Let's set 2 scenario's...
1. You go to the supermarket, do your shopping and get an extra £10 in your change... Do you declare it or pocket it and walk away?
2. The same situation occurs, but in a small local shop... What do you do?
-
The same both times, I always come clean and give it back. I always check my change so I have never once been ripped off that way either :y
-
As you might expect, I'd take it home every time from the supermarket but I'd give it back to a small shop. Always check my change from both :y

I must admit, I genuinely hardly ever check change.
So what happens when you leave the store, and some hours later discover you've been given too much?
You can't take it back, 'cos the notice says "mistakes cannot be rectified after you've left the till" ;D
As it happens - last night I was crossing severn bridge.
I handed the guy a tenner. Unbeknown to me, I gave him two £10's which were together, instead of one. He had the decency to tell me and give it back, I was very pleased :y

Lets add to this one.
"Please check your change before leaving the store, as mistakes CANNOT be rectified afterwards"
Works both ways.

Always give it back. In the first scenario, you may think that your merely skimming a bit off the already-wealthy company but, in reality, many staff have to pay out of their own pockets for till errors. Therefore you are effectively stealing from someone who probably only earns the minimum wage.

True... But let's say you do notice you've got too much change :y

As the supermarket will rectify short changing (or in my experience they have) I would return the money to them, but most local shops by me have clear signs stating that you need to check your change before leaving the shop and will not give you your short change then they can go stuff themselves as in my eyes it works both ways, It took me 0.01 seconds to decide this answer. With this said I am not a dishonest person just they made there bed so lay in it as that's how they will see it with the shoe on other foot.

Not in the big ones. They start investigations after a certain line has been crossed

Either way, to me it's immoral. It's not your money, so what gives you the right to pocket it?

I would have no qualms about keeping the dosh in all scenarios, after all, shoplifting is basically legal now.
However in a society controlled by me everyone would always return any monies found and a majority of shoplifters would find themselves being executed!

What, even the young fit and buxom blondes. ::)

They would be a minority and hence spared!,though would probably need to be held in captivity and given an opportunity to redress their transgressions!

A few years ago i asked for a tenner cash back at a very large supermarket chain (the one i hate), the cashier & i were so busy chopsin, we forgot about the cash back. I got home, realized my mistake & made haste back to the supermarket. I was told that i couldn't have my tenner, because i'd already left the shop & how was they to know. I said check her till, they said, we don't do that sir until the end of her shift.
In the end of kicking quite a fuss infront of many customers they backed down & gave me a ten pound voucher. I didn't get what i originally wanted, but i had my tenner.
KEEP IT just for being awkward arses :y
