I think I passed my test in 1967, and I seem to remember I used to pay 3/11 per gallon, but the AA chart says it hasn't been that price since I was 5. Must have been 4/11.
I wonder if the other AA has an equivalent chart for beer prices, 'cos I can't remember how much a pint cost either :)

Sounds like a markets trader I once saw in Ingoldmells selling towels etc, he said he only made pennies on an item.
Then drove out of the market in a stunning Brown Interceptor and a stunning blond by his side.

Used to live next door to an airline pilot who drove one of those. Different stunning blonde every time I saw him.
He once got stopped by a smart*rse traffic cop on the way to the airport. The copper started off "Look 'ere, son, only racing drivers and pilots can go that fast".
My neighbour pointed to his uniform lying on the back seat... :) :) :)

76p per gallon in 78, rising massively (by comparison) to 98p per gallon in 79.
By the time I got road legal on my FS1E in 81, it was £1.60 per gallon, and it was only 4p per gallon more expensive when I passed both bike & car tests in 82.
From then on it was a slow but steady rise to almost £2 per gallon by 85, then it nosedives for a bit back to £1.70 per gallon by 87.
Since then it has simply risen by both proportionate (on occasions) and disproportionate (more often than not) amounts.

My Garelli Rekord had a massive 6.2 bhp :D :D.....used to leave the local Fizzy and AP50 boys for dead....with only 4 BHP or so. :y :y :y ;)

Haven't got a clue what mine was making at the back wheel, but it did reach an indicated 71mph down the "mile" one saturday night....just before it holed the piston.

I have been trying to remember and £1.70 odd came to mind which would have been a gallon then I suppose. I passed my car & bike test in 1988 (when Rick Astley was King :y)

Oh... but so worth it just to hear the sound, also the smell of sikalene oil... those were the days :)

I don't remember the prices but i had a mini cooper 998 (yes they did make them) red with a black roof & i could fill it up on friday payday for £6. It only had a single tank & it was'nt an "S" (1275 only) but it had the 100mph speedo as oppose to 90, chrome remote gear lever & i got my ins. cancelled as i declared it a standard Mini 1000.
The irony is the reg. was OOF ***G, 786 i think!!!! :D

When I was first went on the road legally on my moped in Oct 1975 petrol was approx 55p per gallon and the moped did almost 120mpg. I was working in a filling station in 1979 when it crossed the £1.00 per gallon threshold,it caused chaos as the pumps werent set up to deal with higher than 99.99 per gallon.
It has now got to the point where I can see myself driving a little diesel Corsa or similar within the year. Petrol money is taking a large percentage of my income and Im sick to the back teeth of it.
The only possible way of bringing it back down would be for everyone to use a LOT less of it so the treasury and oil companies were taking a lot less revenue and would have to let market forces take effect, it will never happen in this country though.

.....no separate two stroke tank on the Garelli.....just put the two stroke oil... in in the petrol tank......and shake..........Those AP50 boys had it too easy. :y :y :y

Same with my Vespa and Lambretta. I used to love the smell of Rock Oil. I passed my bike test in 82 and my car in 83 but can't remember how much petrol was in them days
-
Passed my test in 1971 and price was around £0.35 per gallon. Now we pay over 3 times that for a litre!! >:(
-
When I passed my test I got 4 gallons to a £. Today I have just filled up the Mig ( petrol light was on) £67. I don't know what's more expensive ALE or going to fetch it. :(
In response to an earlier post I had a Mini Cooper with a Stage 2 Head, Flat Top Pistons, I skimmed the Head , and Block, iirc the compression was 13:1, and it only ran on 5* fully retarded like **** of a shovel, mind you it kept burning out valves!!.
Decimalisation Feb 1971, and I still reckon we were conned, I went to bed with 240 pennies to a £, and woke up with a hundred. ::)

......in order for the the general population to become familiar with the new money........I well remember items priced in both pounds and shillings.....and pounds and new pence.......e.g....50p....and 10/- (Ten shillings).......My parents had some elderly friends .....who lived in Yorkshire...........they used to say........"this new money is fine for London types.....but it will never catch on up here" ;D ;D ;D. :y :y
-
Used to work at a filling station, I seem to remember early 70's it was around 35p per gallon.
Dreaded the Jag's coming in winter and saying fill her up..........both tanks!
My hands were absolutely frozen to the b****y trigger. Hate to think how much to fill one of them now :o :o :o

No....Groats ;) ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D :y

Yep about 6/6d in 1970 :y :y
A gallon of cheap S.G.Smith (Downham) oil was also 10/-, and my car needed a gallon every 10 gallons of 4-star!
But it is all relative, and Page 18 of this fascinating statictical official document says it all:

8-) 8-) ;)
