I have particular requirements which rules out ABC or XYZ. Think I have narrowed it down to
Ericsson Xperia X1
HTC Touch Pro
My current phone, a 3 or 4 year old HTC Hermes has been brilliant (apart from Vodafone having no service around my way, despite their claims otherwise), but is starting to get a bit tired.
As well as the phone, cheapest place to get, with or without contract (if on contract, prefer 900Mhz, so I can chuck the SIM in the car)
-
How about an iPhone, or do you specifically want a keyboard that has real buttons?
-
Don't really know about where to get them cheapest but my mate has got a HTC touch pro and it is excellent. :y

a) they are utter shite
b) doesn't do what I need it to do
c) ill thought out piece of crap
d) I won't mention d, as being a new member, you may not be entirely familiar with my views on Apple shite ;)
gayPhone v1 and v2, as well as having piss poor radio reception (a big problem for me, as Voda doesn't work too well here), lacks absolute fundamental basic mobile features:
No MMS
No ability to forward text messages
Apparently both fixed at Apple's 3rd attempt.

I am edging towards the Touch Pro, mainly due to better keyboard.
Both are actually made by HTC, which is why they are top of list - HTC seem to be the people who make the best Windows phones...

OH no, nightmare scenario - what about a car with blue LED dash, a gayPod wired into stereo, and a gayPhone stuck on a vent :o
-
my vote goes to HTC.. but it costs an old car money here :(
so I'll go for nokia E71..less than half price of HTC..

I've got a Nokia E71... Generally very impressed but there were a few things that Nokia didn't think about. It doesn't have a decent connection manager as standard and the free download for Smartconnect is OK but doesn't do seamless roaming >:( And for some reason it won't connect via WiFi unless there is a mobile signal present too.
There are work arounds for these but it's just a little frustrating! The 3.5G connection is handy for surfing on the move though! :y :y :y
-
My friend has just got a HTC Touch Pro and loves it even with the odd lockup (new software fix due out any day to fix it)
I have the Nokia 5800 and am finding it really good and easy to use.
depends on what you want to do with the phone at the end of the day

Cem,
Be sure to flash the software before adding any content as there were lots of issues with the first release.
Like I said, there are still issues, and it's been randomly resetting itself over the last week or so (but only when I've got several applications running at once so I think I've been overloading it ::) ::) ::)) but generally I am very impressed.
Oh, and a good third of my posts are made via it :y :y :y

I assume you are looking for a PDA with hardware keyboard!! Touch Pro etc.
If not I can recommend the HTC Touch HD.
If you need the keyboard i'd maybe wait for the Touch Pro 2, will be a massive improvement on the Touch Pro, you'd hope.
I wouldn't go for the X1, I have never used one, just heard its not as good as the HTC Pro etc.
All WM so easily customised though.

Keyboard is pretty essential, as being over the age of 12, it takes far too long to send a text, an email, or post hear with a mobile keypad.
I've used X1, and it appears to be OK, but, although the thing is made by HTC, the fact it says Sony Ericsson on the badge puts me off.
It HAS to be Windows Mobile to meet my connectivity requirements.
-
i have had bothand i sent the htc back and had it replaced by the xperia. i find it faster, bettery lasts longer and the keyboard nicer. if its connecting to a citrix server you need it for there are apps from nokia business for free that let you do this on most new e or n range nokias, which may broaden your choice. my tuppence is from experience go for the sony, even tho its sont and the pannels are a gimmick, as a base windows mobile phone its better (a+d ca+ //vnd can even be flashed with the htc touch flo shell) tho i found it slow and buggy ("hich i know there are tweaks for by now)
-
i found the X1 keyboard too small, Touch Pro is the one to go for, although it does not 'feel' as nice in the had as the SPV3100
TouchFlow 3D is quite nice makes sliding through contacts, messages easier.
can't remember if it had the scroller on the left, which i use all the time.
iPhone is limited to O2, and is a rip off in terms of price.
Touch Diamonds are nice, lot cheaper than the Touch Pro, but lacks the keyboard.
Diamond is a LOT thinner too.
I would get one to run Android, but not sure on the exchange capabilities :-/

I'd try and have a play with a Touch HD, I find the shear size of the screen makes sms, email really fast and easy. especially if you flash to a cooked rom like Duttys V3 from XDA Developers.
If your fixed on having a keyboard i'd definatly wait for Touch Pro 2. Looks like a much nicer device than the Pro. :y
Shame you didn't mention it at York. You could of had a play with my HD.

Ive got an Xperia and its excellent ive always prefered ericsson had a P910 a while ago and this is soo much better! plus its windows mobile not UiQ Symbian so more apps and easy to program for
Functionality i did have to do a firmware upgrade when i first got it as it kept crashing on the video player but f/w upgrade fixed it i also unbranded my'n as i dont like all the orange rubbish!
iPhone may be kool but the xperia blows it away the full keyboard is nice and easy to use i have big fingers and have no trouble using it
Battery life is also good on the Ericsson dad has the HD Touch and his battery doesnt last long if you keep using the phone

I find the battery very good for the size and resolution of the screen its powering. But does depend how much use it gets but that goes without saying. I must admit I do carry a spare battery in my wallet at all times but I rarely need to use it.

Fortunately, Sony Ericsson didn't make it, its rebadged HTC, but did have a load of input into its design, which is why I'm probably going for the Touch Pro

Depends what you compare it to - a smartphone is never going to last as long battery wise as, say, nokia 6310...

Yeah I had a Diamond before my HD, The Original 900mAh battery is not very good especially for business, You can buy a 1340mAh Battery which comes with a new back cover and makes the device a few mm thicker, then the battery is acceptable. Still not as good as my HD which despite only having a 1340mAh battery is much more efficient and lasts much longer. :y

you want an n95 J you know you do. Youll just have to learn some new tech and get used to texting...:-)
Or stand there with a gay little stylus tapping away.... (Snigger) ;)
But seriously what are your connectivity issues/requirements out of interest?

Oh no!! N95, Everyone I know who has had an N Series Nokia has had trouble with it, Crashing and general crapness! Sorry!
You don't need a stylus to text either, got a stylus on my HD and I never use it. ;)
Just to add, For TB, The Pro 2 is due Early June 2009 - http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/16/htc-touch-pro2-is-awesome-in-ways-the-touch-pro-never-could-be/

Touch Pro on its way....
It was only ever going to be the Touch Pro or the SOny Ericsson, and the Sony name turned me away from that model...
-
Fair Enough, Suprised you didn't fancy the Pro 2 though being that its only a few weeks away. Still the better choice over the X1 I think. :y

Reminds me of my favourite poem. To be recited when leaving any pub.
The time has come, the angel said,
To pull your forskin over your head. :-)
Bloody keyboard indeed.
Crashing thing was true enough up til about a year ago... In my experience, anyway....
