My old PC has finally given up the ghost, bit of a dissapointment but oh well never mind, i was just wondering if i could unplug the hard drive with all my photo's on it and put in my new pc, would it work??

Yes matey it will, chances are yoor old hard drive will be the IDE connector type ande the new one will be the SATA connector type, when purchasing the new PC just emquire and make sure the Motherboard has am IDE connector on board.
In the event your new PC has a hard drive and DVD that are IDE then disconnect the DVD drive , or one of the DVD drives if it has 2 and the hard drive from your old PC can be fiiitted in it's place to get your photo's off.
Any problems when you buy the new PC with connecting the drive then just post back here for help.. When you get your new PC then BACKUP your Photo's immediately to DVD.
You could also consider getting an external IDE caddy and fitting your old hard drive in it , then copy anything you wish to keep on to your new compyer, then you have a copy on the PC, a copy on the External hard drive and a copy on DVD.
This is all possible of course as long as it is not your hard drive that has failed on your old PC.

Wowza that was a fast reply :o thank you so much already got the "new" pc i will hook it up when i get home in the morning and see if they are the same conectors.
But once its pluged in will the "new" pc run the same? ie. start up as normal all will i have to do something to it?? :-/

Should run OK, Only problem it might have is it might try to boot off the old windows setup on the old drive.
If it does then I cant see it being a major problem, Yhen just make a copy of what you wish to keep in a folder with in My Documents on the New computers hard drive or where ever suits,
If not sure on anything that happens then pop back here and ask and someone will help out. :y

If you have to change anything it might only be a jumper setting on your old hard drive, Or setting the DVD drive to a Slave setting if it is an IDE DVD that is fitted.

you may have to change the boot priority in the bios as well

Set your old HDD as a slave drive... that way your PC will boot of the new drive, and allow you to access the files on your old drive as a second HDD in the "My Computer" section

Maplin do a handy USB to IDE/SATA cable that would allow you to copy the stuff across without even opening your new PC. Even comes with a power supply to power the drive. :y

Not all mother boards allow you to boot from a specific hard drive. :-/

If you run your old HD with the old OS on it as a Slave or via a USB caddy, your probably end up having to take new ownership and change permissions within security, depends where yourve put your files and what OS you were using on the old HD.

Hi every one, thanks for all your help so far :y :y The hard drive plugged straight in no problems and i could read everything off of the drive, well almost everything. it's my mom's pc and she told me she uploaded all her photo's to a program called picasa? but says she never had to sign in or anything so i assume its not on a cloud hard drive and should be some were on the one ive taken out. ao does any one have anyidea where about the photo's could be?
Also i found what i think to be the problem with the "old" pc my sister said "it was dirty so i cleaned it"" :o it turns out she took off this part in the picture

Panic over found the photo's :D, but does any one think it can be fixed?

The fan is for keeping the CPU cool.
There is a heatsink (The finned aluminium block which helps take the heat away from the CPU and the then the fan blow cold air on to the heat sink to cool it.
The CPU - Central Processing Unit it basically the brain of the computer and dictates the computers speed and perforfance. When operating gets fairly hot, hence the Heatsink and fan combination to cool it, there is generallt some (White) thermal parst between the CPU and Heatsink.
Looking at the CPU it is and older version, the bent pins are a sod to straighten, if the snap then consider the CPU knackered.

A replacement CPU might cost peanuts from Ebay and you may even be able to fit a faster one.
Have a look at the main system board (Motherbaord) that the CPU was pluged into. Have a look for a brand name, Focom, Abit, Asus, Gigabyte, MSI are just a few brand names, then look for a model number and I will check the net for you to see what can be fitted.
Also have a look on the otherside of the CPU for any writing to tell what it is.
Also be aware of static in your hands, it is allways advisable to discharge yourself by touching the computer case chassis for example, this could save furthar damage to any electronic components.

Okay with my limited knowledge of about everything could it possibly be for the mother board ATA 133? or maybe HT 2000? or even PCI EXPRESS?? and on the CPU is
