Presently doing a wood shed in the old orchard.

Have accumulated a lot of cut wood in the past so I need somewhere to keep it.

Only trouble is, before I go much further I need to take 5, 40ft leylandii away.  The finer material I'll pass throught the shredder but the heavier limbs will have to be reduced to log form............. and a log splitter would be just what the tree doctor ordered.

Will watch with interest on you progress Debs :y

Will take some pics when I work out how to operate my new camera (Samsung WB500)

I'm continuing to sort out all those "useful bits" I picked up over the years. Just come across a satellite Sky2PC card I never knew I had !.

PS anyone want some ISA network cards, RJ45 or BNC  ;D ;D ;D

Ouch, your arms  :'(  I got a leather bolero I use, gives total coverage from sparks, esp when working overhead.

Well that must be a very posh log splitter then :)
Are you running it from a tractor or does it have its own pump?

I have a portable hyd. power pack to hand (ex. Fire and Rescue), but the ram I have for the splitter, is quite a large one (100mm. dia. x 750mm. stroke) and I worry the cycle time will be too slow with such a small displacement pump....so, there`s always the Dickey-John on hand to boss the oil about. :y

Great looking dogs by the way - used to have a rough Haired Collie (lassie style) myself - most intelligent dog I ever had. Used to open doors herself if she wanted to get out of a room - handle & knob! ;D ;D ;D

Been clearing out the garage after the recent move, sorting tools how I like 'em and getting rid of a lot of crap on eGay.  Put some final varnish on the boat so she is ready to launch on 25th (big party down my way if anyone is interested) and did 2 runs to the tip to get rid of some more cardboard boxes.....

This thread fascinated me Debs as I have always fancied doing a bit of welding on cars and my beloved railway steam engines when I was helping to restore them.  However, I always managed to shy away from it, being a little concerned about the dangers of doing it and rather letting the men do the job ::) ::) ::) ::)

Judging from the pictiure, you obviously know what you are doing and I can only admire you 8-) 8-).

What was the end results Debs?  Have you got any pictures?  I do not really know what a "log splitter" is!! ::) ::) :D :D ;)

Welding is not hard.....you learn basic techniques and the real skill is in the preperation and being able to set the welding device up correctly first.

A log splitter is something like this:

or

In simple terms, you use a hydraulic ram to push the log against a fixed wedge to split it down its length

Welding is easy! The skill, as Mark says, is setting the machine up correctly so it produces the strongest weld. I'd teach you if you're ever up this way :y

The secret to welding is to get one (not SIP shite though) and have a go.

Sadly, once you can weld you get given more welding to do (like lcoomotive panels!)  ;D ;D

Thanks Wellung, that's kind! :-* :-* 8-) 8-)  I may well take you up on that one day, as I think I could save potential future garage bills by knowing this skill.  My old Toyota cost me about £200 in welding jobs, as this was the one thing I couldn't do myself.  In fact it was one of the reasons I decided to trade in that 19 year old car as I could foresee other welding jobs on the horizon! ::) ::) ;)

Cheapest one i could find on machine mart is this:
