My Estate has now been declared uneconomical to repair as the quote to ""bodge it"" was £1400.....im waiting to hear from insurance company either today or tomorrow with an offer,i know the first offer will be ridiculously low as they normally are but im wondering what would be a fair settlement firstly as a standard full pay out and they take the car away and secondly a payout after ive bought the car back.
Car is a 1997 2.5 GLS Tourer with 116,000 miles....Before the ""ooppss to close too that wall"" incident the car was in very good condition as per pic below.
Any thoughts would be welcome on a settlement figure. :y

Well I would be looking for 1400 quid as a settlement....

I think the offer is very good.

Blimey that much....do you think thats a realistic figure, not dealt with insurance claims before so not sure how far i should push things. :-/
-
they'll take excess off that too wont they?

Im sure they will deduct the excess before offer....excess is only £100 so shouldnt make much difference.
-
You have no voluntary excess then.....
The starter for ten will be a trade in price.....you want a replacement price....

No just the ""no choice"" excess.
One thing ive just realised that could throw a spanner in the works i cant find my V5 at the moment....its not where i expected it too be,can they still go ahead with the claim without it..Id have thought they could search DVLA database to verify its registered too me..???? :-[
-
depending on the insurance company, they often dont release the payment until the V5 has been "surrendered"

Bugger....had it somewhere safe, just cant lay my hands on it at the moment.
Time to bite the bullet and call the insurance company and ask the question.......... :-[

As Mark says, they offer a value based on Glass's and CAP's trade value of the car. Always makes me laugh when they do that.... Expect an offer of £550-£600
Remind them at that point that you are not looking to trade in your car nor are you a trader, you are now in a postion where you have to look at replacing your car, so their valuation model is not applicable!
They will then say, "so what do you reckon is a fair valuation?"
I would go with £1,400. You won't get it, but in all commercial negotiations you always pitch in higher to give yourself room.
They will request information to back up your valuation. When they do, start looking on Autotrader.
If you need any more assistance, let me know. Unfortunately both myself and Mark have had to do this recently... :-[

Just off the phone and i have two options....either accept £1050 after excess (£100) and give them the car or keep the car and a cheque for £800.
Ive said the car is worth more than the £1150 offered but the car said he was looking on auto trader as we chatted (nice bloke actually) and he said that there was plenty around my age and slightly newer making £1100/£1200 and if i wanted to refuse offer id need to send insurance company proof that id have too pay more than the current offer to replace my car like for like.
So guys what shall i do....take a grand and let them have the car or £800 and keep it,if i keep it it needs a new MOT before its allowed back on the road and will have Cat C stamped on log book.??????
COME ON YOU GUYS WHAT SHALL I DO....... ;D

Take the £800, and break the car. Easily get the £200 back when the car is sold in bits :y

If you keep the car and take the cheque, you're going to be spending it all (and more) on sorting out the damage. I'd be tempted to take the £1050 and get a newer model even though you'll probably have to stump up a bit more cash. :y
-
Easy Take the £800 and keep the car.
Repair it yourself or strip the car and sell the bits

take the £800, break the car, as most others have said, cos surely you can get plenty of the difference if not all back from parts
-
Well you know what they say.....act in haste and repent at your leisure......well guess what ive accepted the £1150,with the excess im looking at £1050. :-/
I know i could get a mate to do the body work,ok it would look a bodge but that wouldn't worry me too much and then ive a mate who is an MOT tester so he would make sure it was up to scratch (no pun intended) for the MOT....but then id still have the niggly bits to sort on it so thought sod it take the cash.
Ive still got the Elite which now has the climate working spot on and puncture repaired (thought it was the tracking :-[) Good service and a set of break pad sensors and its a lovely car.....might drive that for a week or two and sell it and add that to the grand from the estate.
Now gotta see what the Elite is worth with 6 months tax and 12 months MOT...... :)
Regards stripping it......would anyone really have wanted parts off a 116,000 mile engine and its only a GLS so no toys or leather. :(
-
I'm too late to comment but I think your rationale is sound. A lot of extra work for a few hundred quid more and unless your confident and have the right tools. :-/
Shame though :(
-
you would have got more than £200 for it on eBay as "spares and repair"
Its an Estate which are always popular :y

But thing is tunnie its an estate in a state.....no really it is ;)
Chopsdad is right if i had plenty of free time and the tools then stripping it might have been the way forward, but as i have neither then all the work for a couple of hundred wouldnt have been worth the hassle.
Ive chilled abit now and think ive done the right thing.....not sure how far a Grand will get me though. :-/

A Grand? You could use it as a deposit on my V-reg facelift ELITE autoi with LPG.

Yeah and how much would still be outstanding money wise.... ;D
Or you could see whats out there Ronnie....say a nice 2.0/2.5 saloon that would receive the Ronnie Mcb Special touch in the grandish area. ;)
Even better once youve found said motor car you could take my spiffing Elite as part Ex.... :y ;D
