Title: Mk1 Escort.

How do you price a car like this? I guess it's value is what some one will pay as it's unique. 8-)

I wouldn't have bought it back in the days so........why buy it now? :-/

I would & did. RWD Mk1 & 2 Eccy's  command silly prices even for a resto project, especially the 2 door variants. I would'nt touch any FWD Eccy with a bargepole though, even the RS Turbos, just don't like 'em.

beautiful car. could do with a bigger engine, but hey..
think it is a tad over priced but still worth multiple thousands tho.

Nice car, takes be back few years, driven a good few Mk 1 & 2 Escorts in , van, saloon and estate. :)
Price, no different to the Mig, it is worth what someone will pay for it :D :D

Had a few mark 1's and 2's over the years. Wouldn't mind the engine out of it for a Morris Minor Project that's sitting here ;) A touch over priced too IMHO considering they were just under £500 new ;D ;D

I have to agree with Steve.

It's nothing special at all, it wasn't worth a wank when it was new, and it's worth even less of a wank now.

PS

As for the "dry" storage....there's probably more failed (or failing) components through lack of use than what would have failed if it was used daily.

Just looked at the seller's history, looks like a bit of a dealer, bt he's smiling all the way to the bankon this one.  Probably aquired it for peanuts on a part x.

He'll only be smiling if he finds a mug that thinks a bog standard 1300 L (crossflow lump) Escort is worth anything.

In reality, the only Escorts holding their money were the "specials" (Lotus, Mexico, RS, etc)........the standard ones ain't worth crap.

Someone obviously thinks they can buy it, mothball it, and make money on it. I'm not so sure Del.

Not a direct answer to your response Steve, but here's my take on it...

I like the oldies (I like them so much, I shagged my mother in law), but I wouldn't even rate a "special" (eg, Mexico, RS, etc) as being worth anything these days.

Yes they were the dogs gonads in their day, but their day was 30 years ago and we've managed quite a bit since then (managed so much in fact, that even a crappy Fiesta outhandles the old MKI/MKII Escorts...and isn't that far off outperforming them either).

I never said the RS versions weren't worth anything (although they ain't worth tens of thousands in anybody's book), but the current topic is referring to a bog standard 1300 L Escort (and that ain't worth crap).

There is a bog standard mk1 escort near where I work,it hasnt moved in donkeys years covered in moss/mould /rust etc.The bloke has put a sign in the window saying "not for sale" as he is apparently fed up with people knocking on his door trying to buy it. ::)
The fact is that people pay a lot of money for a bit of nostalgia, Sporty Escorts were fun in there day, sweet handling etc, but tbh they would be laughably slow today.
Having said all that the bloke opposite has a lovely rally prepared mk1 RS1600 which he competes in classis rallies and I do drool over it every time I see it.
From what Ive seen, people pay huge money for good or restorable escort bodyshells, they can source the parts to turn them into a "quick car" but the shells are rare.

It'll be like a carefully preserved 'flower' kept vacuum packed for thirty years.soon as you take it out of the bag it will turn to rust in front of your eyes.
Cars made them days where designed to go rusty, well over priced i recon.
Now find me a mk1 capri and i'd pay that.

Bang on the money Albs...it's the shell that has the potential to fetch the money  :y

Mixed bag of responses. No i would'nt give that money for it but many of you are missing the point. I don't think the buyer will strip it for the 2 door shell & turn it into a 2.1 caged up track car. This is in no way a bad thing to do with a restored shell & the resulting car would be a riot to drive but there are cheaper projects availiable. This is a one off of a very popular car & if genuine then probably unique. Does everything have to be a Mexico/RS2000 to be worth saving?
As for killerwanks comments i won't dignify them with a reply. ::)
Despite the outlandish price i hope some one really enjoys this car. The fact it's a bog standard 1300L makes it worth more as most were unloved so never survived.

Once again....god how many times do some of you need telling???? It's a one off. Of course being an old fart i no nothing of classic cars & need some upstart with an auto trader site to set me right. Well thankyou for your pearls of wisdom i can now see where i've been going wrong.
This forum is'nt what it used to be due to street scum joining recently...wish it had'nt got so big. I'm trying hard but fast losing interest. I don't mind differing opinions on any subject but the chav element is creeping in like a virus.

As has been said many times, a car is worth what someone'll pay for it. Assuming the highest bidder is serious, his bid speaks for itself.

It is indeed a one-off. Regardless of that, it wouldn't be my cup of tea. It is not a car that'd be any fun to drive standard and, if you did drive it at all, let alone modify it, it would lose all of that "value". Cars that you can't drive are pointless IMHO but there are those who like to collect them. Each to their own.

I would rather start with a ropey old shell, lob decent suspension and a modern engine at it and drive it, mostly sideways, like I stole it, personally. :y

I can see that car in a Ford showroom or with a collector, I would hate to think that a buyer was buying it for the shell, to turn it into a sporty version :'(
Want a 'new classic' then buy a Mini, you can buy a new shell off the shelf :-/

I have driven those, as used by Russell Brookes of 'Andrews Heat For Hire' fame.  Driven all his spare cars fro Mk 1 Escort up to Manta.... :)

Much to much money for a kart spring based live axle boat!

Not a bad car in its day but, over priced and not a pleasent thing to use on the modern roads.

There aren't many vehicles that are pleasant to use on modern roads, but that is only because the roads are f***ed.

I would argue that Mike (dare I! :D) as my brand new 1972 Escort was much better to drive than one of my then boy friends Anglia.  It was more refined, punchier, but yes I still had to fit a radio although at least it had a heater!! ;D ;D ;D ;) ;)
