Title: School closures.
Post by: STMO999 on 06 January 2010, 12:59:46
My missus got up, as usual, at 6am this morning. I got up with her to prepare her car for the journey from Wakefield to Sheffield, where she is the head of a large primary. She left at 6:45 and arrived at 7:30 to open the school.
I walked the half a mile to my sons school at 8:30 only to be told that the staff were unable to make the journey in and, therefore the school was closed. Oh, and tomorrow as well.

Between this and the taxis I mentioned in an earlier thread, I am in a bad mood today. I am ashamed of the way the people of this country take every opportunity to skive or make a quick buck.

Alledgedly, around these parts, the school teachers/assistants have 'snow days' - a set number of days a year they dont have to turn up if the weather is poor.

FFS.

My SWTSMBO got a text at 0800 saying the school would be closed and not to go in. Seems 14 out of 16 "full time" teachers (my SWTSMBO is only a teaching assistant) live "out in the sticks" and cannot get in so the school closes even though the council clear the roads and paths to maintain access to the school.

Now that is what I call joined up thinking ........   NOT ....  :(

Colleagues less than 5 miles from work today have been "unable" to come in due to the weather, yet I managed to come in from over 70 miles away.

Absolutely pathetic.

5m is walking distance if reqd!!  I used to go to school 5m away, and often had to make my own way there/back - including through the bad winters of late 70s and early 80s

only one of ours is still at school....  but the school is at the top of a rather steep , and large hill....    which the council have NOT cleared,   The bus service up there is suspended....  given that we have a genuine , measured with a ruler, 11 inches of snow in our front garden....  even if the school were open i'd not be inclined to drive the 8.5 miles or so to try and get there....  all things considered...

hell there's 6 inches sat on the roof of my miggy....  AFTER i'd managed to get out to tesco in it earlier...   took 1/2 an hour of shoveling snow to get a clear run on to the road ....   and when i got back, there was another 3 inches of it.....

bugger that.....

in my defense....  i know what it's like out there......   last night as it was coming down i had to pick the lad uo from watlington....  our eldest from marston...  and get to sainsbury for supplies...

i'm f***ed if i'm gonna try getting up elms rise/cumnor hill  , the youngest goes to matthew arnold...  and it's heavier on the west side than it is here on the south....

so i've got enough beer and wine to last  me a week or so....  and food for 2 weeks...  or so...

Miggy is out front , and will almost certainly need digging out again if i really HAVE to go somewhere...
thank god the next 2 days is relatively clear....  but when it all freezes solid tonight  it's gonna get scary...

Its still a proposal at this stage, however, it won't be passed because, as per usual, Northamptonshire haven't gone through the proper proceedures and have contaviened EU law...

I've had a pair from them for 6 years ...  live in the garage 95% of the time .. but presently in the boot .. :)

Takes less then 5 minutes to fit, drive off the estate, into the bus stop, 5 minutes to remove .... continue on the cleared roads.

Works a dream .. :)

Problem with snow and schools is the dreaded "health and safety" brigade and no win no fee lawyers.

Years ago if a kid fell down and broke an arm there would be no problem. Now with the compensation culture schools can be shafted for thousands >:(

Take 5k a year off the teachers wages and tell them they can have it back as a bonus at the end of the year if they have full attendance, bet they turn up then. The LEA should then supply every teacher with a spade so should it snow they can all get outside and clear the paths, simples :)

I asked swmbo (Cover Supervisor) why is it that teachers can give up trying toget into work but expect everyone else to be at their place of work, the 'Look' I got..... :-X

That said it is pretty bad at the moment, had to think twice myself today but went in, colleague in neighbouring village rang in saying they could not get in, I drive right past her village and used the same roads..... :D :D :D

I still don't know if there'll be a bus service to get me in to work ... they "haven't got the information to make a decision yet" ... and the Government want us to use public transport !!!  Might have to stick the chains on to get out of the estate and onto main roads .. :(

Tomorrow i'll take the Beastie to work then take the truck wherever it has to go, then back to the yard, then drive the Beastie home again.
I do this every working day every year regardless. Been doing it for years all over the country. Some of us just get on with it. If i can go where i need to in an artic, hundreds of miles a day regardless then folk can drive/walk/wade to a cozy school/office etc. No excuses. Sorry but i've heard enough whimpering excuses. Unless you live somewhere REALLY extreme make the effort. The rest of us do. ::)

I remember walking 3 miles through snow drifts, bus then a mile at the other end. Was an hour late and got detention for being late. Had to repeat the process to get home. Never missed a days schooling despite living in the sticks.

Thankfully I am not the PM as, apart from making sure the schools stayed open during bad weather, I would also introduce longer opening hours so that parents could drop off and pick up more flexibly to suit their work and to reduce the school run traffic jams.

TBH I would rather have had a fwd over this last week as the miggy has been next to useless and near lethal at times!

On the subject of getting to work I asked my team to try their best and take their time and am happy that 90% have made it in ok. We run the drug team in a big health center and most other dep'ts are shut such as physio, blood clinic etc. Personally my conscience wouldn't let me sag off!!

I concur 100% :y

I am lucky enough to have the option to work from home, and so in this weather, happily make use of that perk.  Saves a shitload on petrol No point taking the risk if its not really necessary, esp as the office will be empty, as every other bugger will be at home.

Exactly.

Mind you, went for a stroll yesterday, when it was still snowing heavily (and windy), probably only walked a mile or so.  Being the peak of fitness, as I am, found I was knackered having to keep lifting my feet right up out of snow to walk - almost stomping along in effect.

Also knackered pushing all them cars.

I need to exercise more I think ;D

Mind you, went for a stroll yesterday, when it was still snowing heavily (and windy), probably only walked a mile or so.  Being the peak of fitness, as I am, found I was knackered having to keep lifting my feet right up out of snow to walk - almost stomping along in effect.

Also knackered pushing all them cars.

I need to exercise more I think ;D

I know what you mean. Went for a stroll yesterday to the shops in the vain hope that the shelves had not been stripped bare (wrong!) and walked Mrs. KW to work this morning with a heavy rucksack full of her files and stuff. Must be little over 1/2 a mile each way but it was so tiring I had to stop at the chip shop on the way back because I ran out of calories. ::)

Drive, and an Omega-shaped snow drift are still out there staring at me.

Problem with snow and schools is the dreaded "health and safety" brigade and no win no fee lawyers.

Years ago if a kid fell down and broke an arm there would be no problem. Now with the compensation culture schools can be shafted for thousands >:(

Just catching up on this thread and have to agree.

The Head of the council nursery where my other half normally works has decided that, as the access road is icebound and likely to be so for the forseavble future due to the weather, incline and general lack of salt/grit in the area, it will remain closed as emergency service vehicles would be unable to access the building in case of an emergency.

With my sensible head on, I have to agree....

thats not the British spirit  :'(

I have to agree there probably is a slightly increased risk involved, but if schools shut, parents have to stay at home, and the country has to stop...

I've been led to understand that the local Police have eaten all the chips in a 10 mile radius! :o

I just love all the "in my day" talk about going to school in the snow! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D  All it needs is comments about "no shoes.......no socks or stockings........without even a breakest......not even a bowel of gruel"!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Well I remember twice getting on a 1950s coach in Haslemere in Surrey during 1964 / 65.......... and walking back two miles, filled with glee, when it failed to get through the snow to go to our Midhurst school! 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-)

Then, like now, it is good for life events to result in a day or two off from school for children. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;)

My family give me the evil look now when I say 'when I was a lad' or 'when I was your age' but it is true, we got on with it..... :D :D :D
