Title: Yeh or nay to this?
Post by: cam2502 on 02 February 2010, 23:11:36
Pal of mine is buying a car roughly 70 miles from home on thursday. can he drive it back without insurance? He cant get it insured before that as his credit card wont have the funds in til friday, and picking the car up then isnt an option.
There isnt an option of anyone else driving the car for him. the car has mot, just wondering that if he can prove it has just been bought what would plod say if he was stopped?

There is no legal excuse for not having insurance,it's the law.If he gets stopped it's points and a fine.Sorry to be the bringer of bad news.If however the vehicle is on the road but being towed it does not need to be insured if you put the pulling vehicles number plate on a trailer board with appropriate lights/indicators as it is classed as part of the prime mover.Hope that helps.

It's a no-brainer Cam - really, and would simply result in 'plod' as you so quaintly put it asking him if he 'wished to say anything'

Sorry but absolutely not. Its not about what plod would say, but the position it puts an innocent party in a potential road accident who would have no financial redress in court.

A big noooo!
It's the risk factor, I in no way suggest he's not a good driver, but if there were to be an accident he'd be in trouble...and some. Someone might crash into him, not his fault at all, could be an ANPR van about, could be police about. There is no legal arguement for having no insurance. Day insurance could be an option?
There is no way he can drive it un insured, the risk is too great and not worth it.
If he's over 25, day insurance would be what I'd do...only a £10 or so and he's covered.

Unless, he has fully comp with permision to drive another car, the seller still has the car insured and agrees to put the following days date on the documents. A big if, but that is the only way..... :)

For the sake of one day, is the risk worth it, he gets pulled by plod, or worse has an accident then he will kick his self.

NOT WORTH THE RISK.

If the vehicle is being towed on its' own 4 wheels it needs to be taxed, insured and tested. It needs to be towed on a trailer to be legal.

Thanks Kevin I have just re-read what I was trying to say in that towed should also read on a trailer, hence trailer numberplate board with lights and indicators (I'm a bit slow tonight) :y

If he's currently fully comp on his car, he's covered 3rd party on another car as long as he doesn't own it, I THINK! No insurance is a big no and the police don't listen to excuses. I was done for no insurance, as i didn't know my direct debit bounced, years ago, they impounded my car (expensive!) and i got points and a hefty fine!

Anpr  in plod car will flash up "uninsured" - car will be seized.
Dayinsure - less than £15 for the day. ;)
