As seen on the Argos end of catologue offers on TV. As I need a new TV for setting up sky HD then I wondered what members thought of this.
TIA. :y

For me that is a great, quality, make at an excellent price :y :y :y
-
Just parted with my last TV, a 26" Hitachi, paid £429 for it 26 years ago. Only thing that went wrong was the transforer/on-off button.
Cant see this one lasting 26/27 years though

Hope you have measured the gap where its going,as it can be deceiving.Nearly caught me out when i bought one not to long back.Originally wanted a 42" but at the time they only had the 37" in the one we wanted,so when we got it back,it only just fitted perfect, but if would have had the bigger one we would have been in trouble even though i measured it. :y

I reckon it shoud fit in a gap 8 feet wide. ::) :y
-
Yeah i hope so ;D,but what i meant was it also depends on room size,as they can also seem overpowering for the size of room. ;)
-
Hitachi is :y
and the price is also..
if I can find here for that price I would buy two ;D

It's made (under license) by a company called Vestel (aka Bush).
Contrast Ratio - Crap
Viewing Angle - Crap
Response Time - Crap
Overscan Disable - Not possible (Crap)
It's cheap because it's crap....walk away.

No probs, cheers. :y
I dont know what standards to look for in the way of contrast etc.
I actually fancy the Samsung LED at the mo, but price is just daft. So I put a £400 to £500 budget on the first flat screen I buy and then when the LED's drop in price the 1st TV will go in my bedroom.
-
I reckon the 1080P Sonys are good but I don't know if the W5500 is as good as the W4500
-
Not quite in the budget that I want to pay at the moment though Martin
I dont mind paying for quality, but for the money that I have mentioned I at least want a 37"

You ain't gonna get a "decent" 42" 1080p set for £399 Skruntie, you need to stick at least another £100 on that before you even have the pilot alight..let alone start cooking I'm afraid.
PS
The session on the link you posted has expired (that means it doesn't work)

This is the same on I have and it is excellent at the same price as the hitachi

Also rated the best 37" out there for the money, only trouble is that Skruntie wants a 1080p set.

37" min size and must be 1080p :y
-
well it handles 1080p without a problem but may have a drop in proper 1080p quality :y

It doesn't "handle" 1080p at all, it simply downscales the 1080p signal (not that it matters in this particular case really, because Sky isn't true HD to start with).

Well don't bother in any case with this Hitachi model Skruntie.
I have been to Argos to buy one, only to be told that right across Kent and into Sussex they have sold right out, with no more due in as this particular model has been discontinued.
Obviously a new, improved Hitachi model is due out, but no where near as cheap of course as the "clearance" one! ::) ::)
;) ;)

What figures should I be looking for on an LCD?
just seen this at Dixons
http://www.dixons.co.uk/martprd/store/dix_page.jsp?page=Product&sku=200236&camp_id=ppc_tvcamp__LG-42PQ6000_E&gclid=CPiDparLqpsCFU0B4wodklxWBg&source_id=aw#productInformationSection
Extract from page.
Brightness 1500 cd/m2 The greater the brightness the better quality of the picture usually is. However the actual picture quality is determined by how well the brightness and contrast of the TV work together
Contrast 2000000 The higher the contrast ratio the better the picture quality
-
That looks good Skruntie, with a fine spec, but no mention of a 1080 screen, and just "HD Ready". Is that important? :-/ :-/
-
Have you seen the 47" LG set on a very significant offer at Comet?:
http://www.comet.co.uk/sh"My Naff Code Reader"et/product/531464/LG-47LH3000?cm_sp=FeatureEnd-_--_-position1
No nothing about this new technology, so I don't know about the spec being good or bad!! ::) ::) ;) ;)
-
Well spotted Lizzie, I hadnt actually checked the specs out. I was looking at the high numbers for the contrast/brightness as they seemed higher than a lot of others.
http://www.lge.com/uk/tv-audio-video/televisions/LG-plasma-tv-42PQ6000.jsp
res is only 1024 x 758
I am after a 1080P which I think is 1920 x 1080

Well the LG 47" is Pixel resolution: 1920x1080 :y :y

My Brain is starting to hurt.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1080p
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=1080P&btnG=Google+Search&meta=&aq=f&oq=
Some interesting reading, sadly I have far too much on my mind to absorb all the reading. (I have bad memoery retention at the best of times)
-
Well out of all that material, which includes:
"If I had a choice, I would want to watch 1080 material everyday. There is just so much more detail (so much that Vanessa William is complaining) to see. To do that you will need a display that can show 1920x1080 resolution (16:9 wide aspect ratio)."
it certainly seems that the 1920x108O is the ideal resolution, which the 47" produces 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-).
Well that's how it reads to me! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
I'm not sure I should post this as I suspect it will cause you to go into full meltdown ;D
Without attempting to go technical 1080p isn't as good as the mfrs make out, it can be a lot better at the right viewing distance with the right content but it can also be worse than 720p. At 4m with a 40" TV i'm fairly sure that all the extra detail will just blend in and look no better than 720p. What you have to be aware of is that non-HD content could suffer bad pixelation because the sky box has to upscale it fit your screen (try to imagine it doesn't have enough pixels to fit your screen so it expands the picture and trys to 'guess' the colour in between pixels).
The other consideration is Plasma VS LCD. The difference is getting less now but a 1024*768 plasma can give give a better picture than 1920*1080 LCD depending on what you display through it.
Simple comparison:
LCDs now rarely suffer screen burn (if a static picture is displayed for hours), plasmas still carry a risk of this (Panasonic have fairly much beaten this on their plasmas)
LCDs are better for PC inputs.
1080p LCD will display blu-ray DVD's better
Plasmas display moving pictures better with less pixelation (footie, grand prix etc)
Plasmas tend to have darker blacks (contrast)
Plasmas tend to handle bad signals better due to the lower resolution and way they work(freeview, non-HD sky etc)
Your best bet is to read avforums.com but trust me those guys are ott about everything so you need to read between the lines a bit :)
And just so you know after 3 months of convincing myself I needed a 1080p LCD I ended up buying a TX-P42C10 1024*768 plasma and i'm very pleased with it :y
-
So now the question I need to ask, which is better fo gaming. LCD or Plasma
-
What amount did you want to spend Skruntie?

What amount did you want to spend Skruntie?
Was arround 400 to 500. The Samsung I looked at I can get for 599, every where else is 699

Easy question, LCD. Games are notorious for having fixed graphics, health bars etc, plasmas dont like that for long periods of play.

You've probably looked here, I don't think you'll do much better TBH.
http://www.directtvs.co.uk/Samsung_LE37B550_37_Inch_1080p_LCD_TV_LE37B550A5WXXC/version.asp?PID=596
I would have bought this to run the Blu-ray through but for the a/c condenser I need for the car and a digital camera both of which have priority at the moment.
I can justify the condenser without problem and just about sneak the camera in, but the television - not in a month of Sundays ::) ::)
In the long run you might be better throwing the extra £100 in to solve the problem :y :y

A great price Skruntie but I'm sitting just over 2 mts from the screen so a 40" is just too big 8-) 8-)
You also have to be careful with the larger screens and sd reproduction, a lot of stuff doesn't look too clever even though it's up-scaled :(

Been reading this lot- totally lost. :-[ :-[ :-[
It was so much easier when Teles only had 405 lines with black & white pictures, terrible sound & only the BBC or ITV to choose from ;D ;D ;D ;D
Good luck though Skruntie :y :y

TWhere the TV is at he mo is 4.3 metres from wall to wall. So my arm chair takes the focal distance to the wall down to about 3.8 metres minus the new TV what ever I choose. So I recckon a minmum distance of at least 3.5 mrtres in my case.

....while the 37" is the size I would choose - if I were bold enough to make the purchase without clearance that is - if you can get the 40" Samsung from PRC for the price indicated, it must be worth the extra over the original price you were working to :y
-
So now the question I need to ask, which is better fo gaming. LCD or Plasma
LCD all teh way, the comments above about the plasma being better for this adn that are floored for real world use.
Pixelation is no issue, the LCD re-fresh rate is easily fast enough to deal with anything you can practicaly throw at it, the the darks, as mentioned before, are not darker on a plasam in real use due to the decay time of the phosphor.
And its 1080P all the way.....and not it must be P and not i

If you are still interested Skruntie in the Hitachi set about which you started this thread, then Argos have just e-mailed me to state that more, but limited, stock has been received into their warehouses :y :y
