Title: Your careing dealer?
Post by: Auto Addict on 22 April 2007, 13:52:06
Until January 2006 I had always had my car regularly services by a dealer, I won't name them, but you don't have to 'Look' very far.

After that I have always done the serviceing myself, with major jobs done by Mark.

The first time I came to change the oil, I had to get the sump plug off using a breaker bar, and the oil filter off using a filter wrench.

In January 2007, MOT time, I let a different dealer change the oil and filter, to get my service book stamped.

3 months on, oil change due, and guess what, breaker bar to remove the sump plug, almost completely knackered (good job I'd got a new one), and filter wrench to remove the oil filter.

Why did I bother for the sake of getting my service book stamped. >:(

Its worth getting the book stamped AA, in case you ever need to sell on. Omegas are worth little enough even with history, and, would you touch one without?

I'd buy from selective owners on here, whether the book was stamped or not.

Sadly, mine will never be stamped again, I keep a separate record of all the servicing and work done on mine now, plus all the receipts for parts.

I figure I never tend to sell cars until they're pretty much worthless so I service all 3 cars myself and use some of the cash I've saved to treat myself to some new tools every now and then  ;)

Last time I took a car to a dealer (a Renault in this case :-X ) I got home and thought I'd have a little look under the bonnet to see if there was any evidence of them doing the requested work. Turns out the evidence was all over the engine bay. They hadn't bothered to push the dipstick fully home and it had hosed down the engine bay with oil  >:(

Last time a dealer touched mine - I won't mention them, but they are a Vauxhall dealer in Crownhill, and are owned by Messers Evans and Halshaw - they charged me for touching lots of bits. Shame the lying, cheating, fraudulent tosspots didn't touch it.  Except the handbrake, which they left disconnected. W@nkers  >:(

I always service my own cars and put the receipts in the back of the service book with the date and milages writen on when the service was done.

I have a 5 & 3/4 years old car with 5 Vx Dealer stamps - and like AA I am not sure what to do come the next due service this June...

I think I will pay the cost of the full service just to get the stamp, but then slip another tenner to the service manager with instructions to not do anything on the car  ;D

Seriously, I might go for TD'd advice - look for a small MasterFit outlet, pay them for oil&filter change only, and if possible do this while watching them closely (you can with the smaller ones), then get a MasterFit stamp...

Anyway I will have to make up my mind one way or the other by the end of June how I get the book stamped without the dealers getting their paws on my car...  :(

Go down the Masterfit route. All Vauxhall dealers do Masterfit, though they may not advertise it. Around £60 for a minor service on V6 iirc.

sorry to hi-jack, but what exactly is given to you on a masterfit £60 thing??

When I was last in the dealer they said it would just say 'oil & filter' I need more than that for Proof the senny has been serviced for European break down cover...

Agreed, but if a potential buyer rings up the dealer (one of the good things about dealer servicing, when you are a buyer), and dealer denies all knowledge.....

In this forum we do no not support, condone, encourage, or otherwise participate in the illegal provision of forged dealer stamps. Any such posts will be deleted and the offenders penalised at the discretion of the administrator team, 'flogging through the fleet' being the favourite (look it up).

(pssst... where can you get them and how much do they cost?  ;))

Edit: THAT'S NOT ME! THIS SITE IS LOONEY, TRANSLATING 'O F F E N D E R S' to 'OFFBUMPERS'!  >:(

That's better than a Service History in my eyes...  Exactly what I do and would look for when buying!!!   I can get a book stamped for a pint or two, I wouldn't IT'S WRONG...  so there, means nothing!!!!

RANT OVER!  DC, Over and Out......

Well I DIY because I can't afford dealer servicing, also not many jobs are too difficult the only scarey one I know of is the cam belt.

I might leave the thermostat untill I next visit my parents.

My dad is a retired mechanic so does tend to know how to fix cars. However it is years since I have stripped an engine (complete rebuild on a Rootes short stroke 1600)

After having the MV6 repatriated a couple of years back, the breakdown insurance people (understandably) asked for service history.  I just gave them the dealers name, date, and mileage.  Worth the annual £60 Masterfit minor service (read oil change).... ;)

Good job I have a retired Peugeot/BMW/Skoda mechanic for advice - not well enough to help now though.

Never had an issue with anyone with DIY, but then I used to cover stupid mileages in a banger which was reliable
