Anyone know of a quick chart for all the MS Windows O/|S Memoery usage.
Thinking if doing a dual boot or may be multiple boot PC.
Have seen a mention of a max of 3.5GB of ram for Vista, not sure if that is all versions.
Also any extra memory, does it benifit printing/scanner etc as a buffer.
I have the option of fitting either 2 x 2gb or 4 x 2gb when the new motherboard arrives. but no point in fitteing 8 gb if it goes unused.
CPU will be quad core and for now will be using an 8800GTX.
O/S at this point is undecided, but may well end up with XP Pro, vista and windows 7 so I can have a play as I have had no experience of Vista what so ever as yet. But know from reading the forum that windows 7 is the way to go.

IIRC 32 bit WIndows can't address more than 3.5 Gb. If you're going to run them as VMs, though, I guess it depends on the hypervisor as to whether it can allocate 3.5Gb to each VM or 3.5 Gb total.

.. but if, as you imply, you're just going to have multiple boot options, I'd say not much point in over 4Gb unless you're using 64 bit OSs.

32bit system no more than 3.5Gb and that includes gfx memory
64bit will handle a lot more but not sure of the upper limit :y

All NT based version up to Vista used a 2/2 split on user/kernel. Kernel rarely needs that amount. Vista and later (and can be set on earlier) use a default 3/1G for user/kernel.
32bit can address 4G ram (assuming no PAE, which desktop style boards are unlikely to support). On a modern system, video window, roms, device memory maps, acpi tables and so on take between 500-800Mb, leaving a maximum of between 3.2 and 3.5G of your 4G ram usable. Which is precisely why its not worth fitting more than 3G RAM to a 32bit Windows - those companies proudly annoucing 4G ram installed on their systems, thats eith their technians are stupid, or pure 'big number' marketing.
64bit can obviously address more. However, 64bit OS and apps use the memory less efficiently (space wise), so otherwise identical 32 and 64 bit systems, the 64bit will use noticibly more memory to run. So a 4G 64bit system isn't really much better than a 32bit 3G system. Obviously, if you're gonna plough in 8G or so, 64bit makes sense (assuming your drivers are available).
Completely aside, I have a nice i7 based Xeon server in my living room (much to Mrs TheBoy's annoyance) that takes up to 72Gb per physical processor, and it takes up to 2 processors. Wonder if its owner would notice if I swapped it for the OOF server ::)

With more than 4 gb physical ram 64 bit Win7 is the way to go , I think (although 64 bit xp can adress 128 GB) .. 32 bit op.systems are on the market for a very long time and need to take their places in history..

I will probably only fit 4GB for now, in the past when I have fitted 4 Dimms I have allways noticed a severe heat increase which has led to odd stability problems, even with the beilt in heat shields I dont think they fair much better as they seem only to there for show purposes.
I also have one of those tripple fan arrays supplied by one of the memory companys which adds noise and to a degree could be picking up dust and blowing it on to the memory.
Will have some fun playing and testing, going to borrow a temperature probe off my brother and do some testing.
Just need to go and find some software to put the system under load and test it. I have the sisoft sandra cd to test with but thats peobably out of date now, plus I have some other 3D test progs tucked away some where I just cant remember what they are called. :-[

Dont get hung up on benchmarks - they mean jack. Thats a trap some of the better pc mags (such as PC Plus) fell in whilst doing reviews, leading to no end of 'recommend' junk. Anyone can may a PC that does outstandingly well at a defined benchmark suite, but is slow in real life ;)
Obviously, if the benchmarks are purely for penile length boasting, thats a different matter ;)

I agree, I just want to see what difference it made between different memory brands.
As for boasting about Penile lenth..... I dont know where the magnifying glass and tweezers are so I cant really comment.
