Most if not all digital fuel displays are not to taken as read, they're only a gimmick. Anywhere below half i fill up. Does'nt do 'em any good to run low.
Glad you made it though!! :y

it's not something that you intend to do. you know a certain journey will take x amount of time/distance/fuel, and for what ever reason you think thats ok i'll stop at this or that garage, only to find that you get diverted because the m25/m42/a11 is blocked, then you have to press on to catch up some time and before you know it you're sitting in traffic with a little orangey/yellow light tormenting you. :(

Did you you fill it to the top? I'd be surprised if you got 70 litres in, which means you still had a gallon or so still left in the tank. I know on both the Omega & the crappy Astra that even when the light is flashing & screaming for e to fill it, there's often a good gallon left in the tank. ;)

I have allways tested a new car to see how acurate the gauge is, and the carltons /omegas have been very acurate.

The Elite, will if you go by the gaugr never let me down, I did take it past empty on the fuel computer to -11 miles and gave in.  So am happy to trust it to "0"

downhill easier, at least you can roll it out of the way more readily. though the law of sod means it will 9/10 times be when facing uphill trying to turn into a busy road with cars parked all over. ::)
stupid thing is, it doesn't cost any more to put £30 in the car when it gets to half way, than it does to put £30 in when the light comes on. :-X

but sometimes the light is (still  ::))on after you've been out of the house for over 13 hours (at work) & you can't be 4r$ed to to call for fuel cos you just want to get home.  :y  :y  :y

If you run out of petrol in Spain you can (quite rightly in my opinion) be prosecuted.

A lot of road deaths in Europe, including Great Britain, are caused to "pedestrians" by passing vehicles.

It's pretty low all the time, fuel prices are crippling me in the BMW. Like to drive the merc around as that's good on fuel but the BM is comfier and better for long journeys.

quarter tank or full tank, I'll still have (generally) been out of the house for the same amount of time  ;) (
You get to know just how far you can travel on a tank without running out.  ;)

Strictly speaking it does.

Accelerating and braking the extra kilos costs a bit; possibly more than we 'save' by driving to a petrol station that is 1p/L cheaper?

may be true of an an auto, but in a manual not so sure :-/
1st, 2nd, 5th and just roll along the road at 1100rpm/30 ish and let the weight of the car roll it along. if you need a bit more go you've still got a choice of 3 gears, although 4th at that speed will deal with most inclines. ::) seems to work in a 3.2, perhaps a 2.0/2.2 would need a bit more effort :-/

:-?  :-?  :-? A manual gearbox won't change the laws of physics, you still have inertia to over come no matter whether you're piddling about with 3 pedals or have an auto.  ;)

Better off with a 3.0.  Quicker, and more economical, so I am told  *can of worms opened*  ;D ;D ;D

I personally have an aversion to brimming a tank full of fuel nothing to do with the £80 odd pounds it takes from dry just the fact that every time i do it i seem to have a misfortune.

But if i do borrow her indoors car it always gets a quick splash and dash to stop her running it to low :y
