Title: Train or car journey (costing £1000)
Post by: Tonka. on 03 November 2009, 17:54:54
To travel from Newquay, in Cornwall to Kyle of Lochalsh, in the Scottish Highlands would take approximately 12hrs by car (miggy V6) and cost around £120 in petrol I think.

Check the route here http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&tab=wl

A long old journey, so why not take the train.................. :y

The cost might put you off though http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8340561.stm

Here is the proof http://www.thetrainline.com/buytickets/Default.aspx?base  :o

Also the train takes 28.5 hrs  :-?

I'd still take the car, but 12 hrs might be a bit optimistic! IIRC it took us the best part of 8 hrs from here up to the Highlands. And it's taken us 10 hrs in the past to get to DaveDNDs' Stomping ground!!! :o  :o

Had to collect a car from Glasgow-ended up flying as cheaper than the train.  How stupid is that?
Especially when the government spend ten times (per passenger mile travelled) more on rail than roads  >:(

Lovely flight though-and took 5 hours less.... :y

"Let the train take the strain,"b0lloks. They keep banging on about using public transport, until they come up with clean, safe, reliable and reasonably priced services I'll stick to my motor.

That's a distance of 707 miles, and I'm afraid you ain't covering that in 12 hours unless you drive flat out at every oppertunity for the entire journey.

You'll make the £120 in petrol (just about), but only if you drive like Miss Daisy for the entire journey.

Whilst the A82 and A87 are cracking roads, I would not plan a journey along them using speeds/times reflected from other roads further south.

Not a lot of dual carriageway.  Indeed, some parts are single track with passing places! Ok, perhaps not, but the sheep on the road certainly encourage you to keep the speed down......

totally agree
a lot of roads in the highlands are marked as A roads and are indeed single track roads with passing places

The train journey to Kyle of Lochalsh was featured on Michael Palin's Great Train Journeys of the World.

High acclaim indeed.

Something else that always seems to get overlooked on the car V's train debate is nose pickability!!!!!!

I would personally find it very wrong to sit in front of anyone on a train and have a good old rummage up there, but in a car I can rummage till my heart (and nose) are content!!!!! ::) ::) ::) ;D :D :y

on a train too you always have to sit next to other people and listen to the crap they talk about, usually on the phone. Who's had it off with who, what 'ya doin'

Peace and quite in the car with the cruise control set at 90 70  8-)

A couple of years ago I did from Northwich to Uig on Skye as I had some work to do on North Uist. I set off a 11pm to get the 9am ferry and arrived in Uig at 8am. I will never forget the trip because it was in my wifes Rover 25 diesel, I couldn't stand up straight for a week ;D

I investigated transport costs to/from Scotland/Essex in February.  It was hilarious.

Had a wedding in East Kilbride and wanted to show the missus what Scotland was like in the winter afterwards.

Ended up using EasyJet from Stansted for about £50 each way and hiring a Focus (turned out to be a diesel Picasso) and doing 1250 miles round the coast.

Looked at train or plane back from Inverness as I thought it was a big place, and might have had to visit France to arrive at London City Airport!  Train journey times and costs were obscene.

Scenery up there was FANTASTIC and snow ploughs were the ones to avoid! :y

Only if you drive like a girl.
Start flooring it (in order to do the journey in 12 hours) and you won't be getting anywhere near what Vx claim in MPG.

12 hours is more than optimistic The road from Fort William to the Kyle is the longest 45 miles anywhere it takes forever but don't you just love Scotland's scenery  :) :) :) :) :) :)
