My full and heartfelt sympathies are with you Lance.

I lost my 8.5 year old Rottie, Josh yesterday. He was struck with arthritis and was unable to walk. He went to sleep yesterday at 19.25 at the vets.

The most terrible decision I have ever had to make  :'( :'(

God help us and our soft hearts  :'(

My thoughts go out to you Laserlance & Tonka.
I've had to go through it three times with my dogs & every time it's extremely hard. Chin up & don't feel any guilt as hard as it is.

Sorry to hear the sad news -- but there are, no doubt, many happy memories.

It's always difficult when these decisions have to be made LL - but be made they must - whenever our friends are in distress.  That's part of the responsibility we shoulder when we care for and share our lives with them.

Look to times past when you received the affection that only a well cared for and loved friend can give and be satisfied that you did the responsible thing for Jonty, still loving and caring for him in his time of need :y

Your heart may be heavy at the moment Tonka but your Spirit shines.

We can express no fonder love for our friends than to made these decisions when we would prefer not to and when we would rather hold on to them than do what's necessary for their welfare.

I'm sure that Josh gave you much pleasure and affection during your time together and that's his parting gift, a thank you in the many fond memories that remain with you and your family.

I'm sure that you in return will show him the utmost respect by fondly remembering and continuing to love him from this point forward, how better can we honour their memory? :y

Hi Lance. You have my sympathies. I'm a Sussex lad originally, Dad was a vet & we always had spaniels, i adore them so understand your grief. We had Setters, Terriers & the odd Heinz but spaniels were always my favourite.
I hope you & your family muddle through as well as can be expected. Are you getting another? :'(

Sorry to hear about your loss, It's like loosing one of the family. But rest assured you did make the right decision to prevent Jonty suffering. We had to have Dino our Weimerana put to sleep nearly two years ago, and still miss him. I don't know if you are going to get another dog.We where going to leave it a few months before we got another pup but the feeling of something missing was to much and we got another Weimerana within three weeks, in our case it helped with our loss a lot.

Hello mate,

If you'd have asked me a few years ago, I wouldn't have understood why it was so upsetting to lose a dog.

Having since had a couple of lovely dogs myself for the last couple of years or so, and experiencing the bond you have with them, I would be deeply upset if anything happened to my spaniels.

Despite trying hard I haven't been the model dog owner - yet the mutts show unconditional love nonetheless - and forgiveness - you cannot help but make a close bond.

Sorry for your loss - I hope your right hand man is now at rest, and that you get some comfort from that  :)

Lance, Tonka I know you pain.

4 years ago we had Barney, a Heinz 57, put to sleep due to seperation anxiety and severe aggression towards me. Even though he bit me several times and I had to have surgery to re-attach my right index finger, there were, and still are no hard feelings.

Took us over three years before we felt able to get another dog.

Now we have the two bears, our lives are full again, but Barneys lead still hangs over the end of the bed.

Take care.
