Any battery can short out, and as a single AA battery can easily supply in excess of 1A in a short circuit surge - I'm not surprised things got warm ;D

Some Duracells have a 'test strip' on the side.
If you press it I think it uses battery power to heat up a temperature sensitive strip down the side.
Could your small change have pressed the test strip?
-
Of course, you sh!ttin yourself probably didn't help. ;D
Did you suddenly remember all those silly stories about spontaneous combustion? ;D

The test strip requires a small degree of concerted effort to activate, and certainly doesn't produce noticeable heat.

A little related,
I use a radio scanner (AOR8000) and my mains lead is bust, and AOR in Derby are out of stock for a few weeks.
So I bought myself some rechargeables in Tesco along with 4 AA batteries, now then, this is the tricky bit, 4 X AA Duracell fit nicely in the battery compartment and re-attach battery cover, yet when I put in the re-chargeables, they keep popping out and I cannot for the life of me get the cover back on, so I am assuming that the Tesco batteries must be FATTER, they are 2900mAh, so is this why they do not fit?

Easy.......You've picked up C cells ::) :P ;D ;D ;D
Seriously though... I've never noticed any problems with rechargeables :y :y

C CELLS?
And they work perfect, but cannot get the cover on.

I have noticed that some cheaper rechargeables have a thick plastic sleeve around them for some reason ... this makes them hard to fit in certain devices ....

The next size up from AA... Fat ones which wouldn't fit :D :D :D
Sorry... Was my odd sense of humour :-[ :-[
