Title: Windows 7
Post by: Gaffers on 24 June 2009, 22:27:03
I have just installed W7 after dragging my heels until I finally blew my lid with vista and bit the bullet.

First impressions are very good, nice interface easy to use (even the wife may find it more intuitive!) only time will tell on the reliability  :y

I agree, it was pure procrastination on my part that was stopping me.  But now I am settled into my new house I have had the time and motivation to do it  :y

What tweaks have you played with?

I've just bought 2 Laptops (for SWMBO and I), both of which have come with Vista >:( >:( >:(

I'm struggling to get to grips with it TBH but I'm reluctant to upgrade to 7 until I know the bugs have been ironed out :y :y

Are there any driver issues like there were when Vista was released?

I'm off to Brighton tomorrow to see my Dad for the weekend... He's a bit of an IT buff so I'll ask his opinion :y :y :y

The driver issues only came about because the various hardware manufacturers dragged their heels, it wasn't MS's fault.

So far, the Vista drivers for the hardware I have work quite happily under Win 7.

XP is not great on security by default to be honest.  The fact its now in extended support is now probably the final nail it ins coffin.

Not many decent apps for Mac that I would use, and generally the software is too expensive.

I'll stick to Windows ;)

I have a laptop with vista , and a tower ( for the business accounts etc ) on XP . I must admit that I prefer vista I find it very user friendly but thats just my opinion. Again this along with mechanics I know very little about so my main question is :

If I upgrade the xp one to windows 7 and dont like it , is it easy enough to change back to xp ? Any help would be much appreciatted.

Dave :y

OSX has more holes out of the box than Windows though.

It's in extended support because it's 8 years old, which is a very long time in IT as I'm sure you well know.

You can't do an "upgrade", it has to be a clean install.
In fact, I would never do an upgrade even if the OS allowed it anyway....always make it a clean install if you want no problems.

I agree.  I also consider a Service Pack a 'new' OS (particularly XP SP2!) and thus always put on a fresh build before SP'ing it.  Obviously MS are going to make this difficult for future SPs :(
