Title: The Scrappage scheme
Post by: Threewheeler on 13 May 2009, 08:27:58
I have a 99 CDX in excellent condition, everything works inc telephone radio and 6 cd player, brand new spare, never been on the road, it seems a shame that it is destined for the breakers yard, suppose I could offer bits before it goes, any suggestions? I am in central sussex.

If it is in excellent condition and everything works, why is it destined for the breakers?

From the bits of the scrappage system I've heard, it's all a bit of a con. the dealer's supposed to go 50:50 withthe government re the £2000 and I believe they're not all that willing, especially on the smaller cheaper cars, where there's less profit anyway. IMO you'd be better selling your Omega, either as a whole or break it, if you have the room or inclination, and going to the dealer without a part ex & go from there. I bet you'd easily get a discount of £2000 against a new at the moment.

I know that Andy.

What I'm curious to is why the OP thinks he's gonna do better letting the government scrap it as opposed to flogging it privately.

Ah!  :y The government seems to have convinced at least one person then!  :y ;)

Cannot understand your reasoning,I was offered 800 for the car as part exchange, really love it but it only does 30 to the gallon.

...... The dealer that offered you £800 for it doesn't really want it, he would have to get rid it it himself. Sell your car privately mnd then ygo back to buy a new/another car wothout a part ex. you're then in a far better bargaining position. The goverment's scrappage scheme, as far as I can see, is a con.

'only' 30  :-? ...... I think most Omega owners would be more than happy with that. Mine's normally around the low 20's

Three Wheeler.....you didn't get £2000 at all mate.

All this scrappage malarky is just the same as the dealer who promises to give you £1000 for your car no matter what the condition when you buy a new one from them on finance.

The figures will be manipulated to make you think you've done ok, when in fact you've just given the car away.

How much are you spending? I'd have thought that'd be able to negociate(sp?) at least that kind discount without a part ex at the moment. New cars are just not selling.

I have gone for a scrappage deal with Fiat for SWMBO's new Panda. The figures with and without the scrap car were £100 different! But I had a smaller deposit to pay with the scrap deal. I think it will work, but only for cheap/small cars.

If you're seriously thinking of scrapping this, could I have first refusal on a purchase?

If everything works as you say and it does 30 to the gallon then I and many others would be happy to rip your arm off for this!

colour/ mileage / engine?

Seems such a shame, I Know, I will take the radio, cd player and spare at least, maybe I'll get a decent offer for them on Ebay, any thing else that would sell? door mirrors, perhaps.

Yes, deal done but dealer only wants a complete car so damaged trim etc doesn't matter, will take all I can off. requirement is that car can drive into dealers yard and then on to transporter for taking to scrapyard, somewhere in the midlands (The dealer thinks), so why not do a fellow omega owner the favour, for a small consideration, of updating or replacing damaged trims, or even doors/boot lid etc.
Iam out all day today so will respond this evening if anyone is interested.

TBH, I'd swap it for a ropey old banger and trade that in instead. If it's getting scrapped who cares what you actually turn up in?

Just realised this is the main thread of two of the same title!!

So again...........

This is what is going to happen when this scrappage scheme is applied!  A good car, fully roadworthy, that has taken a lot of resource and energy to build, is now just going to be chucked away for what?  :-? :-?

Barmy, bloody, political nonsense to appease the international dictate that is not based on 'saving the planet' at all, but really just to keep the car industry afloat is the real answer!

This gives politics a worse name that it already has!! >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

i put one of those induction kits on the car and it makes raaaaargh noises so i tend to boot it a lot more.
30mpg  would be great
