Title: Smokers
Post by: alunonhisown on 17 March 2010, 13:26:08
How many of our members now smoke.
I have been at it since I was 18. and I smoke about 30 a day.
Filthy habit I know.
Was thinking of going onto hand rolling as £9 a day for fags is silly.
I tried giving it up all to no avail.
D.

If I can give it up after 35 years at 40 a day, so can you. Do it now, or else you will die horribly and be destitute and lots of other bad things. :P

Like many of my generation i smoked since i was 14, 10 a week, then went up to 40 at one period, though 15-20 a day on average over 35 odd years.  After trying to stop for three 2-year periods within that time i eventually stopped in 2007 and haven't touched a fag since, i used that nice gum for a long time but need to stop them completely.

It is always hard, nicotine is a very strong addiction, i have bronchitis which may never clear up and lost a few teeth but apart from that no permanent damage  :)

i hope  :-/

When I started taking singing lessons at 12yo my teacher frightened me with pictures of lungs of a smoker and tales of early death from terrible diseases. Have to say I never even considered it an option, and 30-odd years later, performing with my guitar in pubs and clubs my voice is still good........glad I didn't try it now!

Respect a persons right to smoke if they want to, as long as its not in my house or car. Must be terrible trying to quit.

I gave up OTC medicines quite easily, well, it was a struggle over a single weekend, but fags, I have tried, tried everything.
Not a chance.

i have been smoking since i was 13, 35 years, smoke between 10 and 40 a day. used to be more till the assoles got smoking banned from the pubs. and they are the ones who never go in the pub. so now most pubs are either always empty or closing down, because of the people who dont smoke who dont go in the pubs.

Started for the wrong reason as well (yes i was dumb enough to start cuz i liked at the time did it... i was young shhh) but yeh, would really love to jus quit

my pub used to be packed solid, there is only 3 non smokers in there now. also brown put the duty up so much not many can afford to go out to the pubs now. he has totally killed the pub scene. 18 shut down here last year. i use the legion when i want to do a big session as its a quid a pint cheaper.  :)

I was selling Carling at 99p a pint before I left, still people would not come in, they preferred to stay at home and smoke at will in the house. I gave in and cut my losses.
There is no-one selling fags here, I have 150 packs of GV but cannot sell them for love nor money, not that I care .

I smoked fro 18 to 40, up to 40 a day

Gave up 18 months ago with the help of Niquitin Lozenges, only thing that did it for me - That and getting out of breath so fast playing footie with my boys

Do it, it's not easy as some say but the benefits are huge. I can run around with the lads, smell things I didn't notice before (herbs in the garden) and have a sense of taste back I didn't realise I'd lost.

Set a date, work towards it and put a good portion of the money you've saved aside and treat yourself - don't let it just disappear to other commitments ( I paid for my Ducati partly through doing this)

Be determined, but don't stop till you're ready. Good luck

ps You'll get fat  ;), but that comes oof

Did'ya see that, i did a gag  ;D

I gave up 13 years ago after smoking Camel, B & H, and the strong stuff in tins from FOB restaurants, plus 7 years of cigars only.

Once decision made never touched any tobacco again.

If you are going to do it though then combine with taking up some physical activity eg walking, cycling.

Walking is pretty good at our age - choose good location etc but have a purpose.

smoking isnt good,it is bad for you of course it is. i love smoking. i love the taste of a fag. i love drinking and i love pubs. i wont let some assole who sits in doors 7 days a week, waiting for her hip replacement which my smoking caused , who doesnt smoke or drink herself tell me my lifestyle offends them.

It is a shame about the Pub scene, most of my "locals" have gone.  At one time there was nothing better i liked than relaxing outside a quaint country pub, sitting in the afternoon sun by a babbling stream with a pint of best and a ciggy....the end of an era  :(

though wait,  the quaint country pub, the sunshine, the babbling stream, the pint of best are all still there!  :)

yippeee off i go  ::)

i smoke, unfortunately, maybe 10 a day? have to agree with Richie on the smoking ban - not only has it killed off so many pubs but it looks terrible all these gangs of smokers hanging around outside the pub - if the tories said they would lift the ban i'd maybe vote for them  :o

I stopped 17 years ago from 40 a day .. so it can be done .. hard work .. but do-able.... no patches/gums .. just will power and discomfort.

I am now the worlds worst ex-smoker .. I hate the smell of smoke and would never go into a pub that allowed smoking again.

The pleasure of enjoying the smell and taste of food and beer without the overpowering stench of stale tobacco is wonderful.

I can only apologise to all those who had to put up with my stinking habit for the previous 20 odd years.

IMHO the tax on tobacco should be tripled by any government .. now that WOULD get my vote .. :y :y :y

You're more than welcome to smoke near me, I gave up 8yrs ago. But I did enjoy it at the time.
For the very first time the other week I could smell smoke on my daughter's clothes, she doesn't smoke, but had been stood with some who were smoking at the door of the civic hall before they all went home. It does stink!

Gave up in 2001 after 38 years @ about 15 - 20 Dunhill Kings a day.

One packet of patches was enough.  No longer tempted to put anything in my mouth and set fire to it, but I love the smell of other people's smoke, while hating the smell of other people who have just smoked.

Admittedly, the spur to giving up was having an operation on my nose which put paid to smoking for a week, but the hacking cough was pointing me that way anyway.

Downside - I've put on 3 stone, only sleep 3 hours a night and have become increasingly intolerant of absolutely everything. :(

Jereboam, same here its the smallist things that wind me up but glad i did it

I smoked to 26years mostly rollies, went to the docs because of stomach trouble and just mentioned to him that i wanted to give up and that was it.

Booked in to see nurse and she put me on the patches. I came off the patches three months later and been clean ever since.

Mind you there are times, not stressed time, when out of the blue i get a craving, only for a minute but they are still there.

Worst thing though is i've got a proper big Cuban Cigar at home the cost about 50USD  which was brought for me a few years back............

Good luck to anyone trying to give up, as they say don't give up giving up

Cheers
Andy

I've managed 38 years on the planet and never had the urge to have one.My mum stopped about twenty years ago for lent and she still died of cancer,my dad has cut down a lot but both my sisters still are chimneys.I don't like the smell and it has no appeal to me what so ever.If I really wanted to set fire to my money then I would roll up a tenner set it alight and watch it go up in smoke with a smug grin knowing that Gordon Brown is getting nothing in tax from me for doing it.I prefer to burn my money by paying for petrol for the car or bike  ;)

Here's the thing, to stop smoking you must get it out of your head that you are GIVING UP. It is a habit and must be stopped. i've read a book on this by Alan Carr IIRC and it's very good :y. I just stopped though way before reading his book. I ran out of fags one day and thought I would get some more later but never did. They were about £3 a pack then :o

I smoke a few roll ups a day & admit it is a ridiculous, unhealthy expensive thing to do. The only time i stopped was in the early 80's when i was sentanced to 3 months detention centre (William Whitelaw's short sharp shock) & Haslar, Gosport & you simply were'nt allowed to. However the screws smoked around you all day & as said i loved the smell at the time but afterwards it was rank so understand where non smokers are coming from. I still enjoy it though, i could give up & get killed at work tomorrow.
Pubs? I don't bother anymore. I think every publican should be given the choice to allow or not. This would give the patrons the choice instead of smug know alls deciding for us. Lastly i but off the boat baccy & am sick of folk saying i'm doing the government out of revenue. To that i say if they were'nt so fricking greedy & fell in line with the rest of the EU we've been forced into then i would'nt have to & folk would'nt smuggle back from said EU countries to sell on here. Too many fat hands in the pot trying to compensate for thier cock ups.

my parents are in there late 70s, father 80 this year.smoked since they were kids. they say people are living longer now but thats people born in the 30's not born in the 60s or 70s or even 80s, how old will we live to having to eat the shite were told to eat. my parents grew there own fruit and veg, naturally grown not grown with pesticides to make them grow bigger or quicker.i never had fizzy drinks and chocolate for breakfast, didnt have junk food for lunch or tea.we all sat down as a family for a proper dinner. thats gone out the window because of mans greed for money.parents cant be bothered or havent the time to cook proper meals or cannot afford it. how many families have a proper sunday roast. sunday dinner is a curry or a takeaway for lots of people. if i make 60 that'll do for me i reckon. i will never bow down to any govt telling me what to eat drink or if i shouldnt smoke. its my desicion and mine alone.  :)

Smoking got me when I was 44, Lung Cancer and I had no idea I was ill, discovered almost by accident ::) ::) After some Major surgery and a few spells in hospital I am still around, but physically shot for much of the year get a lot of chest infections which 'wipe me out' for around a month at a time. Lost my HGV and PSV licences for a few years but got them back a couple of years ago :)  :( Still holding down a Job though....... :y :y

I recently had a full medical, ecg, blood /urine tests, blood pressure cholesteral the works. I'm fine, don't deserve to be but i am. I was born in 1963. My Mum drank milk every day (she hates it) for calcium, teeth bones etc. I was fed proper home cooked food which i still eat now.
Dad's 80, Mum's 70. Mum has a couple of ciggies with a drink or two every evening as does Dad with a cigar. Unlike me they are well to do respectable folk who have lived through everyone being an expert in what is & what is'nt good for you & proved all our tax paying wages wrong.

Living proof. I rest my case. :y
