Title: Data hosting query
Post by: splott on 17 March 2010, 16:32:57
Is there an internet site that I can use to temporarily hold data. My laptop is slowly dying and I need to transfer files over to another one. The CD has packed in and the pen drive is to small but I need this info. on another laptop.  :'(
Any ideas? :y

issue with hosting is upload speeds, its going to take too long. Buy a cheap portable hard disk, and back your HD up to that.... use something like Ghost

If its just data files you don't need to use ghost .. just copy them straight to an exterrnal USB drive ..

:)

If you want on-line then this google search gives loads of hits ..

I don't have an external drive, except for a small pen drive. I would be walking between PC's all night using the pen drive. :'( :'(

Store them in your email account, but do CC's to a 2nd email account as a backup.  Speed/time could ne an issue.

Is it the laptop or the hard drive in the laptop that is dying.  If the hard drive is ok you can get a 2.5" to 3.5" ide adapter to stick your lappy HD in your PC from CPC ay a later date for the sake of about £3.00, or is the data critical and required again today.

TBH .. if the files are THAT important  and the Lappy is THAT suspect .. then get down to your local PC World (AHHHHH  I mentioned that company :( ) or local computer shop if you have one .. and BUY an external USB drive. They are not expensive now-a-days... and you should be backing up important data anyway.

Enable file sharing and make sure both PC's have the same workgroup name.

DO NOT LINK THEM DIRECTLY, use a hub or a router.

Data is not critical. The hard drive is OK but the screen is slowly deteriorating and Cd is knackered can't burn to it.

Does the lappy have a 15pin monitor coctor on it, if it has and you have a spare monitor then set it up before your screen dies.

Set your lappy to file share and share the drives and set the network before hte screen gives up.   :y

Not sure what you mean, do I just connect both PC's to the router using cable?

Sorry, I'm not computer literate. Do you mean the normal connector that is supplied with the router ie Hard wired? :-/

Yes, the RJ45/network connection.

Not being rude, but if you are unsure how to connect it, actaully copying is going to be harder  :-[

Reckon you will be better off getting a USB device as others previously stated ;)

I Know :y
I understand most things about PC's, just not networking. I'm a PLC programmer, mobus, profibus etc. not a PC programmer. :-[ :-[
