Title: Bob's East Anglia meet pics
Post by: bob.dent on 06 July 2009, 11:28:01
Here a selection of the few pics I managed to take while relatively soberish. My mate Steve took a fair few pics and will be e-mailing over to me when he gets a chance so will post them up as and when.

When I was chatting to Paul (Lazydocker) yesterday morning, he was saying that the site owner's were concerned about that and next year I belive it will be an adult only site with a minimum age of 16. Shame for those with families as it's such a beautiful location but I guess safety comes first.

very true

unless they did some sort of proper barrier, having any young kids there would put parents on the edge

we thought exactly the same, and wouldnt have been happy if we had taken the kids.  Would have managed, but a very close eye would have to be kept, water often fascinates kids

A barrier would have ruined the feel of the site I reckon.

I have a brother who had a fascination with water at a young age.  Dad never wrapped any of us in cotton wool, and that brother quickly learnt the error of his ways ;D

A different but related story - as some people know, when I was little, we used to have an appartment on a Cypriot beach - open our back door, walk through the garden, through the gate, and you were on the sand. Another 30 odd yards, your feet were wet.  I was a toddler at the time, but soon learned what my depth was waterwise. Addionally, maybe I was excessively clever or something, but if my parents said no, then I didn't do it   :-?. I guess it was because there was no Naughty Step or other such crap back then. If I misbehaved, my arse came in contact with Dad's hand. Or worse if I had been very naughty.

As another aside, I remember Dad teaching one of my brothers to swim. We all went out in the boat (we had a speedboat as well), about 30ryds out, threw him in.  He learned to swim PDQ.  Wish dad had done the same to me, as I was 10 before I could swim without floats  :-[

I do feel some of the modern parenting techniques that parents have to follow (either by law or by peer pressure), such as the reasoning with toddlers, or the Naughty Step are just creating a whole bucket load of problems for later.

The site is absolutely beautiful but, sadly, I feel we won't be able to use it next year :( :( :(

Unfortunately the site is going Adults only for many reasons... The riverbank safety being well down the list!

Unfortunately they can't put any form of permanent structure along the riverbank due to Environment Agency regulations. But it has been fantastic :y :y :y

TBH I'm looking for somewhere we can book in it's entirety for next year so we don't have such concerns about noise... Leave it with me, I have a couple of ideas :y :y :y

Oh... And I agree with TB in some respects... I learnt that no meant no and did as I was told or paid the price. I don't think it made me a bad person but I do feel that there are too many children about in this modern, PC age, who know they can get away with murder and push it as far as they can ::) ::)

Opps, were we too noisy then?  As soon as I got a couple of vans down from yours, I felt you couldn't hear anything?  :-/

Not at all... We got a little rowdy a couple of times but kept it quiet as a general rule... No complaints from the Managers other than the Kiddies at the start of the weekend, but that was soon sorted :y :y :y

Oh, and I did hear a murmur about someone constantly using the trees as a urinal but nothing was actually said :y :y :y

Fantastic logic TB! How many children do you have again?????????
Do you have any classic advice on how to explain to an autistic 5 year old about the dangers of water then? >:(
Guess some are childless for a reason! Suspect i won't be the only one to resent that type of comment from someone who has no kids! >:(

Joking aside, I knew you would be the first to bite and pipe up.  With that in mind, I had H in the back on my mind, knowing there are no all encompassing answers for everyone. One of my colleagues has a severely autistic son, so I am pretty familiar with the condition, and that their talents lie somewhere other than being fully aware of what is around them.  From the few times I have met H, he certainly seems to have the condition in a mild form, which if that is true, is great :y.  Anyway, part of my comment still applies - the reasoning with young kids that never appears to work.

You know damn well the sort of kids my comments were aimed at as well ;)

Ah, but it does allow me to have a different insight one things, without the emotional attachments ;)

Rightly or wrongly, I disagree with many modern parenting techniques. Bad behaviour, imho, should be punished (not necessarily physically). And a naughty step is not a punishment. If my parents had sent me to any naughty step/corner/whatever, I would have classed that as a victory, and gone on to the next stage to see how far I could push them.  Instead, I got smacked, had my bike taken away, or wasn't allowed out to play (or all 3 if I'd been a particularly bad boy ::)). As a result, I think my parents did a fantastic job with my 3 brothers, my sister, and I.

We may not agree, but we are each entitled to our own views, and hopefully, just hopefully, may be able to understand the other person's point of view :)
