Title: Insomnia...
Post by: Welung666 on 24 May 2009, 00:42:27
No matter what I do I can't get to sleep.... again! The last 2 weeks I've felt like I'm being punched in the kidneys every 10 minutes. I have absolutely no apetite and the only thing I can do to sleep is get watered! I'm on tomazapan from the quack and they just make me hyper so I've stopped taking them. During the week I have to be up at 5:00am for work and I'm awake at 3:30am give or take 10 minutes. I can stay up drinking till 1:00am and I'm still awake at 3:30am. I'm sitting here wide awake now although I don't have to be up in the morning I can guarantee I'll be awake in the wee smalls. This lower back pain has no cause as far as I can tell as I don't really lift anything heavy, I'm just on my feet for a long time (never still, but moving around).

I've got another appointment at the quacks Tuesday morning, I just wish I could sleep. 2 hours sleep a day (if I'm lucky) is just dragging me down.

Tonight (so far) I'm down 6 cans of fizzy yellow stuff and a half bottle of bells and still wide awake!  :o If I go to bed I'm just staring at the glow in the dark stars on the ceiling and will be for a few hours yet. I'm not asking for a diagnosis just venting a bit. Sorry.  :P

You have my total sympathy. I suffered with a bad back from my rugby days for years (in fact had 2 operations) but still I had problems.

You don't want to hear this but I got cured by spending £1,500 on a specialist orthopaedic bed and £650 on an orthopaedic chair.

Since then - touch a lot of wood - I have had one or two bad days in the last 6 years.

Suggest you get the quack to find the root cause and address it quickly before you turn into a Zombie! :y :y ;D ;D

I've never been a great sleeper anyway and I've NEVER played sports. I've never been a follower of any sport. SWMBO enjoys sport more than me. My quack thinks I either have a water problem or a blood problem (I wish he'd make his rather' foreign mind up) so is basically treating me for a sleep problem, which doesn't help when I can't get comfy in bed  >:(

I have some empathy with your predicament, but not sue you should be drinking with your medication at it is supposed to give a similar effect to alcohol.

I have rouble in getting to sleep, the mind starts and that is that, my solution is similar to yours, whisky.  Though once taken I sleep through, mostly, but have to have the right amount, too little and does not work, too much and peed. For day to day use I buy 1.5L bottles from the supermarket, use a little water to make the drink longer.

Appetite is a massive problem for me, since my illness weight is a problem, have huge problems in trying to keep it up, weight :P

So you have my understanding mate....... :)

I never drink and drive, but I do sometimes wonder about the next morning :)

Thanks for your input Mike, I was dry while I was taking the pills, I didn't sleep for 8 days on them! It's not a sciatica type of pain, it's more like a regular dig in the kidneys. I try and mix the drinks to make it last longer. I've had a few nights on just the malts, ended up drinking 2 litres and walking the 3 miles to work the next morning!!!

For day to day, i use supermarke stuff, cos I use falvoured water to dilute it, but, seriously 2.0L in a day, that is a problem, you really need to have this out with your GP

Don't know if it's anything to do with your prob Welung -- but I have recently been diagnosed (guessed at -- in the absence of any other explanation!) with M.E. ..... When I am about to have a bad spell my lower back is a killer !!! If I rest up as I am supposed to (not all day in bed type of rest -- but "zoning out" for 10 mins or so every hour) it eases considerably (never goes though  :(  )  It is a sort of barometer to my general well-being!
Unlike your Temazipam though, I find the diazepam zonks me out really well. Temazepam (sp) is more often prescribed for sleep problems, whereas the diazepam I am on is more for muscle spasms.
I also take co-codamol together with Iboprufen during the day.
Have a word with your GP ---- one of the big probs with back pain is the muscular spasms it causes -- which in turn make the pain worse -- viscious circle time!!!! So it might be worth trying a muscle relaxant as opposed to a sleep inducer ( which isn't working!!!).

Best of luck with it mate. :y

The Bells does that ;D ;D Like I said my Doc is a bit of a dick so gave me Tomazapan to help me sleep rather than treat the symptoms. It would be a great help if he could speak english ;D

Have a look on the internet for something called Melatonin. Its a sleep aid that is really good. I found that if you take one about 20 minutes before going to bed you just go straight off!

Worth a try they are reasonably cheap! :y

Get a second opinion Welung as it seem now that most GP's prescribe meds all too readily rather than explore the problem.  I think also that alcohol is a stimulant so that may not help you at bed time.

If you try having a carbs rich meal (like pasta, rice, spuds etc,) in the evening at your usual time - but watch the quantity, you'll find that sleep comes much more readily.  Also if you have a snack just before bed say of bananas on toast, hot milk or some chamomile tea - no really- these will help you to sleep.

The liver has to process everything that we intake during the course of the day and when it gets overloaded the viscious circle begins and the entire system is stressed - leading to complaints such insommnia

In the end Welung it seems that we now have to take charge of our own health and wellbeing as it is apparent that a lot of GP's are either incompetent or unwilling to do what they should be doing.  At the very least talk to another GP.  It might also be an idea to google sleep deprivation clinics, if there's one near you, that's another potential solution.

Best of luck :y :y

Alternatively, do what an acquaintance of mine once did -- study for an OU degree at night .... mind you, he was an real live insomniac and could survive on short naps
