Title: Trolley jack, ramps, axle stands?
Post by: joshwyatt on 03 February 2010, 20:26:29
I'm looking of for a bit of advice please?
I'm not sure what I need out of the above, or maybe something different all together I hadn't thought of.
Need something to enable access for inspection, or work to be done underneath vehicles. Ideally would need to cope with maximum of 3.5 tons.
I had a look on ebay and found...
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-3-5-Ton-Workshop-Trolley-Jack_W0QQitemZ150410155321QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Lifting_Moving_Equipment?hash=item230524d539

Not sure how useful that would be?
Ideally I'd prefer ramps, as I think they may be easier, and then use axle stands to support the vehicle, or jack then axle stands to inspect with wheels of etc.
So, please forgive my ignorance, I've never needed them before and I'm not too sure what I need. All I know is it must cope with up to the weight of a Transit i.e 3.5 tons.
I appreciate all and any input  :y

Be aware that some vehicles have to be reversed up ramps as the front will get damaged due to the over hang if they are driven on forward. The Omega is prone to this. You can over come this by making/getting/stealing some metal to make the gradient shallower.I hope that helps.

Personally i'd have all three (& do), Axle Stands, Jack & Ramps. You won't be able to remove the wheels with ramps though, but they're easy to use for oil changes etc.

For the amount of cars you seem to be moving, if you have premises then I would consider a 4 post ramp.

Ramps are ok for DIY, and occasional jobs where access is required but as allready mentioned, a lot of work may require reversing a car on ramps as well as driving on, they have to be held in place to stop them slipping (Rather risky for all concerned and personally I would not use for commercials.

If you have to use ramps then drill some holes in the ground and fit some rawlbolts to hold them in place for added safety.

that jack is bl00dy expensive  :o

I got a similar one for £65 from Cosco, axle stands make sure the load point is wide, machine mart ones are not big enough, and tend to dig into the chassis.

Josh, i am not due into work again until Sunday. I have ramps, various axel stands, various tools here, your welcome to pop over and see whats what  :y

Also have a halfords trade card you can borrow which gives healthy discount on tools such as torque wrenches  :y

You also welcome to pop over when you need to get a car on the ramps, i work 3 days on 3 days off, so quite often about   :)

Agree with all the above, and would add that a "high lift" jack is also a good idea .. I wish I'd spent that little extra ... :(

Omega's sit fairly low and I find that to get a decent height clearance I have to jack in two stages, putting blocks under the jack the second time.

'Tis a pain ....  :(

Ideally a 4 or 2 post lift would be great, however, I operate from home. The pictures of my vehicles for sale show a fairly large gravelled area, that's all I've got  ;D No inside work space for vehicles, and being gravel it's not the best surface. If I had premises I would definitely consider a proper lift.
The car selling thing is not what I had initally planned for, I was only going to be selling Omega's I bought, maybe 2 a month. I do have trade insurance and trade plates, and do it all properly. But things changed, my mother and father got divorced, so our house was then up for sale. I said to my mother; take out an additional mortgage give it to me I'll buy and sell cars so we can pay him off and not lose the house. That's why I've got a £20,000 RR  ;D
No way I could afford it myself, all Omega's I sell are my own, but everything else normally is on behalf of the household so that's why I work from home. It's going better than I had anticipated, but there's no way I could get premises. So I sort of have a mismatched way of doing things, a fair bit of capital but no premises. I know the value of certain vehicles inside out, but working on them is a different matter. That's all done on my behalf by other people...but thanks to people like Tunnie and James I'm able to understand how things work and get them done at a very good price.

Got a jack and axle stands, but I`ve also got some home-fabricated ramps; so much more convenient than jacking and blocking when engine servicing. :y

Don`t skimp on quality.....when things go pear-shaped with jack/stands/ramps; you get VERY little warning.......a couple of years ago, my neighbour`s brother was killed outright whilst servicing his car, which was supported on a jack and a single axle-stand: the car slipped off the former, toppling the latter. :'(

By far the best advise yet.  That goes for when you buy a compressor as well, go for a good one with as big a reciever that you can get away with.

I am never too happy being under a car at first, usually takes me a while to get used to it.

As extra security, i usually leave the jack underneath, slightly released, if a wheel is off, slide that under the car too.

I always put stands on the chassis, so should not move, don't put them on the front cross bar, too slippery

Its going to sink in, and be nasty working under there. A well known admin steals borrows my garage when weather is bad, its not a problem for another customer  :y

It's going in tomorrow to be fixed, at my expense...circa £600. Not best pleased, but the insurance are faffing around and I just can't wait any longer. His insurance company are saying it might be his fault, but the lack of witnesses don't help. I bet it'll take a long time before I see any money, but I'm fortunate I'm in a position to have it fixed.
But that's life, be glad to get rid of the bloody thing  ;D Anyone want a 2005 Range Rover for £50?

If you're limited  to working on gravel I would say a set of ramps would be the tool of choice for everything except jobs that require wheels off, TBH.  They'll be much safer than axle stands.
