Sods law. I received my chip to make my diesel quicker but with having a busy weekend i've not had chance to whip the ECU apart and fit it. Wifey is in work today and its persisting down so I cant remove the gearbox and cats from the breaker so I thought it would be an excellent time to have a go at the ECU. I have removed it, stripped it down and the bloody chip is the one which is soldered in and i'm as good at soldering as Geoff Capes is at ballet :'( :'(

Needs a good iron, not a cheapie, to get lots of heat quickly to the joint, particularly on the 0v pin.

Look through the local yellow pages for electronic engineers, theres quite a few self employed ones in my local "blue book", I'm sure someone would do it for you for the price of a pint.

I would have done it for if you were a bit closer Pete - always the way isn't it?
A word of caution.
Its almost impossible to remove a chip of this size and have the board and chip survive. So, think about it, the board is most important so therefore sacrificing the chip is really the only option.
Firstly, using a pair of very fine/sharp cutters, the tops of the legs of the chip need to be cut off. That will leave 40 (or however many) standalone legs sticking out of the board.
Using the fine iron and sucker the solder is then sucked of each leg in turn. A very small quantity of solder stays with each leg but this is usually easily removed with the extra fine long nose pliers.
I used to do this regularly many many years ago and doubt the practice has changed at all.
You can put a socket in to hold the new chip - but the old one will be beyond redemption.
I'd ask whoever is going to do the job how they would do it. If they say they can extract the old chip then I'd walk away - but thats just IMHO.
If this goes wrong then your ECU is toast!

Its fairly easy to remove this chip complete without damage. Only ever damaged one, and that was attempting it in a field, with a £2.99 iron that wasn't man enough.

and my soldering skills aren't all that, as MDTM will testify when I get some CIDs over to him
(MDTM - I have have to pop up to see Matchless, so will drop all the bits of CID I have to you. Can leave you with a NCDC if you need that to help you play)
