Well despite the talk of "Authorization to Repair" by RSA and the repair garage, it turns out that my poor car is to be written off :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(.
No surprise really to many, including me, but why the hell did the insurance and garage people use that previous phrase, and why has it taken 11 days for them to finally contact me and make an offer??!! >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(
Anyway, the offer at the moment is £1,500, or I could retain the car and receive £1,140 (allowing for a 24% reduction).
I have obviously stated I am not happy with the offer, and the claims assessor has challenged me to find adverts of a like for like Omega so he can ask RSA for more.
The question is also could it be repaired with second hand parts, and how much would this cost? :-/ :-/ Unlike with mechanical matters, I have not got a clue about bodywork repairs!! :'(
Advice on this would be most welcome please! ;) ;)
-
Sorry to hear they want to write your car off ,lizzie :( :( hopefully you will get a better offer and find a suitable replacement for it :y :y
-
its no surprise to me either looking at the damage.
Looking at the amount needed to be replaced / re-sprayed it don't think its going to be economical to repair.
I would take the money, keep the car and break it.
-
Sorry to hear that ... I thought ""Authorization to Repair" meant exactly that .. :(
You could try pointing the assesor here ...
http://users.autoexposure.co.uk/rogerbuddenautomobiles/search.cfm?
(then click "showroom")
A few highly priced miggies that show they are worth something ..... :)

Just wish I could afford one of those! ::) ::) :D :D :D ;) ;)

I'm sorry to say it Lizzie but I knew you wouldn't get the car back repaired :(
I also dont think its worth trying to repair it as the rear quater is welded to the car plus it may well need a pull to straighten the chassis out :'(

Crap offer, insist on enough for a 3.2 Elite
-
That's a shame Lizzie, as has been said it looks as if it needs a pull on a jig in case the floor is damaged and to ensure the rear shell is not distorted and doors open properly. Replacing a rear wing is not impossible, I did so on my last miggy, but you start getting into questions about shell strength in case of a further accident etc.
As regards similary speced cars, remember this http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1255430703

Sorry to hear of your miggies demise :- :-/ :-Lizzie...........However £1500......is not a bad offer.........and if you hold out .....it may well be improved. :) :) ;) ;)
-
Sorry to hear that LZ, defiantely hold out for a better offer as your car was so clean :y
-
Another one bites the dust I am afraid. TBH that's not a bad first offer -- but the rule is always try for more ::) At the least go for the full offer with the return of the car. You will get a few quid for parts.
-
My missis works in car insurance on the legal side, dealing with claims and injuries from RTAs.
As said, you need to prove the car's worth and pointing out adverts is a good start and throwing a shedload of figures at them might just convince them.
Always reject the first offer only if you are absolutely sure the car is worth more and doesn't have any undeclared mods.
Don't let them take the salvage away (OK, so not always an ideal option) from you, as you could end up paying for storage as the case goes on.
Good luck, and pm me for any other advice (it might take a while for her to reply though).
-
Here in Turkey we consider those as an unimportant accident and repair them within 3-4 days..
but if you are very fussy (or picky dont know the suitable word) like me I would measure the distances and compare them to another miggy .. and also check the rear parts..and if necessary bring them to the original measurements by a machine called robot (here) which I do for every car I own..
Of course this will increase the repair cost and time..but its worth..
however in your country repair costs are extremely high and car prices are unbelievably low.. so you decide.. :-/
-
The question is also could it be repaired with second hand parts, and how much would this cost?
You can repair it with anything you like so long as it has not been tagged as a Cat A or Cat B (obviously you still have to make sure you comply with the Construction & Use Act).
As far as cost goes, that depends on whether you are doing it yourself (or getting someone to do it for you) - or whether you hand it over to a bodyshop.
As already said, £1500 is a good offer (in fact, that is maximum book), although I certainly wouldn't accept the excess of £360.
-
Sorry to hear about your Mig Lizzie, when concidering the insurance offer make sure that you compare the offer with dealer price not private or trade in theirs a heck of a difference
-
The insurance companies must eventually be coming round to Joe PUblic's way of thinking.
Our insurance company have made their first offer tonight. The car was a 52 plate Astra Comfort AUTO for which they've offered £2500 ....... not bad I think for a first attempt. I still consider it to be worth a bit more, from a rarity point of view if nothing else. There's 1 on Autotrader & a couple on eBay. :-/
-
Rarity doesn't mean a lot to insurance until it becomes a recognised classic Andy.

True! But as was said ... I think it might have even been you ::) ;) .... supply & demand counts too! :y

Thanks for everyone's input which has been MOST useful.
Indeed on the basis of your advice I have pushed up the insurance company's offer now to £1,650, which they have accepted.
Although I have the hassle of now searching for a replacement Omega (oh yes, I am not leaving the fold of big engined Vauxhalls after all these years!!), I feel that after looking at what's available on Auto Trader and elsewhere, £1,650 is a good fair figure. After all I really only paid £2,000 for her 18 months ago!
Time to move on ( I have got better things to do than have hassle over an old car!), hand back the lovely 'E' Class Merc 320 CDI (if you can ever afford to, I recommend strongly buying one!! :-* :-* :-* :-*:y :y :y :y :y :y) and get hopefully a nice Mig, aiming for a 3.2 Elite if possible :D :D :D :D ;)

Great news that things are now settled Ms Zoom, hope you find a replacement without too much difficulty. :-* :-* 8-) :y

Do you keep the old mig -- or is she consigned to the scrap yard ?
-
On the subject of insurance values. Any car that is written off between now and feb must be considered worth at least 2k with the scrappage deal :y
hint ::)

I am not surprised given the tremendous acceleration from 0-100 that is possible (I achieved that, at most, in under 5 seconds, and trying hard not to spin the rear wheels!!) :-* :-* :-* And this is a diesel, which you would never suspect once driving!! :o :o :o 8-) 8-) 8-)
Just a beautiful car though; everything seems automatic. Lights; wipers; central locking 1 minute after moving off; parking sensors rear, front, and sides of wings; main lights on when unlocking car in dark places; folding door mirrors, and goodness knows what else I haven't yet discovered!! :D :D :D 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-);) ;)

Sounds like it would annoy the t**ts off me. ;) Each to their own though. :)

Sorry Lizzie but that is simply not possible.must have been using one old DLK,s Timex,s as a stopwatch. ;) :D ;D
Bugatti Veyron does 0-99.4mph in 5.5 seconds. ::)
Diesel power mag. online say it does 0-60 mph in 6.6 secs. :y

Alright Albs, I must admit to perhaps getting carried away a bit! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;) ;)
However, believe me when I say 0-100 I achieved in certainly 7 seconds at most :o :o 8-) 8-) The "push" in the small of the back when accelarating is the best I have experienced in recent years , and is most certainly VERY fast from 0-100 (on a motorway from stationery on the hard shoulder with a clear road). I am afraid to say that although I love Omega's and will definitely be buying another, they are very slow in acceleration compared to the Merc's performance! :o :o
For those, including me, that thinks the V6 Omega's engine compartment is full and tight, you may be interested to see the E320's engine area:

This afternoon I have had a heated conversation with my insurance company over when they can get the £1,650 to me.
They have explained they can only send a cheque as they do not have my bank details as I pay my premium via the AA, and their system cannot accept the details now to wire the money into my bank!! They then explained the cheque would not be sent until the end of this week, and when I reminded them of the forthcoming postal strike, they stated there was "nothing they could do"!!!!! ::) ::) ::) ::) >:( >:( >:(
I was fuming, as by the time I get the cheque and cleared it through my account it will be nearer two weeks time >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(
Anyway, I am going to have to put up with the Merc for at least two more weeks, as I can have it for up to 7 days from the time I receive the cheque :P :P :P :P :P .......and the insurance company who covers the idiot who ran into me will have to take the extra costs..........shame!! ::) ::) ::) ::) ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D :y :y :y :y

So do I Cem! 8-) 8-) 8-) How often do we get the chance to have a situation where one insurance company's inefficiency costs another insurance money, and the customer enjoys the benefits in the meantime! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Why were you fuming then? I would be happy to have that merc for two weeks :)

Why were you fuming then? I would be happy to have that merc for two weeks :)
Because of the way my insurance company is so inflexiable and basicly says "stuff the customer, we will do things our way only to help us, not them!!"
I will have had the Merc for four weeks + in the end, but that is because my insurance through the AA allows for it when I am not the guilty party. Nothing to do with my insurance company. ;) ;) ;)

Isn't that what insurance companies do best? ::) ::)
'Our' insurance company have up'd their offer today from £2500 to £2900 which we thought was quite acceptable.
The girl I spoke to yesterday seemed to think the money was coming out of her own pocket. This is what you're getting she said till I pointed out that we'd to accept their offer & we were not supposed to lose out. She kept on harping about there being no Astra Comfort auto's on Autotrader to be able to compare ......
