Title: 8422 members
Post by: Sixstring on 29 June 2010, 12:45:43
Sounds good, doesn't it?
8422 members, but about 60 "regular" contributors, of which about 25 contribute every day.
Where are all the other 8300 -odd ones??

C'mon you lot, don't just join and reap the benefits of the wealth of knowledge available here, CONTRIBUTE to the community, share your anecdotes, give correct advice, help others, and make this forum better and increace the knowledge base. DON'T just log in and take, GIVE something back too.

Even someone who posts once a week only is a "regular" contributor, but I take the point.
Some of us put up 10 or more posts a day, some a lot more, but mostly the same "old guard" and seeing there are Eight Thousand or so others, Where are they?

They're all too busy standing outside or at work wondering what the hell to fix next ?

It seems likely to me that a number will have joined to solve a specific problem and then got on with their life.

Some will even have joined to fix a problem they lived-with on their Omega but wanted to fix so that they could sell it!

It is quite extraordinary in my view that OOF works as it does.

No harm trying to wake a few lurkers I suppose. :)

Think you're being a bit unfair there Sixstring.

I don't contribute tons myself - but whenever I've received help from other members I'm the first to post a thank you to them. And to share anything - however small - I might have picked up along the way. I've had my Omega for almost 8 years now, and only joined for real when I thought I might be able to contribute a morsel in return for all the ace advice.

Thing is - long-serving members have so much experience that my little contributions seem a bit trivial.

That's life I guess. Now look - you've made me grumpy.
OK - more grumpy.

Must admit, this is how I feel. You only gain a real knowledge of something when it breaks and you have to fix it. Thankfully not much has broken on mine so I have limited input but I try to advise if there is a topic that I'm familiar with, otherwise I keep quiet and observe from a distance. :-[ :-[ :y

I'm only here regularly because.....
a) My car is always going wrong somewhere :(
b) In between shopping & school runs, I have lots of time on my hands (when I'm not fixing the car!):-?
c) I'm 'Billy no Mates' in the flesh, so come on here to pretend i've got 8421 on 'tinternet'  :D ;D ;D ;D ;)

Aw......c'mon fellers!!!

No niggling here, just trying to get more people to join our happy bantering!!!

Not digging at ANYONE for not contributing, just trying to get a bit of "new blood" into the daily satirical rablings of the "old guard"..............

No-body cares.....going home now.......... :-X :-X :-X (LOL!)

Hi All, I joined last year after I bought my Omega. I knew nothing about these lovely 'beasts'. I have since cleaned out the scuttle drain, changed the pollen filter and just changed the nylon bush in the drivers door to eliminate the 'clicking' as I opened the door. I know these are minor jobs, but I didn't know how to do them previously, so thank you to all who have posted maintenance guides etc 8-). I don't post regularly due to knowing nothing about cars :'(

I have unfortunately just developed a light oil leak from underneath the car. My local(trustworthy) garage is having a look on Friday, so I may being asking for your help again.

time mate, just having the time to come on here is a problem sometimes. Well, that and not having much to say! Seriously though, like you say, there are a group of regular contributors and if youve been away for a bit sometimes its a bit awkward to just join in. See, maybe were just a bit shy and retiring. You know, like skruntie... ;D

It doesn't matter how much or little you know about the Omegas, your help is what the Forum is all about....
At sometime someone will ask how to change an oil filter for example, you may have just done yours..... in which case how ever smaller job you think you have just done, you have helped someone tenfold when you tell them :y

You may well laugh, but i was ages plucking up the courage to enen say hello, and when some said hello and welcome in return I was amazed as generally no one does this.

Then I was a while again before I dare say something with out feeling daft, now I just dont care any more.

Most of the forum is tounge in cheek humour, nothing is meant by it, if it's not your thing then you just dont contribute.

repeating what I have said before, say hello and make 1 post, that then gives the ability to PM, a dozen or so members with less than 5 posts have PM'd me for advice, some because I was local and others because they had searched and found I had commented on thier problem. from what I remember they went on to make more public posts.

There are subject of interest for everyone..  Nickbat for example posts quite a lot, I read the 1st post, if it's of interest to me i follow it, if not I dont, some of his threads have gone on for ages and have created grat intest and debate.  The bus thread is still going alooking like getting a 1000 replies onday, and I have no interest in that at all.

But if there's something worthy of a mention then create a thread for it.  In fact the last time this subject poped up one of the quiet members joined in and posted on his model making, also posting a picture of hin sat inside one of his own remote controlled tanks.  :y

no offence meant skruntie, and what you say about summoning up the courage to do those first posts probably applies to most of us. Once youre on board you can not only enjoy a bit of banter but also be educated and entertained by the wealth and diversity of the knowledge of people on here. As you say, if a particular thread doesnt appeal, then dont participate. Most are probably like myself who joined when I got the mig and wanted access to some help and advice and found that the forum could offer a lot more besides.

No offence taken.

I have learnt quite a lot about the Omega, I certainly fell clueless compared to most.  But it's surprising how many times I have been able to post a reply regards little problems to someone who is surfing in the early hours/at work and as they have got a soloution, like resetting the climate, windows or sunroof they were able to do the job as they got in the car next time.

I feel If I can learn something new every day then I am doing well.

Power steering  assistance was my learning curve yesterday.  I have a fauly seat heater it seems, and I caught the button whilt playing with the TC the other day, soon as the fuse blew it took out the climate control.  Unkown to me at the time it also affected the power steering.

Drove the car to Doncaster yesterday to get a mate to finnish my brakes and forgot to change the blown fuse before I set off.  So had a 15 mile run with heavyier steering and no climate.  interestingly got a 37MPg ave with cruise at 47/48mph for the country twisties and maxed at 60 on the straights for just a steady run.

brakes sorted, fuse in, climate on, ctuise at 55mph, 65mph tops on the way homeand on straighter roads got a 27mpg average on the way home.

just realiesed, I reset the comp once on the move on the out journey, but reset before setting off on the return.

Might do both trips again with the fuse in/out same speeds/roads/direction to see if the steering did make a difference, would have thought more ecconomical when active though.

Ive just turned 250 plus posts in around 5 years. I try to post sensibly and to try and help others or seek advice when needed. I thought this was the purpose of the forum. To keep as many Omegas on the road as possible.

i dont post that much because im a miggy noob dont know too much about them as i was/am a ford guy ask me about fords and ill tell you but vauxhalls never interested me untill i got my rwd machine.
my speciality is lpg since im a aproved installer but there isnt that many posts about lpg help ( maybe there is) would it also be an idea to have a lpg help section so it stands out more) just to help the guys buying migs and putting in there own system etc.
i try to think of things i could help with but to be honest if you search nearly everything has been spoken about and questions answered its just the post dies and it goes to the back of the garage so to speak.
all of us try to make an effort but its kind of hard to when you dont really know the people you are speaking to, okay there are meets but i live all the way up in aberdeen and have found loads of migs but only 1 of the guys is on the oof.

i have said my piece now  (i think) if i think of more ill add it :)

Now that is a skill often sought on this Forum Andy, and if you watch out for the LPG posts, of which I have seen many, then you can certainly make a name for yourself :D :D ;) ;)
