Title: Could do with computer boffin help please !!!!
Post by: SJKOO01 on 20 November 2009, 22:29:30
Can anyone help / advise me please on a weird computer problem I'm having.  :-[

I'm not any expert by any means, so please don't explain too techy with advise please !  :-?

All was well yesterday, but today when I went to plug my external hard drive, (also tried memory stick) in the usb ports, the damn computer goes into rebooting mode continously, till I unplug them, and once I do, all is well again and my pc works fine ?.

I've tried System Restore, uninstalling the usb drivers, couple of other things, but of no use ?.

What I can't understand is that I've got a usb scanner, and couple of other usb items in the usb ports, yet the computers fine with those items plugged in ??.

Never had this type of problem before, so completely stumpped ??  :-? .

Any suggestions anyone ?.

Regards,
A depressed user  :-/  !!

Snap diagnosis (so may not be up to much ::))

Sounds like a power supply problem to me.

Have you tried unplugging the other USB components to reduce the load on the power supply?

 :-?

* try disabling wake up function for usb devices from your bios..

* if that doesnt work, try disabling all usb ports and see if it happens again when you insert any usb devices..if happens also this time your problem is on mobo..

* also using multiple usb devices on some mobos can cause some hardware failures try some usb pci card

ps: try to simplify the scenario at first..

had a similar issue turned out the usb drive connection was shot, I cracked open the case and plugged the drive straight into the motherboard problem sorted after that :y

Thanks to those of you making all suggestions, and what to try & look for.

Here's the weired thing, last night last thing I decided to have one more crack at trying to solve the problem,  I decided to do a google search, surprised to find that I wasn't the only one with the problem !.

Anyhow, wasn't a hardware problem as all other usb items worked no problem, and leads / plugs in good nick, nothing broken.  So I thought I've got nothing to lose, I'll try one more restore point again.  Hey presto, computer boots up no problem, plug in the said external hard drive, and memory stick and they work fine now ????.  Not complaining as all seams to be fine now, but strange how the usb ports suddenly stopped working ?!.

So I'm happy to not have lost any files at the end of the day.

Thanks once again to those who answered, much appreciated  :y

meaning related registry entries or related files were corrupt and it was trying to install drivers over and over ..
