Title: Number Plate machines/printers?
Post by: Del Boy on 12 March 2010, 19:21:08
A long shot but your a knowledgeable bunch of chaps and chapettes, anyone familair with number plate making equipment? I'd like to get the stuff as I have the company name postcode etc so they would be legal, but I want High quality plates, do the printers with Print Pro software print quality stuff? Or would I need a proper machine with a press and such. It seems a good business venture that would go well with selling cars  :y

It can be done with Windows paint and a laser printer ;) the only other thing is a roller to put it through for ease of sticking it and taking out the bubbles. The only difficult thing is setting up the spacing but once you do it you have your template.  :y

* oh and remember to flip over the letters so the the individual letters are backwards ;)

You probably have to be registered or licenced to make them for on road use, and the process and materials might be stipulated to you.
I'm only guessing but I could understand if this is the case.

Plus there are probably silly rules that you are not allowed to make plates for your own company.

I understand that people like MOT stations cant MOT thier own cars for fraudulent reasons, but would check all the rules before buying plate making equipment, you know what our government is like at males laws and rukes etc.

Del.......

Unfortunately you CANNOT put anything now on a numberplate apart from the postcode of the making premises. (DVLA new rules, as from 1-1-01)  This is to stop people putting "PUG 306 GTI" and such on the bottom of their plates. SORRY.

I got warned recently for having something written on mine to advertise my business. Was told 3 points and £60 next time!!!

Mike.

The rules on Number plates are very simple .. but they are not enforced at MOT time .. only by the Police/VOSA checks..  unless this notice has been superceded and I don't think it has ...

http://www.dft.gov.uk/vosa/repository/Special%20Notice%2010-07.pdf

There is quite a lot of info on this site regarding plates and making plates ..

A lot of it is just legislation for the sake of it - part of moving to a you do what is permitted not do whatever is not banned society.

There is a huge difference and this is Tony and Gordons legacy.

It is something to due with the EU and Napolionic law I think
