the longest ive ever seen a film take to convert and burn is 30 mins and thats using near enough the whole 4.7 gig on the dvd
what set up are you running
-
at 16x (drive will average about 10x/12x over entire burn), approx 7-10m, plus verify (5m)
At 1x, about 75m
Drive?
Burning software?
-
its my friends computer, she has just bought a brand new LG drive, and is using the nero software that came with it. attempting to burn a 700mb AVI movie, that has been converted to DVD format (vob files etc) as nero wouldnt burn the avi direct. have confirmed that the DVD files will play, by opening the VOB file in powerDVD player thingy
-
16x is too fast ---- I limit mine to 4x -- obviously takes longer but get fewer coasters. Average time ( without verifying) 10 - 12 mins.

I would say it is a software issue, Nero is poo to be honest, I use convertxtoDVD much quicker, could also be a codec issue if they haven't been updated, google k-lite and install the full pack :y

Never ever ever ever ever install those gay codec packs. They are bodged together by idiots, and install too much conflicting junk. Windows media interface is flakey enough on its own, without hacked about junk being thrown on it.

so you're just burning the vobs and associated files, not getting nero to convert on the fly?

K-lite I haven't had an issue with but I have used others that are a nightmare to deal with

K-Lite is one of the worse of the well known ones. Clearly packaged by somebody with a lonely brain cell.
When it comes to the Windows Media interface, minimalism is the goal for stability and performance.
For XP and Vista, ffdshow is probably the only additional codec you need, maybe a hardware accelerated one for mpeg2 (eg Cyberlink).
For W7 users, no real codecs needed for the vast majority of formats.

The full version of nero has its place, but its not a tool I use any more.
Like Martin Imber, I use imgburn to burn img/iso/nrg formats. Imbgburn is freeware. I use Roxio's Creater Basic for other stuff, namely because I have a licence on each of my laptops and on my desktop for it, included when I bought them. And it works perfectly on Windows 7.
Very rarely do I need to use anything else...

If its suck at 10%, its crashed. Nero does that quite a lot. Try the burn again.

If that's the express version (which it probably is), then ditch it and get the full version if you want to burn a movie DVD that is fully compliant.
PS
Forget all the 16x claims, the drive MAY reach that speed right towards the end of the burn - but it's never going to achieve anywhere near that rate in real life.
Besides, you don't want to go much faster than 8x - and only then if you are using quality media.
-

What program was used for the conversion/authoring?

You heard it here first, KillerWatt and I agree on something :o. I agree with him on all points above, except perhaps using the full Nero (sounds like she is not too good with computers, so Nero probably not best option imho)

WinAvi its called. found on google.

Always stick at same point in the burn?

WinAVI won't make a proper job of the conversion, hence Nero is stalling (the full version reports the actual errors, where as the castrated version tells you nowt).
Use ConvertX to DVD by VSO software, and it will work first time.

and this is the only software we need. this will do the burning too? or just the converting?
-
and this is the only software we need. this will do the burning too? or just the converting?
It will do the conversion, authoring (which is what WinAVI fails to do), and burn it back to disc so that you end up with a fully compliant movie DVD that can be played in ANY DVD player.
PS
Haven't got a clue whether you can convert/burn a full disc with the unregistered version of ConvertXtoDVD, but if you can't then PM me.
