Title: Torque Wrenches - Need Recommendations
Post by: Markie on 14 March 2007, 13:19:45
Got a cracking torque wrench - well obviously its not  >:( as its for the top end of the scale (20nm upwards)

I'm sure there was a thread recently on here re this but cant find it... :(

I need to get a companion for my Draper Beastie, to do the lower level stuff ( 5 - 25nm)

Anyone bought a wrench recently thats recommended in this area?

Prefer to buy online as i dont get out much  :o and dont want to spend a fortune ......

Cheers

My local autoshop (Link Motorsport, Cheadle Hulme) did me a cheap-ish (LaSer I think) Vernier down to that range - needed it for bits of rocker covers....

Hope this helps,
Edwin

I asked the question on a thread, do Norbar still make wrences?  Can't see them anywhere.. I agree with Mark, Sealey are about the best at the moment for the D.I.Yer or semi pro..

Machine Mart sell Sealey on the shelf..

You really need a minimum of 3 torque wrenches to cover the Omega...

Here are some typical torque settings:

8Nm - Camcovers, ABS/Crank/Cam sensors
15Nm - Oil filter and sump plug on newer models
25Nm - Spark plugs
20-60Nm - Misc
110Nm - Road Wheels
300Nm - Rear hub
320Nm - Fron hub

The cheapest way I worked-out to cover all of this is:

Sealey Torque Wrench 1/4”Sq Drive 5-25Nm STW101 - £25.33 (+delivery)
http://www.toolsnstuff.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=6072
(thanks Mark DTM for this one)

(non-branded) Torque Wrench 1/2"Sq Drive 28-210Nm - £12.49 (+delivery)
Comes with 3/8" adaptor and 5" extension bar
http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/pro.jsp?cId=102090&ts=55993&id=18289
(Machine Mart also have a similar item for a similar price)

Draper Torque Wrench 3/4"Sq Drive 70-395Nm 3005A 34964 - £58.26 (free delivery)
http://www.atsite.co.uk/showproduct.aspx?ProductID=5600

Yes, it does leave a gap in the 26-27Nm range, but I happen to have a fourth older 10Nm-80Nm wrench... at any rate I don't know of any 26Nm or 27Nm bolts on the omega.

Hope this helps....

Thanks Mark - yep this is a real help  :y

My current "main" torque is a draper and im pretty sure its a 20 - 140nm so covers most parts.....i think i will go with the one you and Mark DTM recommend for lower end (the sealey 1/4")

And cross the hub issue when i come to it  ;)

Norbar still seem to be alive and kicking,  http://www.norbar.com/welcome.php?language=en&location=uk I have had one of their mechanics wrenches, 30Nm - 150Nm for many years, just hope its still working correctly :y
