Title: NVQ.
Post by: amigov6 on 07 May 2009, 22:05:23
Yes if you're HGV positive you now have to hold one for your licence not to expire next Sept. After 2 saturday mornings "school" & paperwork i had an accessor riding shotgun with me today, (Burnley & empty back) & about 2 hrs of paperwork & Q&A. This & my ADR counts towards my CPC should i choose to persue it.
Just a word of warning to those holding an HGV but not using it at the mo. it will expire in sept 2010 if you don't gain the NVQ.
     I'm awaiting my certificate. ::)

Thinking more on this, how can they say you have to have an nvq to drive a truck, it's a driving licence that is required.  Educational qualifications I have in other area's........ :)

They are trying the same thing in the taxi trade......
Iirc one council revoked over 60 licenses for drivers not having the qualification......then soon gave them back when it discovered it didnt have enough cab drivers fri/sat nights.  ::)
Another council was taken to court for revoking licenses and was ordered to give them back on the grounds of preventing the cabbies from earning a living.

I personally refuse to do the nvq.....from what i can see, utter waste of time......ok maybe a 'pointer' for new drivers, but if you've being doing the job for a while, it doesnt teach you anything you dont already know.

WTF!!!! I've been off the road 5 years now but I still want to keep my license and I still use it 3 or 4 times a year to earn holiday money. I'll be breaked if I'm going to do an exam to keep my driving license!!!  >:( >:( >:(

As some of you have stated it's invent a job or what i call a "non job". I'm fully aware of load security, axle weights, hazard perception blah de blah but it's compulsory to hold an NVQ or your HGV will be void sept 2010 & you'll have to start again which going by current standards will involve a Uni course by then. The difference between this & a Hackney Carriage Licence (i've held one) is your local council issue these. With HGV VOSA (or the ministry of transport) are involved. You don't have the option not to do it, you'll be back to a car licence.
Bertie. As regards the 7.5 t i don't know. It depends when you passed your car test. Did you take a seperate 7.5 test or do you have a 7.5 t entitlement on your licence?

This is all new to me, i would have thought that all HGV licence holders would have been notified as to the plans but i for one have not herd a thing untill now, it seems very strange to me, i already hold my CPC so dont need a micky mouse piece of paper which is worthless,  :-/ :-/ :-/ :-/

If you hold a CPC i guess you're not affected as i'm told the NVQ counts towards it. Still new to me. Just going on what the anorak no real job to do assessor told me. :-/

Agreed, been talking to a couple of HGV drivers today, older guys and they were not aware of the impending loss of licence.... :) Brother and sister in law both hold HGV, sister in law recently, for their Horse Box. There is no organisation that oversees such use of HGV, other than DVLA :)

They are going through all the haulage firms first, driver by driver. As regards the folk who hold & use an HGV for private use i'll ask next week or you might want to try googling it to get the right answers & peace of mind.
I'd advise anyone not to ignore it, you may have to resit your test. :-/

Correct me if I'm wrong truckers, but I seem to remember my dad driving his lorry on an ordinary driving license. When the HGV came in, someone sat in the cab with him for a while and then said "How long you been doin this mate?"

My dad said "Thirty years"

"You've passed"

I'm a hgv1 driver, already got my nvq level 3, not hard really, but obviously, if you haven't got it, and don't know about it, it can be a bit of a shock.
Found this link, might put some light on it...

That does not seem to suggest it is compulsory though, certainly not going to take a test again, if I loose it I loose it. Will have a chat with the 'company' transport manager, they might put me through, better get some practice driving in first though ::)

Still got a PSV and more useful for PT work anyway.

I know it is going to be compulsary, but not really sure when but tbh it's just another backdoor tax from the goverment really.
Same as your digital tacho and license having a lifespan, having to be renewed after soo many years.  :( :(

It's only a day with an accessor & a few common sense answers. Costs nothing. He did'nt mind me smoking & drinking coffee on the way so if you need to do it you may as well to keep your licences. ::)

So this may be more 'work related' rather than licence related, need to look further into this. I don't, and never really have driven trucks for a living, (a few months in 1985 on tippers)  just extra weekend work, same with Coachs. :)

horsebox should be safe to drive without nvq or cpc as long as it is not being driven for "hire or reward"
