Time to wear riot gear then whilst making my fuel deliveries. My thick skin is showing signs of wear.If I had a pound for everytime someone said "You couldn't put some in here mate could ya?"gesturing towards their car, then I actually would be very wealthy. At a discharge rate of 700 to 800 litres a minute with a 4" hose it would be very messy too :o

I have come around to the thinking that, all things considered, the current average of £1.15 a litre is managable, regardless of whether or not it's over priced.
At the end of the day, we drive (or at least, I used to :D ) 20/25mpg V6 cars by choice.
The "average" reasonably new petrol car on the road, will do at least 40mpg.
A car that does an average of 40mpg, with fuel at £1.15 a litre, will cost 13.1p per mile - or £13.10 for 100 miles.
And if economy is important to you (as it is to me right now) then you can pick up a 55mpg+ diesel car for reasonable money.
In that example, an average of 55mpg, with derv at 117p per litre, the running cost is just 9.7p per mile, or £9.70 for 100 miles...
(That said, I do miss driving a mig :D )

Fortunately I have the option of stepping out of a petrol Omega and stepping into a diesel one! DTi is never going to set the tyres alight but 550 miles to the tank commuting and over 600 on the motorway means i'll put up with the performance drop..... for now.
My 3.2 was averaging 320 a tank so with the price of petrol and diesel being nearly the same i'll stick with the DTi in the week.
Of course if a facelift 3.2 MV6 saloon in black came up at the right price i'd jump at the chance to LPG it :)

I have an astra 1700dti (it gets double the mpg of my omega) which sits at the door all the time because its a pile of shite to drive compaired to my omega .
I think if the goverment had its way we would all be driving about in 1000cc micra sized fart boxes anyway and think it will come to that anyway in the years to come so i am enjoying it while i can :y

Yes and only government ministers will be allowed to have big engined cars. Along with there second homes etc etc.... All paid for by our taxes

Up and up and up it goes...
I've been in the unfortunate position of having to change jobs several times as companies fortunes take a dive in recent times. Each time I've had to commute further and further. Each time I've had to take a hit in the car I drive, so now I sit in a 55mpg+ corsa for hours every day. I pay high road tax because the car is old and 1.7l (non-turbo). Each time the fuel cost rises I wonder whether it's all worth it as essentially the budget in my house means that ends *just* meet, and every time that a couple of pence gets stuck on fuel it means ends *just don't* meet and I need to make a cut in my life somewhere else. I'd move nearer my job, but I'd end up with a bigger mortgage. I'd buy an even more efficient car, but simply don't have the funds. I'd get a job closer to home, but there are non in the industry I'm trained in. I'd retrain, but I've a family to support and can't take the time off.
Currently feels like I'm on a treadmill and the government are gradually increasing the incline bit by bit.

My wife and I had exactly this situation a couple of years ago where it was simply getting too expensive to commute to work, so we decided in the end to take the bigger mortgage and lower fuel costs. Now that fuel prices have gone up again we are saving over £100 per month doing this, simply from moving 35 miles away from work to somewhere within 8. I am now looking at cycling to work to make my commute free once my neck & shoulder have healed.
It really is worth doing the maths. Work out what you are spending in fuel each month/year, then get some rough idea of how much your mortgage would go up by if you bought somewhere nearer work. This would be made easier if you have an idea of the value of your home.

The worst thing is on the main road into Grimsby there is a sign saying 'Welcome to Great Grimsby'.I think the council should have a visit from Trading Standards about that. ;D

you are lucky you dont have to live here..
But unfortunately some Brits living in touristic areas have to pay that.. :-/

I live in Habrough in north east lincs, 2 miles away from one of the biggest oil refineries in the UK, there is a jet petrol station within 300 yards of the refinery gates, unleaded is £1.14 litre, if i drive to SLady bitshorpe 20 miles away (as i do 2 or 3 times a week ) unleaded is £1.11 litre !!! how can that be right ? They could have a hose from the refinery to the service station across the road at next to no cost, its cheaper in SLady bitshorpe even with transportation costs.

If I moved closer to work I could have a bigger house for the same payments, think I will stick with what we have and take the hit on fuel, less than 14 miles to work, depending on which route I drive.... :D :D
