Title: Gah! Centre Tie Rod!
Post by: Nextgen on 17 April 2007, 14:09:22
After having replaced idler, outside tie rods, shocks, alignment, etc etc etc, its now painfully obvious that the last thing to be worn out, causing wander ('cos theres visible play, and causing extreme inner tyre edge wear) is in fact the centre tie rod ball joints.

Can I get new balls pressed in?? Can I get a cheap complete rod??

Any help greatly appreciated..

Edwin

PS Bilstein OEM shocks and Balance motorsport are top top quality..

Just a thought, what about the wishbones?  This seems to come up on here fairly often in relation to steering wander uneven tyre wear etc.

Centre tie rods are often on ebay, or try Autovaux.

Can be difficult to split the ball joint tapers, normal splitters wont fit in so use the old fashioned technique of striking either side of the socket with a pair of hammers.

Inner edge shoulder wear on tyre is usually camber related....

Wishbones, Idler, Shocks etc are all new (and properly fitted) - I agree the camber needs a sort out (probably the aligners didnt weight the car when setting it up).

The ball joints in the centre tie rod (the steering box/idler ones) have movement they shouldnt have in them (both on the car and off...), and the rubber boot on one of them is split...

I just want that bar replaced to complete the set ;-)

If any come up, new or *with new ball joints* I'd love one!
Cheers,
Edwin
