Title: Went to look at this car today

It is even cleaner than the add suggests, timing just a little wrong for me at the moment........... :(
I have had two before, so I know what they are like.... :)

You need a football field to turn them around. The most appaling turning circle I've ever come across.  :y

My alarm bells are ringing at the odometer reading......

Cracking cars in their day though.  Managed to peddle one along quite nicely, thank you, back in the day.....   :-X

The cockpit doesn't look particularly inviting compared to a Mig, esp a facelift. I also think the Mig is considerably stronger, thicker metal, so if you hit anything you are more likely to come off still alive.

Ublievable understeer. It would only go straight ahead at a roundabout no matter where the steering was pointed.
I did only have it for a day or 2  :y

They actually drove quite well if you drove to 'the system'....

Loads of other references, go have a rummage under Police Roadcraft....

What makes you think than? the internal and external condition suggest a genuine car, though I felt that the rear archers may have been painted, if they have then a very good job, the colour may have helped in this.

I am not going to buy it, wrong time at the moment, though am tempted because you do not see many clean ones and it is on my door step, about 2 miles from work, found the place by looking at the photos :D :D :D

Had an 89 saloon that I used to part time Mini Cab when I lived in Hertford and up and down the motorway coming home, never let me down and a real flying machine, OK it is front wheel drive.... :)

Fair comment, If I were buying would be investigating the mechanicals anyway. Engines tend to be sound anyway, after the initial valve rattle.... :)

Had 3 of them over the years a 86 saloon 92 hatch and a 97 stirling between them done over 200k miles. They were very reliable. They do feel very dated compared to a mig though.

:-? :o :-?  Modern, reliable, light to drive, faster, better on fuel, fewer and less complicated cam belt changes as spacious and similar price, are you sure.... :D :D :D
Anyway it was not to replace the Mig..... :)

My father ran a couple of these, one a D plate and one an E plate.  Engines were pretty good for the time but the dash was a slab of plastic and the front seats especially were awful for anything other than a short journey.

Then again a quick look on Autotrader shows you can pick up a P plate with reasonable miles for £500...

I believe a cam belt cost. in the region of £800 at a dealers, transverse engine & a balancer shaft belt.

Noooo..... :D Even the Mitsubishi does not cost that much at my independent...... last one on a Rover at a Lada local garage was only about £200, OK about 10 years ago and 90K changes iirc.......... :y

Before BMW took over Rover in the early 90s, Rover had got to grips with rustproofing with the (then) new paint plants at each site.  The 800 was made in Cowley, paint plant went live in 90/91 iirc.  This was one of the technologies that BMW were interested in.

Before this technology though, agreed, they rusted every bit as bad as the Carltons/Senators or the day.

But look at a prefacelift Omega (or similar aged Vectra/Astra etc), and compare it to the same aged Rover, and easy to see Vauxhall were slow to improve in this area.

Always fancied a facelifted 800.  That was going to be the car I got when I bought the MV6.  It was only the shocking build quality of the 800 that put me off them (and Mrs TheBoy was quite keen on the dual heating of the Omega ;D)

As for handling, its whats expected for a FWD, and was OK. Turbo was a bit lairy. Ride not too bad for a mid 80s FWD, but lags way behind the RWD competition.

Yeah, the RWD cars are generally far more comfy.  And that Honda 827 engine wasn't that great (and we know all about the KV6 fitted to later ones ;D - better engine, but with K series problems).  But compare them to the FWD cars of the same period - Scorpio, Mundano, Chavalier (and latterly Vectra) etc, they were a reasonable car (aside from some build issues).  Suffered badly from BMW's lack of investment towards updates and new models (as did all Rovers).

Had a 800 2l SI as a company car when they first came out, it went on the back of an AA truck 5 times in six months. Nice car just unreliable, went back to BMW's.
I went through half a dozen 3 series from 318i up to 325i, they got replaced every year. I was driving 50k a year without so much as a squeak, just regular servicing. :)
Funnily enough I changed companies, and went through 2 Cavalier CD Autos, and three Carltons 2L GL, a 2l CD,and a CDX all autos, without a problem also.
In fact ther only cars I ever had problems with were BL!

We had a 1991 Mk1 Sterling, H779HHP if anyone knows it.....

Beautiful car, 2.7 V6, electric eveything inc reclining rear seats, in two tone (gold over grey)

My first "real" car, and so so comfortable and reliable.

I think they are greatly under-rated cars to be honest.

Very rare these days too, for obvious reasons.....

Had four of these, two diesels(one saloon & one fastback), they run the VM 2.5 & they're cracking motors.
The other two where 2.0's & one being Vitesse Coupe.
The only one to have some rust was the Coupe & that was through neglect from previous owners  :(

My uncle had a Rover 90, and we went all over the country, now that was a car. Chassis built from girders, and a starting handle to break your wrist on. A big leather bench seat at the front ( for your pleasure), Oh and a freewheel drive switch on the dash.
GREAT DAYS, before motorways, drink driving, and traffic wardens etc  :)
