Airlines normally send an Email telling you to provide this info. The EMail has the link and clicking that takes you to the website to provide the info. The info (API) is I believe used to  look out for bad guys/terrorists etc.

API = Advance paasenger information

Use eticket no. or airline locator normally a mixture of number & letters [i.e. 6GJ7T]. May not be able to reserve seat &
print boading pass untill less than 24 hrs from flight time. varies by airline a class of booking .

I,ve tried them sites but unable to to get to the API part of it.
It might be because the flight is to far in the future,and not near enough to the departure date.

According to this you do it throught the reservations bit.....
http://www.airfrance.com/MU/en/local/resainfovol/achat/apis_re.htm

This for KLM......
We recommend you provide this information to your travel agent at the moment of reservation. Otherwise you are required to supply us with the required information during online check-in.

If checkin in online is not possible, you can also enter the necessary data at a self service check-in machine at the airport.

The API data are sent to the immigration authorities of your destination.

Hope this helps
