Title: What's the point of...
Post by: jereboam on 07 February 2010, 12:10:24
"sub-machine guns"?  Or whatever they're called.

Everybody knows that a "good guy" with a hand gun taking single shots can slaughter an unlimited number of "baddies" with automatic weapons, so why do they bother?

That's a very interesting question J and one only those of us who have had occasion to resort to their use could answer with any degree of insight.

To do so in a detailed way on a public forum however would be frowned upon, but in general, this type of weapon affords the shooter the opportunity to lay down a concentration, rapidity and arc of fire that helps to suppress the threat.

Working from the principle of when one takes fire, one should establish cover, assess the threat and return fire with the aim of eradicating or stemming that threat.

Only when one has experienced such circumstances can one understand and be thankful for the very important role this particular type of weapon plays.

In make believe however there does seem to be a plethora of those - when taking fire - whose shooting skills with a handgun, seems to be mightily impressive.

That changes Herc when in a fire-fight with a determined enemy, concentration and rapidity of fire has saved the day on more than one occasion.

I'd like to point out that I watched a really cr*p film last night.

I've successfully managed to avoid contact with firearms, the military and organised criminals throughout my life.  But, on the whole, if ever I was to be involved in such things, I think I'd prefer to have hold of a multi-round rapid-fire weapon requiring a somewhat less elevated level of skill to cut an opponent in half than is required in pistol shooting. :)

Anyway, I'm a "goody", so it would work effectively, wouldn't it?

Automatic weapons, unless turret or system mounted, are generally fired in 3-4 round bursts at aimed targets.  This allows several shots to be fired at one target in case one misses and supresses the area.  It is a very effective weapon and has a very prominent place on the battle field.  As does the bayonet ;-)

There's also the point that no matter how good a shot you are, you ain't going to put your head up and take aim, when you can hear lots of shots whistling about overhead. They may not be aimed very well, but there is always the chance one has your number on it.  :-X

Indeed a case in point S.  Fighting in circumstances where firearms are used is never a pleasant or rewarding experience and is best avoided where at all possible.

The entire emphasis, in unplanned contacts at least, is generally centred on the need to survive in rapidly unfolding circumstances.  The most effective way to do this is to either find a way out or hurt the enemy before they hurt you.

Short sharp 'positive' bursts of fire are the order of the day in order to suppress the enemy and win the fire fight(not as easy as it seems and not worth wanting to do as an every day task)

;) You and your professional comrades have my complete admiration and appreciation......being shot at and shooting at others is one thing: but 'hand to hand' combat seems many levels above that in courageousness. :y
