Title: Roof Box needed
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 10 May 2009, 19:17:53
We Intend to do a LOT of summer camping

We have a Miggy Estate. The boot space is entirely occupied by the dogs, and the car entirely occupied by bodies.

In addition, I need a means of transporting, a large tent, folding chairs and tables, camping cooker etc....

I need a LARGE roof box, any recommendations? Also, any other load carrying devices, would be worth knowing about :y

That tent will be too heavy for roof box :o

James -- haven't got one -- but how about getting your hands on a small trailer -- you can then leave it packed between trips -- saves an awful lot of messing around.

roof boxes cannot take much weight, only thing they are good for is big stuff which does not weigh much.

Sadly that tent will weigh a ton!

Pretty certain the car spec is a max of 50kg (which includes the roofbox weight)

I'm not thinking of putting the tent in it - moreso, folding chairs, little campstove, sleeping bags, bedding - basically, the light, yet bulky, stuff :y

This is my modest tent, i like it cause of the 2 separate 'pods' which are the bedrooms (they sleep 2) but when i go camping with my mates, we have a pod each, and take a popup for the other person.

Its also good cause i can fully standup in the centre, and i am 6ft4

This modest one weights 10.2kg packed, so a box must weigh around 5-10kg min...

does not leave much

The dog will have to cuddle the tent ;D

I've also considered building a platform half way up the boot.

That way, doggies can sit on that - with lots of gear underneith them :y

you only have a problem if the total weight is over 3.5(?) tonnes, you're OK with a small camping trailer.

In that case, scrap the roof box idea - that's a much better option  :y

You just need some where to keep it when not in use.  :y

Bit of advice mate....my brother gave me his a while back. It took all the room in the shed so my son suggested i put it on the roof of the shed. A windy day and it blew off and top if it is buggared. Luckily halfords had a sale over easter and got a bigger one for £150 exdisplay....worth asking about them if you can get them that cheap

Oh also if you are small its best not to park the car with the opening side down a hill-really embarased myself having to move the car to access it lol
