Title: Lucky to be alive
Post by: Gaffers on 26 February 2010, 23:22:18
Just spent the last 7 hours going to Barnstaple to pickup the latest project boat.  About 30 mins from getting home and this car comes up behind right up the chuff of the boat.  So I put my hazards on to try and coax him to give me some more space and he overtakes..........on a solid white line........ and sure enough we go around the corner and theres a car coming the other way too, by this time he is level with me.  We both brake and I move over to the left.....how nobody made contact I do not know.  I honestly thought I was going to die or be seriously hurt.  If it was a lorry he would have been dead at the very least.

Thankfully I memorised the number plate and called it in the rozzers.  He merits a good bollocking off a copper at the very least.  It took me an hour to calm down at least (and several pints)

I caught up with him later on as he was stuck behind a lorry.  I was willing all the lights to turn red so I could go and pull him from the car and give him the kicking he deserves....he was one lucky boy tonight on 2 counts......

In a way I am glad you didnt catch him as you would be the one the was in the wrong if he reported you to the law,

It's sad  and stupid gits like this that dont give a shit and generally get away with and when they do have accidents they walk away unscratched.

Glad you are ok Gaffers, thats the main thing.  Hope the rozzers catch him and he gets his just deserves.

At that point i didn't care.  When I start thinking about my late bro and how he was killed by idiots like him the red mist comes down.  That kid is very very lucky there were no reds  >:(

I don't wish to stir, but is putting your hazards on the best way of giving your intended message (i.e.stay back)? I have generally found that large vehicles stick their hazards on to say "I'm stopping here" (especially delivery drivers about to double park). Had I been following, I may well have thought the hazards meant you were stopping and would have been concerned that once I had started to go round you, your speed was not diminishing.  :-/

That said, I have no time at all for tailgaters.  >:(

I was not hanging around myself nor slowing down.... I usually give them a blast of the fogs but i dont have them on my tailboard.  Even if thats what he genuinely thought he still did the most idiotic thing and overtook on a blind bend with a solid white....its going through mind and I still dont know how no one died.....

I would have hoped he would be cautioned for dangerous driving - but will probably meet his "maker" in the future...or some other poor devil :-?

glad you are ok..

as I stated in some older threads, never go down from your car, take the license plate and call police..

scenario 1 the driver can be armed

scenario 2 you will hit and break his nose..

in both probabilites you will go extra trouble.. :-/

Agreed there were some knobs on the road last night... however - I'd like to think I didn't get into a clash..
.
... few years ago, I openly admit, I really did used to get wound up over it...

...now I have become surprisingly good at pulling over and lettin' 'em clear off  :y

By the way - if someone is a genuine, serious danger - don't ever hesitate to call it in (if safe to do so  :P :P ), observations will always go out for the muppet  :y

As I have said in James' thread. Teach roadcraft to anyone who wants a licence :y

Driving instruction now has become more about teaching the test routes, rather than teaching how to read the roads.

There is a very good reason as to why the majority of drivers killed on the roads are young, they are taught to drive in a nice quiet generally small (1.0 - 1.5) car. They go out buy their cars and go tearing off out with their mates, driving roads that they have never driven along, with distractions of their music blaring out so loud the car vibrates, and "friends" messing about at all times of day and night....  Then they wonder why they hit whatever "jumped out" at them.  >:( >:( >:(

The other type of person who is the accident causer, the I am in too much of a rush to drive with consideration of other road users...  Who by definition drive with their foot hard to the floor, overtake to gain 20 feet in a stream of heavy traffic, generally the tailgaters (which imho is far more dangerous than speeding)....
