Here's one to make you all laugh, laugh because i don't actually know the exact real answer.
My grandson was in the car today with me when i put the cruise control on and he asked the inevitable question how does it work?
I told him the car is driving itself and its magic
Thing is the more i thought about it the more i realised that a new topic on OOF was on the cards.
So guys how does it actually work? and moreso how does it know when your going either up a hill or down a hill? does it apply the brakes or does it limit the fuel (or both) or lastly is it really MAGIC?

That actually makes interesting reading.
I thought that cruise control systems did use the brakes? I would swear that I felt mine on my old car dabbing the brakes when going downhill.
I assumed it used the ABS system to do this? :-/
