Title: Need a new video camera
Post by: Martin_1962 on 01 July 2010, 23:22:38
My old one is basically worn out. And a bit bashed.

Looks like I am down to Sony or Canon for tape based now.

I now need to save up £800 before the internet sellers sell out!!!!

What models are you looking at Martin.

Am surprised you are not considering going to HD Widescreen.

Looking at HD ones

Tape - instant archive - how much do HDD cameras HDDs cost?

How easy to change when full?

I have 24 year old tapes still usable

Interesting answer.  I'm still on Mini DV but SD.  They are still going to need to transfer to another medium at some point though.  That's when the compression temptation kicks in  ;D.  I usually lay off to DVD so choose how many to make out of a tape according to perceived value of source material.  I still keep the masters.

FYI HDV standard does not accept 1920x1080, it maxes-out at 1440x1080 so recorders down-convert and (hopefully) up-convert on playback.  Other formats do other reckless things to make storage time acceptable.

If you're burning irreplaceable family footage just remember not all blank DVD's are equal, some of the Ritek dies had a life span measured in months (Taiyo Yuden came out top). I investigated this a few years back to see if DVD was a viable long term archive for company data, as you might guess we didn't go that way!

I have recaptured all of my old Beta camera tapes and filled a 1TB HDD with them. Mini DV tales 14GB per hour and I my camera won't survive recapturing the rest.

I always keep the original hence not wanting HDD or memory card.

It's what data-storage people archive data onto if they really, really, really value it. :)

Archiving is indeed a headache now if your work-flow is tapeless ( pull off an SxS or CF card onto a hard drive, edit then out to broadcast) - we have just got one of the first of these in the UK:

http://www.usa.canon.com/dlc/controller?act=GetArticleAct&articleID=3407

 At 50Mbps MPEG-2 4:2:2 1080/50i (1920 x 1080), onto UDMA CF cards it will gobble around 32GB in 80 mins.

An archive is important for us, but Blu-Ray (a hassle) or server based storage are the only viable options... at a big expense. So tapeless work-flow is wonderful but there are trade-offs.

The same will be true in domestic set-ups as discussed earlier. DVD's do not last as long as tape stored correctly and are a tad more unreliable. I have had umpteen bad optical discs since they were invented and only four yes 4 bad professional tapes in 30 years.

If you want to easily, cheaply and safely keep all that you have shot - stick with well stored tape formats. If you only want to keep your "edited highlights" a hard drive camcorder and DVDs ( maybe burn two on quality media) will be fine.

Shoot on tape, edit on HDD, record Edit on HDD, record TV on HDD, final copy on Optical media - still waiting for prices to drop under £150 for BD

Agreed, if you have the time for real time digitising.

BTW - I exclude this tape format from my archiving  recommendation:

Finally nothing will work if you employ this operator....

Those 2"in quad machines were great stuff for a long time.  Most surreal experience I had with one was doing interview training as an apprentice at Marconi and someone had lashed-up a b/w vidicon camera (lower quality that most of today's CCTV jobs by far) to a quad machine so that we could review our technique! Talk about sledgehammer to crack a nut! ;D ;D

Ha ha indeed- over 25 years. So long as you kept a bucket and mop handy to unclog the heads!
