this should be in Wanted????? I never thought this  site was about someone else fixing my car, I thought it was so they could teach me how to do it myself  :) your Mot list sounds a bit more complicated than mine otherwise I would have come and helped you :D :D :D :D :D :D but I would probably make it worse ::) ::) ::)

It has been covered a few times now, but a town name would be really helpful here - I am from Boston and am often up that way - if you have no better offers I would happily change discs, pads and spring.

It is difficult to comment on the rear brake line as there are a few places where it could need replacing - perhaps taking a picture of the offending area (if it was pointed out to you) would help?

Platty if you get your petrol from Tesco in Boston and if your car is a brown estate with much of the trim missing down the one side then I think I have seen you there, but did not approach you, woman on her own etc. etc.

I was in a silver Omega parked next to you.

With regards to the work for the MOT it nobody's fault and I am not blaming any forum members for not doing it, all though I was a little disappointed in the response.

I am however acutely aware that this is a male forum, and perhaps like many women it is hard to fit in here for a long period of time. :-* :-* :-* :-*

Dusty, I am sad that your car failed its MOT and that you feel the response to your request has been lacklustre.....

However I do see people on here offering you help but your attitude isnt very welcoming and you wont/cant even make the time to get your own car sorted out.......it takes 2 to get it done you know !!!!

I noticed Mark DTM has twice asked you whereabouts you are, yet twice you havent given him an answer which is sad because he is probably your best bet at getting your car sorted !!!

Not having a go at you at all, but why not help us to help you ??

My final comments:

Lets not over intellectualise this chaps. I have enjoyed my time here at OOF but I do not feel it is for me any longer.

I done not blame any particular OOF members for my leaving.

Luckily I/we are not a houseband OOFers who need to get out more. We have family friends and social life which we enjoy so no worries there.

I will try and keep in touch which Lizzie through email, because she has to read the rest of my book (poor Lizzie)

So all of you have a great summer with lots of health wealth and happiness and lots of Dusty kisses all round :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*

Grey estate, some trim missing - fill up there once a month maybe.

Made my offer but appears your mind is made up. Shame.

Personally I am rather offended at this... I have a wife and two daughters and I treat my wife no differently than I would treat a man. It comes across to me asthough your making the forum members out to be Sexist, just because you have not had the response you were hoping for.
If you had PM'd myself or Pete we would have no doubt been able to help you.
If you want to leave the forum then leave it is totally up to you, no one is making you leave and I am getting fed up with people saying they are going to leave hoping for the sympathy vote. :y

what's the sticker got to do with anything?

From my point of view, as this work involves brakes and especially if done for money, there is a liability issue if anything went wrong later.  Hence anyone doing this should have the appropriate insurance.

Sounds asthough Mark has sent a Forum sticker so by the sounds of it means Mark knows where Dusty lives.

I thought you were in Shropshire not Lincolshire!

Has anyone considered that maybe if the right location was specified in the first place on the forum it may have actually saved 24 hours of people looking and thinking it was too far away when actually it may have been on someones doorstep?

Just a thought

My final comments:

Lets not over intellectualise this chaps. I have enjoyed my time here at OOF but I do not feel it is for me any longer.

Still not an ex-member then!  :-?

For future reference of course but how do you resign from the forum? Do you have to hand-back your password or is it more drastic than that - maybe have to sell the car and get a BMW?

Which he has, quite rightly, kept to himself!

The actual point was that instead of Dusty replying with a town name when Mark asked her where she was, she retorted with "at the same address you sent the sticker to" or words to that effect.

I merely pointed out that actually I dont think its Mark that sends OOF stickers out thats all.

Anyway another storm in a teacup.

I have the appropriate insurance - and still wouldn't do it  ;D

Edit to add - that's not taking the Mick - I just don't do brake work on other cars :y

.....
....,but due to time/work pressures I would be unable to get to you or any other forum member for that matter.
I have been disappointed with this thread . ......
After more than 1200 posts  I fear that OOF is not for me anymore. :'( :'(
 .......

 :-? :-? :-? :-?
You only posted of your MOT fail yesterday afternoon, most people have time/work pressures too. You haven't been short on suggestions of where bits can be bought/obtained.

I certainly do not expect any special treatment .But the thread had already dropped well down the second page ,and I only have 10 days with which to MOT my miggy. So time is short. :-*

You have 10 working days, but you have 14 physical days (2 weeks)  which today was only 1 from 14 leaving 13.

but as allready mentioned, you dont exactly help yourself when your Avatar says one location and then then loosely mention annother.

I feel you put members on the spot by asking for help without proper details, and then turn it round on then as if it's thier fault you didnt get the help you were expecting.  Plus expecting them to travel to you  rather than you traveling to them as it is your car that requires the work.

Then say you are leaving because the thread ended up on the second page.

Dusty, I did hold you in high regard as I do all the ladies on the forum (including Lizzie ::))  Sadly you have slipped down the ladder in my estimation.  Ah well.  Such is life.

Can't say I have been following this post with interest :(

Believe main purpose of this forum is to help less knowlegable members to help themselves overcome issues on their cars, and it is certainly successsful in achieving this.  It is not a means of getting your car repaired foc or on the cheap at the drop of a hat, although there are people on here who will help for free or will offer economical repairs.  Most members have other commitments, for example work or other interests, and it is not on to expect immediate assistance and if it is not forthcoming to throw toys out of pram.

If Dusty wants to leave then my view is that the loss is hers not ours and quite frankly I don't give a t*ss!!

I can only surmise from her responses that her whereabouts have to be kept secret for whatever reason (it actually would have been helpful if she had given her location) and that she should get a pram with higher sides :-?

Strange attitude - no helping some folk :-/

No, it would have been me who sent the sticker out, not Marks DTM Calib, so he wouldn't know where it was sent.

Lincolnshire is too far from me - even the near bits - so never really paid too much attention to this thread...

Shropshire was to far away for me, so I didn't read anymore of the thread... However I've now found out that she lives in Lincolnshire...  :o

Oh well... To late now as it looks like shes thrown her dummy out because there's nobody in Shropshire that can help? ::)

Can't quite get my head around the fact that someone can come on here and virtually demand help and expects someone to drive to her home to do it!! :o Sorry Dusty but that's not how it works on here.

I'm quite inept at fixing my own car and if I don't get my local garage to do the work, I politely ask members like Elite Pete or Loo-Knee if they can do it at their going rate and drive to them, not the other way round. When they replaced my wishbones I made a 360 mile round trip.

Dusty - time to get things in perpective methinks. ::)
