Title: dvd upscaling versus blu-ray
Post by: Bacon Butty Man on 29 July 2009, 11:06:52
hi guys not been around for a while cos i only own a plastic car nowadays :(
anyway
i bought (out of the paper £50) a sharp blu-ray player last week to replace my liteon upscaling dvd recorder, the tv i use is a 1080i lcd dmtech with samsung screen, i wanted to try like for like movies so i got a copy of casino royal on blu-ray and compared it to my dvd version, the blu-ray was really clear and the detail was awsome, but, then i put my dvd version on thru the upscaling dvd player and i could not really tell the difference if any at all, i believe that if you dont have a tv of 50" up then dvd upscaling is the way to go, i have now placed my blu-ray player up for sale,
while the blu-ray player does play dvd's the quality is actually not great,  any one else had a blu-ray and noticed this, i also think that sky hd is not that much better than normal picture

I had Sky HD fitted 2 weeks ago, but rather than so to the exsoence of an LCD I bought a Dell 24" Wide screen with 1920x1080 res and an HDMI input.

For a week I watached the wide screenvia HDMI and the CRT via Scart in 4:3 and founf the CRT to be far better quality just missing a hell of a lot of screen at each side.

Now I am hoping it aint goint to cost me a furtune to get a picture quality somewhere near the picture quality of my CRT, and thats not even veiwing the HD channels as so far they have only showed a load tosh. :-/

Your main problem is that you dont have a true HD Tv (1080i is not full HD) and hence why you see little difference

I have a proper HDTV and there is a huge difference between HDTV broadcasts and SDTV broadcasts (BBC1 vs BBC HD) and also between DVD and  BluRay.

If you cannot see the extra detail with BluRay there must be a problem in the chain, either a poor transfer, or a poors player, wrongly interconnected or a poor TV

....this is where the DMTEC unit BBM is using shows its limitations in all probability :-/ :-/

HD is a bit of a minefield.

Quite a lot of stuff is 720 (vertical lines) which is technically HD.

Other kit can be deceiving: there a re a few camcorders (even professional ones) that claim 1920x1080 but actually RECORD a down-converted 1440x1080 then up-convert it on playback.  You have to read the fine print to realise it.

As for Blue Ray.  It should look better on any HD-Ready or better display.  Trouble is, you could be going through down-conversion and up-conversion (which makes it SD) if you are not careful.  Add to that that if the source material was only ever produced in SD there is no way they can improve the resolution even though it's up-converted.  It's like the "Digitally Re-Mastered" CDs.  They were analogue recordings (which defined the quality) and the label (Digitally Re-Mastered) was a marketing trick.

little point in HD with small tv. And must be HD ready obviously. The differance is very clear on mine, however due to the current lack of HD contents and broadcasts i bought mine with standard def as a priority as thats what i Ill be watching mostly.
The combination of the tv and skyHD etc  means i am very happy with pic quality no matter the source.
Your Tv is letting you down old bean.

...that's the way to do it Chris - choose the right display and the results won't dissapoint. :y

BBM is running a DMTEC unit which isn't well regarded unfortunately :(

A very, very good upscaler can perceive to be close to full HD (1080p), but when watched side-by-side, the extra detail is normally obvious.

Casino Royale, as it happens, isn't a great example, as titles aside, the difference between the DVD and BR versions isn't that huge.

An upscaler doesn't replace the detail that's been lost earlier in the chain (or never captured).  It may reduce jagged edges but it can't do much more.

Exactly, but most upscalers are pretty sub-standard.  The very best make some clever judgements about filling in missing info, hence my 'perceive' comment.

Though BR quality is dependent upon the detail being there in the first place, and I don't think the Casino Royale BR is that much better than upscaled DVD during the film (very noticable during title sequence though)

Have def. noticed that some BR are more BR than others. Cheap skates....Transformers, jaw dropping quality imho. Flags of our fathers.....  Rubbish, seen better on dvd.

I have noticed a big difference in quality between Bluray disks

As said previously, a lot of Bluray transfers are rubbish and a con.

I bought a BR copy of Full Metal Jacket and it was worse than the version I'd seen on telly the week before :o

I took it back and got a copy from a different version and the change was instant.

This site is pretty good at rating not only the film, the quality of the copy transfer :y

As people have mentioned, the size of the screen makes a lot of difference. I have an HD projector - only 720p but project to about 103 inches and the difference between HD and non HD is huge on that sort of scale, even though it's not 1080p. A lot of people can't tell the difference between 720p and 1080p on anything smaller than 42 inches.
