trying to use xrandr to interogate the graphics settings as the gdm app throws out a signal the monitor cannot support. I keep getting the error "Can't open display"
Searched the web and everyone who gets this error gets silence from the linux community :-/
Help!

man xrandr
XRANDR(1)
NAME
xrandr - primitive command line interface to RandR extension
I have never use RandR or xrandr, what do you need to use it for?
Which distribution are you running?

Hmm. Haven't had to play with Linux display configuration for many years. Normally works out of the box these days. I remember it being a batsrad though. :(
Will have a dig.

On Debian I would start by checking /var/log/Xorg.0.log
Also would type
lspci
to list the pci devices recognised on the machine.

Found the problem.
Startup would be ok until the KDU loaded, then I would get an 'Out of range' message from the monitor. It all pointed to the wrong resolution/freq setting. Eventually tried the onboard graphics but not before going down a rabbit hole of xrandr and xorg.conf manipulations but all at the command prompt by switching displays using ALT+CNTL+Fx. Now I am in the GUI and downloading the linux drivers for my radeon gfx card :y
Slowly getting back into the Linux groove 8-)

By the way, loving the speed of this compared to Windows 7 :y
