Title: Home Cinema Ethusiasts - Help!
Post by: TheBoy on 07 August 2009, 17:43:08
What I think I may need is a DVI + SPD/IF to HDMI adapter.  Or better still, and HDMI + SPD/IF (external) to HDMI adapter.

Anyone know of anything?

http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&cr=countryUK|countryGB&ei=pFx8StKhB6jbjQeJmdCIBw&sa=X&oi=spell&resnum=0&ct=result&cd=1&q=HDMI+%2B+SPDIF+%28external%29+to+HDMI+adapter&spell=1

http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=HDMI+%2B+SPDIF+%28external%29+to+HDMI+adapter&btnG=Search&meta=

if you limit the search to the Uk then it seems limited, but if you do a full web search there seems to be some adaptors available.

Appogee seem the most popular (But not cheap)

Well, you don't want the audio to go into HDMI if you can help it. Keep it in SPDIF - the lesser of the evils.

I kinda agree :y

On the old system, I set Vista to use SPD/IF, then TOSLinked the optical out to the amp, and the coax spdif out to the spdif input on vga card, which it then sent up hdmi.

Then Mrs TB knew to use HDMI2 on telly for recorded tv, and I could switch on amp and use VGA on telly (both vga and hdmi cables connected to telly, set up as clone) for films etc.

Now, as the onboard video card of new mobo (and I don't want to go to discrete video card for a host of technical reasons, mainly around fans!) doesn't have a spdif in connector, I can't quite set it up the same.

So thinking along lines of setting output to spdif, sending coax straight to amp, and toslink to a spdif > 2 channel analogue adapter (preferrably downmixed).

Would that work? Anyone know of a cheap spdif to analogue converter (only for tv stereo speakers, quality not that important).

I know men love gadgets generally, but this is another thread that makes me ask the question, "Why?" :-/ :-/

There is just so much bother in knowing about connectors, capitability, cables, formats, etc, etc!  What happened to just plugging things in and enjoying?? ::) ::)

Yes, I know I am a simple women who cannot grasp such things, but can any of you honestly say all those problems / challenges / whatever you call them are worthwhile and do not give you unnecessary stress? ::) ::) ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;) ;)

So you just need a cheap DAC?

A bit overkill for watching telly but:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140337036191

I've had a couple from the same seller and now use one on the output of my Squeezebox and my CD player. They sound excellent, especially with a few little mods. Just add a mains transformer and put it in a box and Bob's your uncle.

Just get her to use the amp - doesn't take much training.

Sue used to do this with DVD but 5.1 LF and RF doesn't contain speech so she had to use it.

PS3 - no TV sound at all

Quite easy to do

If the spdif is set to 5.1, what would that device do - just present the front side channels?

Virtual Audio Cable - i small driver from Russia - almost does exactly what I need.  If only it worked for 5.1 :(

Not a lot, I reckon. It's not got any intelligence. :-/
