Whatever you buy mate, make sure you buy a TOSHIBA.
They are the best and last for a long long time.

Toshiba Satelite series are very good. That's what i use, i can't fault it :)

Ah yes, I forgot to add this. Check the following link:

Hope you find your joy in that :y :y :y

So rightly said Pete. NO faults at all with a Toshiba Satellite. I got one since 1999 (mind you, it's a Celeron 600 MHz with 196 MB Ram and a 4 GD HDD) - it still works fine with Windows XP! And believe me, it's been through a lot. It's got cracks under it and I used extra strong glue to get it together, but it still NEVER misses a beat. ;) :y The other one i got is a rather Dell. Crap devices they are! Been having so many probs with it. Fortunately, I did not buy it. It's my office laptop! I've now ordered a new Toshiba Satellite. It's coming by the end of the month!! :y :y :)

Tosh have gone off the boil a bit recently, hence I haven't bought any recently.
Dell went through a bad phase, I think related to lead free manufacturing, which I think (like everyone else doing lead free (ie everyone!)) they are now over.
My current preference is HP Business laptops (consumer once are poor value for money), and that is what I use here. I use a 6720s, which cost £400 about 18 months ago, Mrs TheBoy uses a 6820s which was £228 9 months ago (though is only a celeron, but for basic tasks, a celeron is not dissimilar in performance to equivilent C2D chip). Do have to remove all the bloat though.
Any of the big 3 laptop suppliers (Tosh, Dell, HP/Compaq) should do you well.
The ones I'd personally avoid are the likes of Acer, Packard Bell, and most of the 'no name' type ones (some are pretty good, but you need to be able to tell that)

What no mention of Sony. We all know how much you rate these ;) :D

Repaired too many to give them any bill of health. Bit like Apple, all style, no rather substance.
Oh, and gay.

I'm thinking about laptops at the moment... Actually, TBH I'm thinking about a netbook.
I don't really game, just use it for office programs, email, surfing and I need to be able to run the LPG software, which is windows based.
Was looking at the Dell Mini 9, 2GB Ram but only 6GB Solid State Drive, with SD expandable slot.
My question is, is 6GB too small for a drive? I was thinking I can easily expand it with a USB storage drive as I saw in PC World the other week 500GB was £90.
Oh, and Ideally I'd like to be able to watch films on it when I'm at work as sometimes it's so quiet I can do nothing for hours on end! Hence the netbook decision as I don't fancy lugging full size laptops up a crane ::) ::) ::)
[edit]Oops... Sorry for the hijack :-[ :-[ :-[[/edit]

To LFF64, I would consider waiting until Win 7 is out, as I reckon it runs so much better than Vista. Microsoft is tight lipped about when this will be, but as a launch partner, we're prepping for this Autumn :-X
To LD, don't underestimate the crapness of netbooks. I think the concept (of mega low perfromance) is flawed, even for web surfing.

That was why I was looking for one with a decent size RAM... Hmm, not sure now as there are some pretty good, lightweight laptops about now. I know my Old Man has got a Dell one which he rates highly (and he uses it heavily for business) and it wasn't much more than some of the netbooks I've been looking at :-/ :-/

It does depend on usage, just bear in mind how relatively sluggish they are if performing anything intensive...

Thanks for the replies the one I was looking at is a Toshiba L300 11V Seems to be around £310 . What about refurbished ones are they best avoided :question :y

Most intensive thing it's likely to do is OOF TBH ::) ::) And it can't be any slower than surfing on my E71

Now, with refurb, you have to ask why. Are they returns that have intermittent faults that can't be found? Business ones on a next day exchange that have been sent back due to faults? How good is the professional refurber? Has previous owner 'copied' the licence leading to probs later?
Thats assuming profesional refurb. Back street shops and kids bedrooms, might end up with a right heap, and frequently illegal copies of Windows.
Might be worth avoiding refurbs to be honest.

OOF not that CPU intensive, though a fair number of elements on the page, so page render may cause high cpu

Sadly it has no serial port....but it has a new genuine battery which is only 2 weeks old ::)

I suspect the old SMell I use for tech2 will last better on its batteries (as long as recently charged) - good for ages.
Sadly, batteries getting old, and don't seem to hold charge for more than a few days :(. And the mobo is knackered, memory errors, just like my other SMell :(

tech2 is fine on USB2Serial adapter

Unfortunately it looks like the charging circuit has packed up on my current laptop... The battery is less than a year old and it runs fine on power but will not charge. But TBH it was a freebie from my mum and can only have 1G max RAM so is a little slow... It's not even got built in WiFi ::) ::)
But it does have a serial port :y :y

I have a new toy ::) went out and brought a Compaq CQ60311SA
